I was excited when they announced these where comming out, but I'm really glad I never sent in my money. I'd still love to have 2 of the bigger amps. If I remember correctly it was the 2250. Did like 1000 watts Bridged. At the moment Jack Cali is doing amazing things with the old school Orion amps rebuilding the boards and improving the design and making a much more stable and more reliable board that drops right into the old heat sink.
Oh yes the new Orion stuff is gonna be amazing!
7:48 My first thought is that it may have excessive DC offset in the output stage,causing the high idle current draw. You could check that with a DMM on the speaker terminals.

I love the vintage amps man it takes me back to my younger years I remember lookin through crucifild mags goin through the list of what I was dreaming of buying I remember this phoenix gold amp that was I think 400 watts it was around 250 or 300 and I was like if I put back enough money every week I can get it well big shocker I was making 5.15 and never could save it I was getting paid every 2 weeks that was a life time for me back then you know you had to go hang out at the local Wal-Mart every nite but I did cobble a system togather after a while it was pretty cool the first new speakers I ever bought or had love this shit man

Also I think your old Orion was not so pink back in the day. Anodizing does fade, especially if it has seen light.
If you go back to your early videos you can even see how your amp dyno has faded a bit and is no longer deep black, even though it's inside.
Yes I know the amp was originally red, but the anodizing wasn't as good as the next generation which is still bright red. The digital reference and later models keep their brilliance still to this day

If it has a high idle current check to see if there is any DC on the output. Also thanks for showing those transistors!
I bought 3, sold one and still have two. A blue 2150 and a black 2100. I had to send one into tips for repair for gain pot. I’ve never powered the black 2100. I will say this in regard to these amps, they are Sq and sound good.

I’m not but I’m so thankful I got my amps and I feel it’s because my wife was relentless in following up on them and perhaps Marcus showed me some love by having the same last uncommon name
I'd be interested in a technical deep dive on what is different in this design compared to a typical class A/B amp. Seems they nailed many aspects of the quality while missing some notable ones.
The amp using about 40 watts of power while doing nothing when hooked up to a 2 ohm load is strange. In my limited experience with amps the only time I've seen something like that is when the amp is unstable and oscillating which can cause excessive power draw at idle. Maybe they had issues with that in the design or component choice which contributed to production and quality issues. Just speculating of course.

I like that too, those are tough tests... Hard loads to get with actual speakers so it really tests the amp.

yeah Ray has fixed dozens and many who have posted and replied to my Facebook post have said they haven't powered up their amp(s) yet. Oh boy, not sure how many were actually working out of the box, but likely not many

damn the Orion "Red Bricks", i always wanted one, ended up buying RF Punch 150. A huge come up from Custic 380's from Circuit City, i think i had a 190 also, Cerwin Vega LD12's i beleive?? dont quote me on th epart numbers lol its been a while....cool channel man. Subbed
At the time the punch 150 was made bernie was building orion 280 gx amp. That was wonderful time in my life working at rockford and building amps and repairing them.

But I love those plugs. Remember, amps are made to be installed once (maybe twice) and left alone (set and forget). Plus you want good continuity Bryan the plug and posts. You don't want it getting hot.
Nooooo! There are so many better types of speaker and power terminals today and the WECO plugs are no good!
Not to be negative in any way big D I enjoy all of the hard work in your testing but as a auto tech 12 volts is considered a dead battery and 12.6 is considered fully charged anything below 12.6 probably won't give you optimal performance... just a little side note👍
My car days did the Orion and I up to the famous Phoenix Gold MS2125. Look for an Adcom car Amp I had one, was not very powerful, rated at 30 watts and I got it down to .5 ohm stable.
Great sleeper and all in one amp. I ran one JL 10 W6DVC and a set of Ephonics Separates The adcom was awesome. Not very loud but sounded fantastic

Orion !!!! Had that 225 HCCA on for svc pyramid 12 super blues I think then stepped up with an entry level Orion with a skull on it for highs it sounded off.
Looks cool. I really want to like it, but man between the backstory the quality control issues and lack of performance, it'd be a real hard sell

I hate to be that guy, but an amp that came brand new never used and didn't even work doesn't seem at all like a quality amp.... Even if it's beast when fixed I can't give them the credit at all.... Whoever fixed it gets the credit.....

they probably used the yellow RCA's because they got them in bulk for cheaper than the red and whites. Probably the same with the power/speaker connectors, got them in bulk for cheap. Had to cut corners somewhere.

Midrange sound dead like its half on. im glad i never got caught up in the fancy amps knda like a store selling something that looks cool but is made with half expectations.
Clasical bipolar transistors to out section , 2 n 64 91 or 2 n 6488 , verry old shool clas AB amp , but interesing my why this amp consupt to no signal to muth power ?? OFFSET BAD OR ???? bad construction dc stage ??? ,. Inverter ?? ,. Hmmmm ,.
Yeeah that thing has DC on the speaker output. The idle current varying with the dyno load i because the power transistors of the amplifier circuit are not adjusted symmetrically. Don't connect speakers you care about to that shiny turd.
Those connectors are hateful, awful things.
The changing current draw with load means there is significant DC offset in this trash design. Unbelievable.
Perfect example of good parts and bad execution.

a buck a watt wasn't uncommon. And $5 a watt for the really high end stuff was pretty much expected.
Got two of these and 4 2100s, haven't ever unboxed any of em, afraid they're fucked out of the box based on others reports
