Jon Girolami Yes, the term might not be that old, maybe the late 70s early 80s, but yes it is a dust cover. Just like the trigger guard has it’s own name, and it’s not removable, not just the frame. You can use that if you’d like since it does house the spring.

Dust cover? Never heard of one on a 1911. What you call the back of the frame is the hammer spring housing.
