As a tank enthusiast and a person who also thinks that Abrams battle scene doesnt make sense, what makes the least sense to me in this series is the fact that humans didn't think of using Exoframes for military applications for a whole freaking year. Dude, it's free technology. Everybody's going to give it a try. Especially major world militaries.
They were probably already researching it but they haven't released a prototype in public yet. Our Mc is a common soldier and even he knows how good it would be.
@@miming3679 I mean it's not that great if you have to be exposed while using it. The MOMENT they climbed out of the water the ambushers should have all been dead from HE or Cannister shells and massed machine gun fire from the coaxial guns and the mounted M2s and 240s.
I'm genuinely impressed to see that they actually animated the M2's barrel recoiling like it actually does IRL. I'm also impressed that a platoon of Abrams in reverse with the crews firing their M2s and M240s couldn't defend themselves from the mechs, and that the gunners kept firing the main gun instead of switching to the coaxial, or, hell, firing some high-explosive against exposed targets. Great work on the intricate details, annoying failings due to contrieved plot reasons.
There's a lot of detail in this series that sells its "realistic war aproach". Also it seemed the Abrams were ambushed from all sides from a considerable force of highly mobile mechanized infantry who had enough explosives to take out tanks. Those points and the fact that this seems to be the 1st battle of modern developed forces vs cheap and efficient mechs, the ambushers have most of the advantages as they probably already know how tanks fight, as compared to the Americans who are fighting these for the 1st time. I will agree we should've seen more ambushers casualties (though we do see them, just more would've been nice). This was more or less an example of when warfare started to change. Like that moment in ww1 where they found out the hard way that traditional calvary charges were not gonna cut it in modern war.

Hey man, I totally hear you, I’d like to say though that it’s not unheard of for tanks to move to support positions on their own or with less company. Also, I agree with the commander sending LAV’s into the water being pretty dumb, the scene mostly works because of that support failure (/idiot order that could happen). When I think of this whole scene happening in the scope of say five minutes some of it may be a stretch but I don’t think all of it is if you can accept a stupid order as a realistic possibility (one that hopefully wouldn’t happen) and also then consider the armored units moving autonomously. Going back a moment, it’s not unheard of to have tanks move/cut through wide swaths of land to get places, in terms of Angola and Cabinda and the lay out it’s not as unrealistic a notion as you may think, particularly with few obstacles exempting that river. I don’t know what accompanying support/engineering size/amounts of units would be for the undetermined number of tanks but your certainly right they ideally/likely wouldn’t have been as passive/absent as they were. The only greatly unrealistic thing in and of itself in this whole scene to me is the idea (assuming this hasn’t been solved) that any vehicle would tread anywhere in Angola/Cabinda at all off road, the place is laid with an incredible amount of landmines, so much so it’s decimated wildlife populations and is nearly incalculable in density and spread (alternatively, if we assume the mine problem has been addressed this point becomes moot but if not, it’s hella risky depending on who mined it and when, this includes a high amount soviet anti-tank mines that have a special heat [and I believe lead mechanism] that has a high kill ratio against current armor. However if this mining situation wasn’t solved this tank scene would be totally explained by a. An overconfidence send the armor attitude “we’re fucking indestructible” and b. No way Jose you have a lot of support). Now we can go back and forth on this hypothetical but that’s moot because the whole things from a pretty creative anime but I wanted to take a moment and say, it’s a stretch but I don’t believe it’s that much of a stretch. It also makes sense that the Angolans would retrofit their available anti tank mines. Overall though I appreciate your comment I think it’s hella informative, I’m here mostly adding to the discussion, please feel free reply and I hope that my reply adds some more interesting variables to the discussion. Unfortunately much of this info was only implicitly covered in the anime, kudos to the directors for doing their research. I would very much enjoy knowing how you feel this affects the combat feasibility of the scene. Btw, I’m on my phone too so bear with me.

ikr? I can see them work in this shown like ambush style attack but against a prepared tank column that is prepared for combat and knows what to expect, no chance. The exoskelleton drivers arent even armored, they are just free on the back of it.
One thing I find interesting is the idea on how useful mechs would be on the battlefield. In a lot of ways they're just suped up infantry. The biggest force multipliers out there are communications and situational awareness tech, Mechs don't really impact those. Don't get me wrong mechs would be a force multiplier for sure, but I don't see them significantly changing the way battles are fought.
@@LMGunslinger agreed, even the armored ones shown latter on are taken down by .50 cals and only seem to carry slightly heavier weapons (in terms of anti tank firepower). essentially they would function like Humvees do in the US military. other than that though. How ironic I stumble across this and happened to be on M1a1s for four years in the Marines, Second Tank Battalion. Yeah no, this ain't even close to how we would've handled this engagement.
@@flapjack6495 There's alot to unpack so I'll try to keep it short and sweet. 1) The Lav-25 is a recon vehicle. While it can fight with the 25mm Bushmaster, that's not it's job. It's job is to scout and relay information to other assets. It never would have left its position to engage the mechs. If it absolutely had to fight it could do it from a reasonable range with the optics it has. They wouldn't have jumped into the water. They would've seen the bridge get blown up and seen the mechs climbing on it. No self respecting commander would order his vehicle into the water. Instead, they would have sent information up to other assets like fast air or rotors. Trust me, we never have support far behind. Infantry would actually have been on those bridge laying boats. They'd be contributing to the fight as well. 2) The tanks. When it comes to being able to actually engage targets, we can do it at far ranges day and night. The FCS on the Abrams would easily be able to lead and engage the mechs. In the open and with a whole damn platoon? There'd be so much goddamn coax and anti personnel fire. Would you want to charge tanks in the open with nothing but swim trunks on an open top mech? Those mechs were not moving fast enough. As for the times they hopped on tanks. Other tanks would've done a manuever we call "Scratching your wingman's back." That means another tank would swing its gun onto you and use coax to sweep infantry off. I'm doing this on phone so it's a little difficult, but that's about the jist of it. The engagement made the Abrams look like an armored storm trooper. If there's a platoon of tanks somewhere you can be damned sure they're looking for a fight. Nobody would be taking those mechs for granted.
@@shirghazaycowboys wow thanks for that info! I I get that it's an anime so theres always suspension of disbelief but it seemed almost comical also isn't the Abrams hard to destroy? Would it make more sense for the mechsto try to get underneath them and detonate?
@@flapjack6495 The Abrams is a tough SOB, but it has weaknesses the same as any normal contemporary NATO tank. The side armor is alright, but it's not as good as the front. What makes it potent is the FCS and ergonomics. That is, crew survivability and other nuances that make operating it relatively easy with good training. Honestly, this was a poor argument for why the mechs were good. On flat open terrain this engagement should've gone to the tanks. Yeah they may have lost whatever was on the bridge, but once everyone was rallied and aware of what was going on? No, those mechs would be fucked. The moment the net opened up with "We re being attacked! They're using the bipedal walkers on us!" Every supporting asset would be barreling down on that position. If the engagement had been in a dense city or somewhere really built up? Okay fine. This scene was just mech wank, plain and simple. There have been plenty of well written pieces on why mechs aren't the end all be all and why tanks will always have a place on the battlefield.
@@shirghazaycowboys mind recommending some of those written pieces ? And a urban setting makes more sense like those neighborhoods in Brazil I would love to see some well thought-out fight scenes with a mech vs a tank but whatever thanks for the insight !
If you saw an abrahams in close grouping like that, even if u're in a speedy exosuit. You better be sure you have god tier movement speed. Canister shells are not a joke. They're made for a reason.
While the specific tactics are wrong (I'm just an enthusiast, and even I recognized how odd it was that the Marines didn't bring any infantry, perhaps the single most effective weapon against a pilot in an exposed frame like that), I like the general gist. The EXOFRAME isn't really a better weapon, it's a cheaper one. It can project more power, with less training, for almost no money. That would change the face of war, very quickly.
Also the idea of a Marine, of all people, complaining that their equipment is too good is fucking hysterical. My brother's weapon platoon in ~2011 was rolling around in AAVs that were made in the 1960s.
@@NautilusSSN571 It is something recent (But i do now know if they actually did it, i only just heard about them wanting to retire the tanks), the episode takes place in 2015 when such a thing was not even being thought about.
Rather questionable metrics if this qualifies as a "Very good story". As far as I can tell, from what I've seen, this show has nothing but setup. You get a black ops mission at the first episode then it's a bunch of prequels and world building for the rest. What does the series wanna do with it? Fuck if I know. The show just walked away after that. I imagine the show didn't have the budget to make a payoff because this thing spends a lot of its animation on firefights. Animating those atop of the detail being consistent costs a lot of cash. Most likely this is just to test the waters and YT cheaped out.
The amount of care that went into the military realism kind of makes the weird inaccuracies more stark. None of the unprotected charging mechs should have survived the ammount of firepower that several Abrams platoons can bring to bear. This goes especially because they were able to gather in a defensive line. The only reason the mechs weren't cut down immediately is because of the stormtrooper level accuracy displayed by the crews.
this is actually genius on the alien part, i believe why they're willing to trade the suit for something so abundant and near worthless like limestone to human is because the suit must be a cheap exosuit not intended for combat, but more like a wheelchair to aid the disabled. yet to us human it is something so revolutionary and versatile, a mechanical robot that can be piloted with same grace of that of human body yet with possibly ten or hundred time normal human strength. with that in mind military application is inevitable and smaller nation with no nuke will tear each other apart first with these new machine and then larger superpower will follow. thus, when humanity is weakened through war, the alien will descend from their ship with the REAL military grade exosuit that will outclass everything the human have... in the end we will be the sucker of our own nature
Yea, i wrote that before in a comment. Romans called that "Divide Et Impera". And the brits practiced this quite a lot in history, well not exactly like shown here, but close.
Nah. I can see it as an experiment from the aliens. Like what would the humans do if they had such technology. Kinda similar how we do studies on other organisms
the funniest thing is that in TVtropes they put the trope: "Reality is Unrealistic" as a measure that this could happened based on reality lmao, despite there's no basis of reality whatsoever in this scene
“How did the bots win?” “Well, even though they were highly exposed, both the bots and the pilots, somehow we kept missing all our shots! And also we were out of grenades, high explosive and any sort of easily expandable ammo to riddle the whole battlefield with bullets. Also it seems the bots are magic since with such small frames they have power to last, capabilities to carry multiple passengers, strength, speed, maneuverability, perfect balance for bipedal constructs and decent armor. All in all, if this were fiction, people would be saying we lost due to plot necessities”. Unless you say the “sci-fi” of a story also has fantasy (magic, etc…) elements, everything is bound by the same laws of physics we are.
Lol yup thought the same thing. Not to mention tanks are somewhat sparse these days. You rarely hear about any Abram tanks in the Middle East. It’s all air strikes and drone strikes. Real scenario would be 2 f22s or f35s going Mach 2 over the battlefield milliseconds before they level it with missiles. Or drone strikes which put no US lives in danger. Or or intercontinental missile strikes.
I agree with everything but the capabilities of the machine point. I think it’s entirely possible that there some super material and possibly future more efficient concepts being used with said materials. I mean we have plenty of almost super materials with amazing properties that the limiting factor is ability to produce and put to use. I think Graphene is one of them, a lot of potential just not with in our reach. Space faring and trading aliens got a pretty good R&D head start on us tbh
10:32 The animation focuses a lot on detail and realism, which is why the Marine floating face down in the water despite wearing full body armor kind of stands out

So I show to my friend. we both love the story so far, but the choppy animation of people vs the smooth CGI of the machines was disappointing. We hope it gets better in season 2.
It makes sense because of the fact the suits are supposed to augment your physical abilities so from an animation stand point lowering the frame rate of people makes the mechs seem more capable kinda like how into the spider verse lowers miles frame rate when they run from the lab until peter shows him how to web swing and the animation framrate for miles starts to mach that of peters

The tanks and guns are all so well-detailed. But the way the mechs win is questionable, the users of the mechs are exposed as hell but somehow didn't get shot, and they used RPGs to take out the Abrams?
I love how these Marines are all the worst kind of movie Marine apparently, since no US tanker would forget they have 3 rounds of canister, which would rape these anyone not behind solid cover. It wasn't a cheap bomb, it was an IED made of 5 155mm arty shells, each packed with an extra 1000 pounds of RDX to knock out a tank. And people inside the tank survived. Another M1 loss was due to the same tactic, but it took 12 155mm shells, and a third was a 2,000 pound bomb, all hidden underground IED style. In each case, people in the tanks lived. The M1 is an actual fucking tank. It's not some Russian piece of shit which would have killed everyone inside, and also blown up itself essentially turning into a 40 ton fragmentation grenade killing people within a 900ft area.

Love how everybody is talking about them getting stomped by tanks, how the army would handle it irl, but nobody is talking about how unrealistic WALKING mechs are
"Unrealistic" except for all the walking robots we've got right now, many of which are either being retooled or specifically designed for military use. Turns out DARPA (and their international equivalents) is staffed with people a fuckload smarter than internet engineers.
@@schmalettesm2069 It's also not as brutally inefficient as many are lead to believe. On the other hand, the advantages in mobility that walking provides are considered so great that actual engineers and smart people are seriously pursuing the concept. In all likelihood, a mixed propulsion unit similar to the EXOs will be what we see. A wheeled/tracked "transport" mode, and a walker mode for doing walker things.
@@schmalettesm2069 It's actually coming along very well. It's less an issue of making stuff walk, and more an issue of making stuff walk as well as living creatures with the same leg layout. As it stands, robots already walk well enough over rough and irregular terrain that basic walkers are more than possible. It also helps that brain-machine interfaces are becoming exceptionally advanced at this point; paraplegic patients are able to control medical exoskeletons with neural feedback systems that make it feel like their legs work again. It's a pretty obvious connection from that to significantly more effective walkers.
I'm a mecha enthuthiast and even I find it hard to believe the exoframes can easily take down the tanks. Should have equipped the frames more to make it more believeable. The exoframe hands should be carrying shield to protect the pilot from machine-gun fire. They also should be carrying more weapons and range explosives to deal with the tanks.
also there was no foot trooper there, if anything they would lay down fire and make sure to get crackshots out and remove the enemy troops. its a common mistake in mech gerna of making the mech the be all and know all on the battlefield. battletech show why mech are the top dogs at times because they are hard to put down even tho they are slow moving things at times, but can easily be taken out at times with careful planning and a good number of tanks that are not out in the open for the mechs to fire on them. Heavy Gear is like this anime as well and can easily be blowned up by a tank crew because they can move and fire and by having a driver and one on the gun its two minds working one unit and in turn become better for it. and god know what would have happen to those exoframe if the US troops had air support of any kind when they attacks.
Is it just me or does japanese animes always get it right when it comes to weapons (and tactics). I mean just look at that m240b with a trijicon, the lav, abrams....... the attention to detail is marvelous
But the problem lies with their military tactics. Case in point. Why would you just deploy abrams without infantry support. You're basically throwing out your most expensive equipment out the window. No tank column would be deployed without light infantry support or would be led first to role down a mobile bridge. The mech suits are not going to be the standards way of fighting wars cause the cheapest so far that the military can afford today are infantry men or special forces from the military that can do the same role without allerting everyone with in the vacinity. The only used i see of those mechs are just either shock troops or mobile infantry support. I respect them for being spot on with their sound design and etc but their lack of research about military tactics really gave me nightmares.
@@paulodepablo3649 I think what that scene was trying to prove was about Bowman's worries about just how easy it is to re purpose the EXOFRAME from a simple labor tool to a weapon, just like how easy it was to mount DShK or a self propelled gun on a pickup and turn a civilian transport into a Technical. It was more of an artistic choice. Had there been infantry, i'd have imagined the entire scene would have been trivialized with enough Marines to at least throw adequate suppressing fire at the EXOFRAME pilots to either throw them off or kill them. Granted i could see how that would have still been an interesting scene had it gone in that manner, where despite a failed attempt at destroying the entire convoy due to the adequate infantry support alongside their remaining US armor assets, the EXOFRAME users would still end up causing a sizable amount of collateral damage in order for people to see the threat the technology poses.

HELLL YEAH! an armor unit like th us forces had could hold off those things until they ran out of ammo. it would be a masacre.... for the mechs.

How would it be handled?
Other tanks would've done a manuever we call "Scratching your wingman's back."
That means another tank would swing its gun onto you and use coax to sweep infantry off.

@@lutherpatenge6313 Also didn't the Marines get rid of all of their tanks

@@NautilusSSN571 It is something recent (But i do now know if they actually did it, i only just heard about them wanting to retire the tanks), the episode takes place in 2015 when such a thing was not even being thought about.
Is it cheaper? Like... maybe. But how do these make troops at all more effective?they run faster? Okay. They still get shot.
It reminds me of old Golden Age Sci-Fi. Can't recommend it enough. Very good story.
Most likely this is just to test the waters and YT cheaped out.
what story?

The amount of care that went into the military realism kind of makes the weird inaccuracies more stark.
None of the unprotected charging mechs should have survived the ammount of firepower that several Abrams platoons can bring to bear. This goes especially because they were able to gather in a defensive line. The only reason the mechs weren't cut down immediately is because of the stormtrooper level accuracy displayed by the crews.
Plus the fact that those exos were running in straight line, I dont even know why those gunners cant even hit them.
They didn't have their crayons to eat that day.

this is actually genius on the alien part, i believe why they're willing to trade the suit for something so abundant and near worthless like limestone to human is because the suit must be a cheap exosuit not intended for combat, but more like a wheelchair to aid the disabled. yet to us human it is something so revolutionary and versatile, a mechanical robot that can be piloted with same grace of that of human body yet with possibly ten or hundred time normal human strength. with that in mind military application is inevitable and smaller nation with no nuke will tear each other apart first with these new machine and then larger superpower will follow. thus, when humanity is weakened through war, the alien will descend from their ship with the REAL military grade exosuit that will outclass everything the human have...
in the end we will be the sucker of our own nature

I love how throughout the show they joke about how it’s like an anime
“How did the bots win?”
“Well, even though they were highly exposed, both the bots and the pilots, somehow we kept missing all our shots!
The tanks can't hit a shot with an advance targeting computer? Maybe no thermal signature from the exosuits?
Their stats is magic, they are [alien] afterall. But they did lost due to necessities. The Abrams canister and FCS would easily take care of them.

Don’t know why they didn’t just use the coax literally no protection for the operator
no doubt
issue being you gotta switch from main to coax and its alot more thinking to switch fire modes then it is to continue engaging with main. so its pretty realistic to see in the chaos of battle.
@@colson3050 Yeah no, any gunner worth their salt who has been in training for any period of time will have switched to Coax. Given maybe the first shot he would have fire cannon as thats what he has selected. But after first shot they would have had tank commander called switch and he'd be switched.
@@codyhawkcaster4671 Cause well facing a weapon not seen before a commander and gunner are going to stop loading the main armerment and go to coax in the hopes of killing the exsuits well also going like 70km in reverse? bro this engagement lasted less then 30 seconds for most these tanks calling bullshit on anyone who thinks a tank crew can react to unknown weapons and decided on a change of fire mode.

2 episodes in and they already mentioned anime twice.. i like it.. anyway it seems all robot is not as useless as they think, they all have potential to be a military weapon just like those farmer robots.. and also they are so cheap for a futuristic robot, and why aliens need limestone with expensive trade like that..? i guess i need to finish this series..
They explained that the robots works using some sort of bacteria so perhaps limestone helps with the procurement of those organic stuff
Its likely a sjow of good faith like a this is what we have to offer yes were legit
Or the goal is destabilization
Supposedly its intende duse is for disabled people
But you know us we will always find a way to weaponize anything and this is well so futuristic powerful cheap bullet proof but to those aliens they see it so useless and not needed like there pure on useless to the aliens and just sold it for limestone cause they probably dont have such thing as limestone or is a luxury to them and because that happend the aliens are somehqat breaking economy for trading this type of tecj for litteral stone you can find in your backyard

Not sure why they didn’t have infantry support. Normal for mechanized units to have infantry attachments to help protect it. I know it’s an animation but food for thought though.
Tanks should have wiped out those shiddy mechs with ease
The plot armor is thick on the mech this one.
This is really good, thank you.
This mechas would be easy target in open space for tanks with machine guns on top. In the city it could work but not in open space.
I’m laughing at you because you think tanks are this accurate under attack 🤣
The Allied forces in Iraq expend 250,000 rounds of ammunition for ever killed insurgent.
Battlefield accuracy is absurdly low. Nobody hits anything in war.
@@GeahkBurchill U compare 90s and early 2000s with 2020 and this movie is shoving something like 2030-2040. Plus this tanks user great tactic. Move back, stop for shot and then move again. From distance of 200-400m this mechas would be to easy target for so big fire power like 6 m.guns and 3 guns shooting HE amo. Now USArmy will be have even more effective HE amo which u can program before shot. All of that telling me that this mechas would be easy targets in open space.
@@zaqwerty22 no, this show takes place in an alternate 2012-2023. And you’re hilariously wrong about the accuracy in battle. Maybe you imagine great hit rates on a range but the real world to totally different.
@@GeahkBurchill LOL, u that object moving with spread around 50km/h and most on straight line like they did, is so difficult to hit? They have no cover, no armour ect. Better check how looked desert storm fights between tanks and how fast western tanks were destroyed T-72. From this distance 200-400m it's impossible not to hit at least few of this mechas. U live in fantasy world if u think that so slow target won't be hired from that distance. HE ammo don't even need to hit. Shock wave and shrapnels will do the job for people who have 0 protection. U want to try? Stand 5 meters from explosives and make it explode. But before that make last will. This scenario is totally unrealistic and u won't convince me it's true and realistic. Insurgents fight in Urbana area and not head to head with tanks LOL. So stupid example.
@@zaqwerty22 bullets are small. Even tank shells are small. The single operators on EXOframes are small, and everyone is in motion on bumpy terrain. Apply the Inverse square law to all projectiles and you’ll quickly see why in a real battle every hit is a practical miracle. Even with explosives and shrapnel. Actual battlefield statistics are abysmal.
But I’m done talking to you. Go to war and find out, kiddo.

The tanks and guns are all so well-detailed.
But the way the mechs win is questionable, the users of the mechs are exposed as hell but somehow didn't get shot, and they used RPGs to take out the Abrams?
Bring back my childhood memory playing Front Mission series 👍
As a tank geek when i heard the abrams gas turbine whirring up i knew they did some research making it
Also the backward speed match it
The guerrillas are also using tandem warhead RPGs, which is the only RPG rocket to have scored kills on Abrams.

Really??? Seriously though... they say an Abrams is 4mioUSD... off by about 8-10mio... lazy
Big facts
I love how these Marines are all the worst kind of movie Marine apparently, since no US tanker would forget they have 3 rounds of canister, which would rape these anyone not behind solid cover. Plus the LAVs 25mm would be best used thumping rounds at anything that moves, with machineguns used to cut down closer in targets. I mean hell, my old Army Mech Battalion was poorly lead, but we would have wrecked those idiots if they charged like that!
ScribeTheGrey agreed. If anything this tactic would work as a surprise but the operators of the mechs were very exposed and easy targets for machine gun fire

Stick a gun on it and make it bigger and we got a wanzer. Since they also need nerve connections
A W did they? im aware of some experimental wanzers in FM universe using nerve connections, but im under the impression that regular wanzers are using some sort of non-neural controls, like joysticks or fancy computers
Front Mission baby!
@@wyg2935 This is true for practically all Wanzers, S- and B- Devices are dead ends due to how temperamental they are (although the S-Devices had the best success overall). Even then, Wanzers get annihilated by tanks (as shown in the 2nd Hoffmann War, as the OCU's tank divisions had cut through the UCS Wanzer units like a knife through butter).

@@Prometheus19853 walking is just not efficient, legs are to complex, especially considering wounds, but yk chains like on tanks on the other hand
@@Prometheus19853 yes it has advantages, but the tech is not nearly advanced enough rn

I agree.they did good on the ambushed on them, crossing the river bridge.the other part, they need more power.
also there was no foot trooper there, if anything they would lay down fire and make sure to get crackshots out and remove the enemy troops. its a common mistake in mech gerna of making the mech the be all and know all on the battlefield.
battletech show why mech are the top dogs at times because they are hard to put down even tho they are slow moving things at times, but can easily be taken out at times with careful planning and a good number of tanks that are not out in the open for the mechs to fire on them.
@@paulodepablo3649 yah it kinda bugged me that there was no infantry to protect those tanks or other amoured units still cool anime tho.
A relatively cheap, yet sophisticated system that can be thrown at NATO at little cost in comparison to rolling out multi billion dollar tanks; Their form of war was about to become Obsolete.
