Ostroh. The return of the first Eastern Europe Academy · Ukraїner

Ostroh Academy is one of the first successful examples of educational revival in Ukraine without any attempts to save the old soviet system, but to lean on long-standing traditions of Ukrainian education. The academy in Ostroh had been existing since 1576, but it fell into decay after the death of duke and his sons in 1636th. After Ukraine gaining independence, the renewal and positioning change of Ostroh have started. During soviet times Ostroh was known for mental hospital as a marker of soviet rule, since such institutions were the places for “discordant” academicians and intellectuals.
