  • The Earthquake Lake Visitor Center which is located 27 miles northwest of West Yellowstone, Montana on US Highway 287. Quake Lake, also known as Earthquake Lake, is a natural wonder that formed in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake in 1959. The earthquake, which measured 7.5 on the Richter scale, caused a massive landslide that dammed the Madison River and created Quake Lake.
In 1967, the Forest Service's Earthquake Lake Visitor Center opened its doors for the first season of operation. Today, the center provides interpretive services for more than 50,000 visitors annually. The natural attractions and the easily-seen effects of the strongest earthquake in the Rocky Mountains has made this area one of the outstanding scenic and geological study areas in the west.

Great visitor center with unexpectedly good interpretive exhibits. So glad I happened upon this place on my way through Yellowstone.

We visited here in September, 2022. A fascinating place, but sad at the same time due to the thought of those who died in the slide, and are still buried there underneath. The amount of earth that slid to the other side of the river and up the other side is incredible to look at. The visitors' center is great, very interesting exhibits and the short video. The rangers are helpful and a wealth of knowledge. I highly recommend a visit here, as well as Ghost Village which is nearby.

For those of you who havent been, I encourage you to do so. They have a 20 min video you can watch in the little theatre. Theres are dvds and books about this event. The saddest story is about the parents whos tent was crushed by boulder, while their 3 children were a few feet away. And also, the two girls who had to find gelp, so they took a can of flour and....well, just watch the dvd. We come by here every year to see the " ghost trees' in the water that rema8n from that quake. Ghost village is neat too.
