How to use a linisher - Design at Loughborough University

A linisher uses a moving abrasive belt to smooth material surfaces. In this demonstration, the machine is used to remove the excess braze from the sides of the woodworking plane that our first year undergraduates make in their first semester.
Designers need to understand the properties and applications of all materials and our students are given hands-on training as part of their knowledge and skills advancement. Our metal fabrication workshop is used for the cutting, brazing/welding and assembly of metal prototypes. Students are taught how to safety use hand tools, guillotines and brazing techniques to form and join sheet metal. A baby pram attachment to a wheelchair was one of the prototypes manufactured within this facility recently.
