Saw "How the West was Won" down at the Seattle Cinerama Theatre in October 2011. Awesome. If you're curious about the theater itself, the "Inside the Cinerama" clip by KOMOcommunities will give you a glimpse therein.
Harry Morgan wasn't even mentioned in the original print publicity for this picture, but he gives the best filmic portrayal ever of the greatest American combat general ever, Ulysses S. Grant. (Or maybe he's tied with George Patton.) He's on the screen for approximately 30 seconds but these are vivid and real seconds.
A supercilious remark from a Brit. Knowledgeable Americans will readily agree with "Au Andrew." Wise Americans will say, "Half right" and then will say, "The people depicted in this film had guts, and didn't Winston Churchill say that guts, courage, was the cardinal human quality, because it guaranteed all the others?" I'm guessing "Au Andrew" doesn't have the slightest idea what Churchill was talking about.
