Hell no I just raced a professional road cyclist with my e mountain bike on a bike trail. My e bike goes over 40 mph and he gave me a hell of a race! I was pedaling my ass off! I let him pass me at 33mph as the bike path we were on was for walkers and bikers so it became to dangerous. His legs were the size of my waist. Lol. I don't know how fast he can go or what his gearing was on his bike but I would be nervous racing him for money even with my bike. He was about 28 years old im 55.
yeah why tf would he do that battery thing or at least joke about. definitely would have been interesting. not like they’re not on e bikes already. (sportsmanship)
Great respect for Pauline to take this on. Lets face it you guys had 10kg extra bike and 500 to 800 watts help when climbing whereas Pauline at her size can prob average no more than 300 watts.
Interesting that we rode Whinlatter in the snow this weekend..I derestricted my bike for the ride cos I fancied having a laugh in the snow and no ripping up the trails. I really did leave my mate on his restricted Cube Stereo for dead on the long climbing trails and hes a lot fitter than me. Downside..my battery died 200yds from the end of only a 12 mile blast.
This would have better if Chris had full batteries. You get a chance to show 3 styles and mess it up . Never mind the rubbish about saying unrestricted wouldn’t have made a difference, we would have like to have seen it . Sorry guy’s this is the first 👎 for me after 2 years ☹️
Great assessment for £5000 + ebikes. .I can manage 40 miles on local hilly trails(south pennines) with my £1200 bafang bbs01 mid drive powered Cube Analog MTB home build with 630watt battery .
After seeing this I think the big question is : Is this the right way to ride a ebike? Wouldn't it be better to ride the first lap without assistance thereby getting an average speed and then set the motor cutoff using that value?
In Martyn’s trial video they should have used Sam Pilgrim as well vs Rob Warner. If you don’t know why I mentioned this go check out Sam Pilgrims latest video in Malaga(hope I spelt the name right)
Yhea cos Chris had no idea that was going to happen did he, just as the fact Chris was derestricting his bike was a total shocker to Steve. Don't really get why you'd bother with the "story" telling when the idea of trying to show the difference between restricted and not was a good idea anyway for this video as it brought an extra element. Plus how exactly did Chris catch up so easily if derestricting was no benefit at all on that track.
I expected her to win! I was surprised that Steve was able to keep up with her on the downhill. I expected her to have way better bike handling skills than him.
By watching these videos I just appreciate regular bikes more and more... the simplicity of riding without the help of a motor and not thinking about batteries is just awesome. Btw I'm not an 'ebike hater' as I have a Commencal Meta Power but this year I enjoyed riding my Orbea Occam more.
If you go for long trip than very very light bike is better choice than e bike. I use my e bike because after work it allows me to get faster to the mountain top before the darkness so I can go downhill in day lighting still. Yes problem with e bike is battery. If you must save energy you can not use full power you have no fun. I like both bikes and derestricted bike is much better because I am more tired after trip. It is because to keep 35 kph speed you must use much more energy than going 23 kph on restricted bike.
Chris Kros I didn’t derestrict mine on principle. Only the assist is limited so if I have the power I can ride above the assist limit and if I don’t then I don’t have to... I just find these ‘let’s race an XC pro on an ebike’ kind of sad...
@@tamasvarga67 You must be King Kong. I have a regular 14km trail loop with 400m elevation and I can do it on my restricted Meta Power in 45min while it takes 1h5min on my Orbea Occam trail bike. So what’s the issue with the 25kph assist limit? For me, absolutely nothing... I enjoy that I can ride my ebike everywhere where I can ride my regular bike but derestriction is working against the current favorable classification of the 25kph ebikes - in the EU at least...

There would be difference of maybe 5min between a man xc pro and woman xc pro also. Would have been better to have Chris in Boost and Steve in Trail only.
As a xc racer myself, I have lost fitness since riding my ebike. It is more fun, but not as hard as Xc. But pro rider also ride ebike sometimes. I would like to know the details on how and when they incorporate ebike: revovery ride only ? No ridding in boost maybe ? Riding in eco only ? Maybe ask Julien Absalon who rides for Moustache.
I believe its for when they want to do long rides at a low consistent heart rate a lot of the time just to get the miles in the legs but at low effort. It's as a sort of rest day ride but going further than they would have before for the same effort. There's some thinking that it's a better thing to do for those rest day rides, to be riding longer distances but for no extra effort than before as it keeps the blood flowing through their muscles longer without causing stress and it also gives them more control over their effort so they never have to push harder than they want to, should be keeping their heart rate at a steady, constant level.
@@itarry4 i agree with you. That's what I am trying to do now, ebike for recovery day and normal xc bike for intensity rides. Some would argue that you can do an intensity ride on a ebike also...
@@JcBonneville you probably can. I think it's a bad idea to ride any other bike than your race bike during the racing season though, preferably with different wheels on to protect your expensive race wheels if you've got them, or even better an exact copy of the bike, if you're lucky enough to have one. Really you want to get as used to your bike as possible so you ride it almost without thinking and it feels like a totally natural thing. I don't see any advantages to riding an ebike hard other than the 2 I said above. In fact the opposite is possibly true as you'd be putting more stress on certain areas, that you possibly don't want to be, you'll be learning to ride in a totally different way to how you'd ride your race bike, picking up bad habits and getting used to the handling of a heavy bike probably with more travel ebike. Getting used to it having different abilities, positives and negatives and a different geometry and the way it'd handle and reacts in different situations. In this as well the slow, steady ride is a different thing to pushing hard. As I say though you can go as hard, fast and long as you want on any bike. Pushing not just your fitness but your ability and technique as far as you want to regardless of if the bike has a motor in it or not. You can even manage it on a road bike or Cyclocross/Gravel bike if you want to. I'd even say there's a good case to be argued for having the ebike you own as a Gravel type bike if what you really want from it is the ability to do long, steady, controlled rides. Probably less chance of injuring yourself as you'd be on easier, less technical or rocky trails your less likely to attempt to push the limit on the difficulty of the trails you'd pick if you got board, you'd get more scope to control your ride and the effort you put in to it and as its so different to what you normally do it'd possibly stay quite fresh for a good while. The bike being lighter and the places you'd go would be so much less techy and different that you'd probably pick up even fewer bad habits and lastly they're re easier to use on a indoor set up if the weather is bad, it's easier to spin your legs at a high cadence as they are geared differently and if you use your ebike to commute to work they're much better suited to what you'll be riding on the way to and from work and would get there lots faster meaning more time in 🛏 of having a ☕ in the morning.
