Much of US imperialist strategy is to weaken Russia - the US will either do business with the regimes if they play ball or will either support uprisings or instigate them in order to create pro-western puppets because, as you say, that part of the world is very wealthy in resources. But Russia must be weakened first, hence the war with Ukraine.
Intresting fact: Ukrainian volunteers from the UNA-UNSO took part in the Transnistrian conflict on the side of the separatists, because in Transnistria most of the population were Ukrainians.
