    I'm with Allison that sometimes you want to be progressive and so it feels weird to be so traditional/patriarchal by having your partner pay for things, especially when it's as expensive as an engagement ring. BUT I think the red flag is that Allison knew she wanted her partner to WANT to buy her a beautiful engagement ring that would work for her sensory issues and she didn't feel comfortable being honest with him about that. And if you can't be honest to your partner about something as fun an engagement ring, then you're probably not in the right place. But hearing Allison is now in another relationship with a wonderful person is making my WHOLE YEAR!!! We love to see good things happen to good people

    • @mydogeatspuke
      @mydogeatspuke 2 года назад +22

      Maybe she didn't feel like she could be honest because he had already allowed her to design the entire thing herself so that it did meet all of her needs, but she didn't know herself well enough to realise the band would be an issue for her and let him pay for a custom piece of jewelry without properly considering the needs he was already allowing her to have considered before even making the purchase. It's called guilt, and it's not his fault. You are correct however that her inability to effectively communicate is a red flag, and I'm really not surprised that he "abruptly" called off the engagement following several mind games in quick succession.

      @@Devilangel250others commented on it and said there is (or was? could have since been deleted in an attempt to rewrite history) a video they made as a couple showing the design process and that she had total control over the specification, including the width of the band, and he just paid for it when she was finished making it exactly how she wanted it to be. He definitely did not just pick a random ring without considering her needs, in fact the exact opposite appears to be the case. Isn't it interesting though that she's managed to make so many people believe something that isn't at all true?

    I actually just learned about this in law school! Legally whoever bought the ring is entitled to it in a broken engagement regardless of fault (aka who breaks it off). But since you did pay for part of it you would be entitled to that value. So you’re actually right in thinking that the elliptical could be a substitute for your cost of the ring (and you actually probably got more than the $250, so you basically won ❤️).

    • @KathleenPayton
      @KathleenPayton 2 года назад +21

      In California, the law is different depending on fault. If the engagement ring recipient calls off the engagement, they have to return the ring to the giver. If the end of the engagement is a mutual decision, the recipient also has to return to the giver. But if the giver calls off the engagement, the recipient can keep the ring because they weren’t the one who breeched the contract.

    Ugh the Ring was the BIGGEST pain in my failed engagement. First of all, my ex never wanted to be engaged until she found a ring with a diamond that was literally 2/3 my annual salary at the time, and she made it SUPER clear that that was HER one and only ring. And then when I was struggling to make ends meet financially she suddenly resented the ring and kept threatening to "take it back" so I could rebuild my savings. All the while flaunting it to anyone that would pay attention. Then when she abruptly left me 2 weeks before the wedding, and kicked me out she gave me back the ring and told me she could never look at it again even though I didn't want it either. She gave it to me along with our wedding rings and I eventually ended up selling them back to the jewelers who custom made all the bands and such, and used the money to get myself a place to live and furnishings, since I had been forced to get rid of all of my own independent things, because they looked "too chincy for a doctor's house"... Yeah lesson learned... never get engaged to someone who only wanted to get engaged for a status symbol ring

    Truly hilarious comments from people very angry at the idea of engagement rings and feminism in the studio today. I'm a feminist. I think engagement rings are more of a thing to discuss now than an absolute given. But i still think they're very valid, and I will tell you why.
    Marriage still overwhelmingly benefits men. Women still do most of the domestic labor. Women still do most of the child rearing. Women do this while still participating in the work force, making less money and getting pigeon holed into gig work more often than men. Married men live longer than unmarried men and are more likely to remarry after being widowed. Married women live shorter lives and are less likely to remarry if they're widowed, because marriage is work for women. Being married benefits men's social status. I could go on. An engagement ring is basically a small down payment for all the ways a wife will still statistically make a man's life much, much easier. Women could just ... not get married and have kids, and if it takes a shiny ring to sweeten the deal, so be it. There's a reason women are having fewer/no children and waiting longer to get married--i think a lot of women are realizing marriage is a raw deal in many scenarios, engagement ring or no.
    Personally, if i ever get married, I would like a reasonably priced engagement ring and would buy my future husband something in return, like a watch or ring. However, that equal exchange will come with the expectation of equal partnership: we both do chores, we both earn money, we both make each others lives easier, we won't be having kids because i refuse to be stuck with them.

      When I told my friends and family in high school that I wouldn't be getting married, I remember what a nightmare they made my life by constantly arguing with me and trying to convince me that marriage was something you couldn't knock till you tried it - which is rather irresponsible and like telling me that I should dump my partner and kids the day I feel like it isn't going to work out. I saw firsthand how my mom suffered to raise us (and that was even while my dad was a great guy and very loving and supportive) and I knew I didn't want that for my future. It's true, women still do most of the housework and I'm guessing that if we don't consciously acknowledge that and adamantly demand that equal split then statistics will continue to show that we do the brunt of the housework while also maintaining a job for the next several decades. It's been some years now and I don't talk to those friends anymore and I try to avoid most of my extended family. But in my head I know they'll get married and in a couple of years when they have kids, wonder why they got into this in the first place. I'm already seeing it happen with some of my cousins. I hope for them and for women everywhere, that isn't the case. I hope things change for the better.

      I still would like an engagement ring but I don't care if it's on the cheaper side (I'd prefer that) and I don't care of its diamond. Few of the big reasons I want to get married is I want my partner to make the medical decisions (like if I'm in a coma/life support situation rather than my family). And if I died it's more clear that all my assets will be his. But I already know I want to be with him the rest of my life 😁 and we'll probably buy a house before we get married

    • @julzgulz1992

      Haha I'm married. I didn't marry until 38 years old. All my friends are married. Honestly, almost none of what you said is true, at least based on the marriages that I know. My husband does so much for me: emotionally, chores wise, physically, financially, life decisions, support... I could go on. Marriage is ALWAYS what you make it. If you marry a selfish little boy who doesn't care about anything but himself ... That's what your marriage will be. Equality never exists perfectly between two individuals. But balance and harmony with a good partner can exist, and will enrich your life in ways you can never imagine. I might do all the cooking in our house, but my husband takes care of all the trash and washing the bedding. He can't clean a toilet but he always hears out my work frustrations and gives great advice. He knows me in ways I don't know myself. My advice to young woman is to learn how to make a relationship work and identify a good partner who balances you. It is hard work, it's not always perfectly fair or idealized, but the work is so worth the relationship. It settles you, it smooths out your hard edges, it keeps I from making costly mistakes, it opens up your world. It's worlds above my single years of self involved loneliness.

    Part of the point of marriage, is to make it harder to just break up over small things. All marriages that last have extremely difficult moments. I spoke to a woman who was married for 55 years, I asked her how she did it, she said “just keep breathing.” Like literally just keep being alive with that person. That requires a lot of self control and commitment even when you want to give up, get bored, have fights, or are tempted by someone new.

      I work at a bank too, and honestly when people are in the midst of a break up one person will often empty the account, add security holds etc just to annoy the joint user. If you’re both joint they can legally empty the account without telling you. Not a good idea IMO and I’ve been married for 3 years.
