I got this to work and then had issues with it when I did it a second time a few months later. For those that are having problems, be sure that your printer is awake and not in sleep mode. I got mine to work fine after I made sure it was awake. I would suggest printing a test page or something. Then run through the steps again. Resetting the toner cartridge's works great. I've printed 1069 pages with the original toner cartridges and still going strong after one reset. Steps: 1. Open cover 2. Press and hold both Secure and Cancel buttons (Screen will then show each type of cartridge) 3. Use plus and minus buttons to select which cartridge you want to reset, then hit OK button. 4. Then push the Up/+ button to accept 5. Close cover On a side note, if you are an IOS user, I would recommend the latest firmware update. It fixes the Airprint issue that came out with IOS7. As of this post (July 2014), the current firmware is 1.19. Login into the web interface of your printer via it's ip address, on the General tab, under Maintenance Info, you can see what firmware you are currently running. This can also be seen in the printers menu screen. Download the firmware app to your computer from Brother's support site for your printer, then follow the software's directions.
for anyone wondering about the rest of the colors, just repeat the process this video shows to reset for every black and colour setting. Apart from the single Black setting this video shows you how to reset, there are another 10 settings you need to reset, if you want to do your whole cartridge. You can reset them one after the other in the menu, THEN close the cover and the printer will reset all your levels :)
Not a perfect video (poor sound), but I listened carefully and managed to reset my toner cartridges. Thanks for sharing. It has already saved me lots of money.
If you can't follow, here it is in text:- Turn the printer on. 1. Pop the lid, 2. Press Secure and XCancell buttons simultaneously. (Displays "UP/DOWN/OK") 3. For the first cartridge, "Blk STD" press OK (Displays "RESET/EXIT") 4. Press UP-ARROW (displays "ACCEPTED") 5. Shut the lid and wait for it to go through its stuff until it settles on "READY" For the other 10 cartridges:- 1. Pop the lid, 2. Press Secure and XCancell buttons simultaneously. (Displays UP/DOWN/OK" 3. Press "DOWN ARROW" and select the next cartridge. 4. Press "OK" (displays "Reset / EXIT") 4. Press "UP-ARROW" (displays "ACCEPTED") 5. Shut the lid and wait for it to go through its stuff until it settles on "READY" First cartridge is Blk STD Second is BLK STR Next is "C" TNR STD then "C" TNR HC then "C" TNR STR then the same for "M" (3 cartridges) then same for "Y" (3 cartridges)
Remember to cancel all printing jobs before doing this, otherwise it won't work. For instance if you're in the middle of printing something and the printer stops because of low ink, you'll have to cancel the printing job, and only then open the cover etc.
Thank you so much for saying this. I was getting frustrated that it was not working. I cleared the queue, power cycled the printer and boom! This now works! Thanks!!
Thank you so much! It took some finding because the reset wasn't listed as 3170 on the other website, but it worked like a charm. Thanks for saving me the money.
Thanks very much, it worked and I put the new cartridges I bought back into the sleeves and put the starter ones back in. Only used 514 pages from starter cartridges after 1 month and then ALL of the toner (color and black) was empty at the same time, which was suspicious. Will not buy BROTHER again...
You rock man! I was ready to throw this printer out the window for not accepting a new cyan cartridge. You helped me fix it in 30 seconds... After wasting 40 minutes trying to figure it out myself
Worked perfectly. You might as well mute the vid..just follow the text at the bottom of the screen. Lift up, Hold Cancel+Secure, Go through each color tonor and reset, and boom. Done.
Yay, it worked! :) Thank you! I printed the info and reset the ones that showed empty. Printed the info again, and all 4 cartridges are reset. I have the HL-31C
Wow! I found your video when I was searching toner prices because the printer was telling me the black was low. I followed your instructions & it seems that it worked. I'll be curious to see how much it extended the ability to print with the currently installed cartridges. Thank you.
Thanks so much, just ridiculous that they force you to change cartridge when a good amount of toner left. Better toner monitor system needed.. not to mention corporate greed.
This brilliant. By chance I kept a box full of "used" cartridges that I am still going through for a second time, six months later. I would estimate they were still 50% full of toner. Shame on Brother for such a wasteful practice.
It is important that you press the cancel and secure button when the COVER IS OPEN. The reset menu won't appear if you have already closed the lid. Good luck.
This worked on my HL 5470DW to reset the toner 1- Power ON, 2- OPEN Door (keep it open) 3- Press/hold XCancel then immediately Secure, together briefly & release 4- you should see [BK.TONER ..] on LCD 5- use UP arrow to scroll to your cartridge type if not already shown, 6- press OK button to select the cart. type 7- you should see [UP RESET..] so press UP to select Reset 8- CLOSE the Door Now you should eventually see [Wait.. ]. Back to printing....
Would love to know what to do from this video. It appears to be well thought out, the audio is barely audible. Cannot make out more than half of what was said. Could you enter written strips over your video? I really want to know how to do this. Recently got this printer, and it is already telling me I need a new cartridge, blinking, and now not functioning. Very little low-toner printing got done. I'd heard this manuf was the best for cartridges that last longer than competitors.
A hint is to watch the screens showing what he is doing. I know what you mean about the sound, but it would be hard to do this without the printer running and these printers are loud. I bought a set of cartridges 3 months ago when it told me I was low on black. Now I have had to reset the colors but haven't had to changed them yet, and the print is still the same.
I have a HL-3170CDW and I need help in how to turn off the deep sleep I followed the instructions from other printer models it jus doesn’t work for this one.
So In short: - Open lid - Press Secure and xCancel - Choose the colour with the down or up arrow (for instance BK.TNR STR) I chose BK.TNR STD, but it worked anyway - Choose Reset and press OK
Started receiving low toner messages on a starter black toner cartridge at 731 pages. The printer only accepted the cartridge reset when I kept the top open. Please note it was also easier to access the reset menu when the top was open. If it was shut it was hit or miss to access the reset menu AND did NOT accept the reset (Brother HL-3170CDW, Main ROM version: 1.19)
Is there a way to take the safety off, deep sleep mode, when it goes on deep sleep, it fails to print..I have to hit button, to reset when I'm on my laptop...any trick?..
I appear to have the only 3170CDW that wont offer anything other than BLK. STD to reset. Done that but my computer still tells me the Cyan cartridge is empty! I've tried pressing other button combinations in case Brother got crafty. Nope. Tried cancelling printing first. Nope. Tries turning "Product" off. nope. Tried unplugging product. Nope. I deleted the print queue between each attempt but still got "error printing" and a message that Cyan was empty. Oh, I succumbed to temptation a day or two ago to update the firmware. I wonder if Brother have removed the ability to reset colours? Its most unlike me to update firmware. My motto is "If it aint broke dont fix it", but I thought that updating firmware might resolve the oh-so-annoying- sleep or deep sleep feature. It didn't, by the way. If anyone has a solution, please share. I'd love to join the ranks of all those below who are overjoyed that it worked for them!
OK. Hours later, here's the simple problem I haven't seen anyone else mention: You CANNOT select cartridges on-screen if they are unmodified originals! By that I mean the stingy ones with less toner in that came with the printer. For these you do need the reset wheel that someone else has mentioned below. Replacement cartridges have the reset wheel.
Here is a video where the reset wheel is fully explained. They also sell non-Brother toner and a starter kit that includes a reset wheel. ruclips.net/video/ccS-yGhM2a8/видео.html
You certainly make it hard to hear the instructions. Can't this be placed on the video after the video is shot? i finally doped it out, but it was very hard on my ears. In any case thanks
Toner are so expensive. Tomorrow I will be doing a drop test from a 10 story building. You might be ask is that even necessary. No. Does this one bit help the printer. No. But will I get a life time of satisfaction of seeing my broken printer and not to mention all the broken pieces on the floor. Heck Ya

Thank you so much for your post: i could not understand the video because the sound is so bad. Thanks!
Thank you brother! Saved me $85 today since I knew there was plenty of toner in there! I really appreciate it! :-)

Thank you! I have been using this tutorial at the last 3 years every-time the toner is about to finish. Great and easy! Thanks.
Me too only guy I know on RUclips that does my model.. LoL..I have been using yes video about the same amount of time as well.. 😅
Not a perfect video (poor sound), but I listened carefully and managed to reset my toner cartridges. Thanks for sharing. It has already saved me lots of money.
This worked for the HL-4570CDW as well! New cartridge wasn't being recognized, but this trick worked perfectly!
Always come back after all these years.. Thanks again
Works perfectly. Easy to follow instructions. Worked with the starter cartridges as well. Great money saving tip. Thanks
If you can't follow, here it is in text:-
Turn the printer on.

First cartridge is Blk STD
Second is BLK STR
Next is "C" TNR STD
then "C" TNR HC
then "C" TNR STR
then the same for "M" (3 cartridges)
then same for "Y" (3 cartridges)
Thanks a lot for clearing this up, I thought it didn't work, but it does on the HL-3140CW
THANK YOU!

dude this rocked - fixed my problem right before needing to print a massive D&D character sheet session
thanks

It worked PERFECTLY (even though the audio wasn't great) THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FROM ITALY MAN!!!! PS... 6 people watched this vid are Brother worker!
Thanks it worked like a charm, had no idea I could do this.. I thought when it said replace it meant empty and here I was throwing away $$$
Thank you so much :) , works perfectly on HL-3140CW too :)
Thanks so much, just ridiculous that they force you to change cartridge when a good amount of toner left. Better toner monitor system needed.. not to mention corporate greed.
Thank you! Worked perfectly. Audio is not good but you can just rewind, pause and replay. Easy.
I wonder if the HL-3180 will have a workaround like this? I had to do a similar thing on my Brother 4170.
wow... so mad i didnt know about this earlier! SO MUCH WASTED MONEY! Thank you very much!
worked for my Brother_HL_3142CW_series. great. THANK YOU!
This is great, Really worth it. Saved a lot of money, thanks.
Does this work on the starter cartridge that came with the printer?
thank you viet tech! cam on nhieu viet tech!
Great Hint! - Printer works now - and the qualitiy is really good. No empty Toner!, not now!
You are genius you made it so easy to do, works perfect save me a lot fo money. thank u thank u thank u .
Can this be done with starter toner cartridges? Or will a reset wheel be required to be fitted into the cartridge manually?
+tanboonhwee8008 - I just reset a starter cartridge.
+ZenaBaywell thanks for the heads up. mine is up and running as well
This brilliant. By chance I kept a box full of "used" cartridges that I am still going through for a second time, six months later. I would estimate they were still 50% full of toner. Shame on Brother for such a wasteful practice.
It worked with Brother HL-3150. Thanks a lot
It is important that you press the cancel and secure button when the COVER IS OPEN. The reset menu won't appear if you have already closed the lid. Good luck.
awesome- took a couple tries to get the last part of it right but it worked- dont' need to hear him- just follow the what the fingers do :)
This worked on my HL 5470DW to reset the toner
1- Power ON, 2- OPEN Door (keep it open)
3- Press/hold XCancel then immediately Secure, together briefly & release
4- you should see [BK.TONER ..] on LCD
5- use UP arrow to scroll to your cartridge type if not already shown,
6- press OK button to select the cart. type
7- you should see [UP RESET..] so press UP to select Reset
8- CLOSE the Door
Now you should eventually see [Wait.. ]. Back to printing....
The sound of the printer makes it hard to hear your voice. Thanks for the info! Very helpfull!
I have the same question as Dresden below. My computer was showing that the printer was offline when it was in a sleep mode.
Would love to know what to do from this video. It appears to be well thought out, the audio is barely audible. Cannot make out more than half of what was said. Thank you very much :) :) :). Works perfectly on HL-3140CW.
You're welcome!

I have a HL-3170CDW and I need help in how to turn off the deep sleep I followed the instructions from other printer models it jus doesn’t work for this one.
Worked perfectly - thank you so much!
Pressing the 2 buttons didn't bring up the menu. Has this changed?
Very helpful! Thank you for posting this video.
How can I reset the toner from a DCP 9020 CDW printer?
On a Hl-3140cw it's the same except you press "back" and "Cancel" to get to the deep sleep yes or no menu instead of "back" and "down".
Worked for my printer (HL-3170CDW) before, but now when I open cover. hold cancel/security it does not go into the reset menu. Any idea why?
Mine didn't at first. You have to hold both buttons and then select using the go button.
Thanks a lot for instructions, very helpful
So In short:
- Open lid
- Press Secure and xCancel
- Choose the colour with the down or up arrow (for instance BK.TNR STR) I chose BK.TNR STD, but it worked anyway
- Choose Reset and press OK
hi can you make a video refill toner cartrige for 3170 cdw please 😄
Great! Thanks so much. Worked perfectly.
Works perfectly, thanks!
Started receiving low toner messages on a starter black toner cartridge at 731 pages. The printer only accepted the cartridge reset when I kept the top open. what does STD and STR stand for?
oh, STR means RESET? and STD means decrease from 100%?
Worked so well , thank you soooooooo Much !
You're welcome!
Is there a way to take the safety off, deep sleep mode, when it goes on deep sleep, it fails to print..I have to hit button, to reset when I'm on my laptop...any trick?..

No ,my bad - it did work, must not have been pressing it properly! Thanks for the tip
Many thank you Daniel son.
why is my 2 sided printing shifted, nothing lines up!!
Didn't work at all. Cylcled through everything, closed the printer, still says "No Toner" tried it many times. "Reset" etc but still won't print.

muy bueno. me encanta
horrific audio -- can't hear voice at all.
Audio is almost inaudible, but otherwise good advise. Thanks.
very helpful!! thanks
thanks my friend
