Completely agree... different languages bring out different aspects of one’s personality. It’s very natural for tone to shift, mannerisms, etc. I think acknowledging the cultural context the language is spoken in is so important for communicating with people. I think of it like.... I can understand a different point of view when I switch between languages. Also, I’m glad you brought up the dialect/language thing. In some parts of the world, I feel like native speakers of the “dominant” language call other *languages* “dialects” (even though a linguist would recognize them as a separate language) because they don’t see them as being “equal” to their language. That’s always bothered me lol. Just because one language has several million more speakers doesn’t mean other languages in the country are not still languages... And, yes I also totally agree with you on the point that a lot of times people confuse languages and dialects.When I say that in Ghana there are many different languages spoken, people usually want to correct me and say dialects because I guess they don't understand the concept of several languages being spoken in one country as this is not the case in most European countries, for example. I never thought of language learning in this way, though I did notice slight changes in my friends who speak multiple languages (like what you said about accessing different parts of their personality). I currently only speak English, but my goal currently is to learn German and then continue learning more languages. It's definitely overwhelming for me (because I'm always afraid I'll make a mistake and offend someone on accident) but I'm excited to learn more about the different aspects of German culture and hopefully be able to have positive language exchanges as well. i completely agree with everything you said!! ever since learning french, i feel like I've taken a whole new personality; càd i become more prosed and thoughtful when i speak french. i told my friend this, who is a native French and English speaker (il est quebecois) and he responded to me "then who is the real Alexis then?" - his sentiment made me question myself but i suppose both parts are "the real me" and watching your video helped me realize that it's just that another facet of myself is brought out more when I speak a certain language! p.s. i also completely agree when you were talking about Spanish - i become so much more fun and open when i speak it because that's how natives speak!

Hi Eve, I could not agree more with that you said about changing identity regarding different languages. My mother tongue language is Hungarian. The language is very difficult but at the same time extremely descriptive with several conjugations, different suffixes of the nouns and adjectives that correspond to the context. It sounds softly. The historical background of the country is very sad and gloomy, that's why the people are always kind of gloomy. No light talks, always talks about problems and politics. It gives an identity how to talk in Hungarian. 🇭🇺 Spanish is my favourite language because the language brings the culture, the music and the welcoming people into your aura. I feel happier when I just only listen to the language. And OMG when you listen to Álvaro Morte speaking, it brings the sunshine into the language. 😍😁🇪🇦 English language is a tricky one. When I learnt English in the States🇺🇲 and lived there a while, I loved it. American English was equal "Friends" and the openness and fun of the language in my mind. I felt myself pretty fluent back then. My English ruined in the UK🇬🇧. I experienced so much hate and insult because of my accent in the Brexit UK, that I lost my enthusiasm for the language and it created an anxiety anytime I try to express myself in English. I see English now as a necessary language for survival without any kind of fun. I understand almost everything in English but when speaking comes, I struggle to speak well. Yes, so true! All the points you touched on are totally accurate. The history and identity is very much reflected in the language. I totally understand that "gloomy" and "negative" aspect. I also find that French and German culture are generally more negative and criticising. And that is also very much reflected in the language. It is very detailed and things are often expressed in the negative form. However Spanish is much more positive and that is something that I associate with speaking Spanish, too!

I feel the same!! This is something that my french's teacher always says to us in class. When I'm speaking french my personality becomes more sofisticate and and when I'm speaking italian I sound more relaxed.

I've noticed also my mannerisms change when I speak Mandarin. I've also noticed the difference between Taiwanese and Chinese Dramas. Taiwanese are more free in their speaking. The women are more aggressive and sometimes they are gentle. I like the Taiwanese way more but still appreciate China. I'm not even fluent in Mandarin yet but I have noticed those things.

I now understand why I tend to "act" differently and especially think differently when I speak isiZulu (my home language), English, and Afrikaans. LOVE this video! One thing I've also noticed by knowing three languages, is that each language expression is completely unique. I've found that when learning a practising a language (especially after beginner level) you need to throw everything you know about other languages out of the window. Hear me out haha. You really cannot direct translate any phrase. Although it might be accurate grammatically, the frequency it is used as well as the emotions it connotes are completely different. 'C'est pas grave' is a staple in French - yet 'it's not serious' is rarely used compared to the English counterpart: 'it's fine' or 'no worries'. 'C'est pas vrai' is used much more frequently than 'It's not true' (the direct translation). The emotions related to 'C'est pas vrai' are much more similar to the English exclamation of 'OH MY GOD'. Is this just me??

Yes, you're right! I was thinking about that, too. Of course, there are regional and cultural differences even if people share the same language, however in the case of Suriname and the Netherlands for example, Suriname also has native Creole and native languages which are definitely going to be different when people express themselves in that language. I have a friend from Aruba and Dutch is the official language however he is much more expressive and comfortable speaking Creole which he identifies with more. That is the essence of his culture. Most African countries also have an official language like English, French, Portuguese etc. but those languages do definitely not a 100% reflect the people's culture because it was put and forced unto them and they have their own regional languages which absolutely do reflect their identity and culture. That is why a lot of people are even more comfortable with speaking their native language. But I also do think that the Dutch that is spoken in the Netherlands and Belgium just like the German that is spoken in Austria, Switzerland and Germany does vary however the essence of the Germanic culture is pretty much the same because it has the same origin. The essence of Spanish speaking cultures and latin cultures are also very similar even if they vary in dialects and accents.

And - do you know the book "Weltbilderschütterung" from Erhard Landmann? He says, that german has influenced most languages on this planet and he shows up lots of examples. About dialects. When country is multiethnic and some languages called "dialects" its about politic for wipe of another languages and assimilate ppl. But when its one ethnic, dialects are creating the language, one dialect can be introduced in literature language and for learning, i mean, one dialect can be elect for education and government but it's still dialect, one dialect cannot represented ALL language. It's because even one ethnic cannot be monotonous. And it's not only in language! It's also in religion and culture! But also, i know cases when government wipe of a dialects in their own language: it's France and Russia, but do it impossible, so dialects are still exists but not introduced into media.
