About Papillon (1973):
The autobiography of Henri Charriere, one of the few people to successfully escape from the notorious French penal colony of Devil's Island, served as the basis for Papillon. Steve McQueen plays the pugnacious Charriere (known as "Papillon," or "butterfly," because of a prominent tattoo), incarcerated--wrongly, he claims--for murdering a pimp. He saves the life of fellow convict Louis Dega (Dustin Hoffman), a counterfeiter who will later show his gratitude by helping Charriere in his many escape attempts.
Directed By Franklin J. Schaffner
Starring Steve McQueen, Dustin Hoffman, Victor Jory

The actor playing the condemned man did an outstanding job. He exhibited sheer terror in the face of his imminent death.
Indeed. They say to have dignity in death, but I'm sure I would be fighting to the end, just like this guy. Terrifying.
I think they killed him for real, to add drama.
@@monkeyboy4746 true, it was my great uncle. Still although he died, his widow got £500 tax free. A Decent amount 50 years ago.
@@michaelmolony2501 I honor his sacrifice for this wonderful movie.
@@monkeyboy4746 That's a lovely response and greatly appreciated. Do you know, as a tribute to my great uncle they actually mounted his severed head above the fireplace. It certainly was a focal point of conversation during afternoon tea and hobnobs. Thanks again. Michael
This is awesome!
Love the special defects.
What a way to go!
What did he do ?
In the movie the warden said the rules escape two years in solitary confinement second five more years of solitary confinement also maybe depending of what you did a life sentence on Devil's Island if committed murder or way too serious offenses you'll be executed
That jump-cut tho...
Pretty painful and quick tho.
You understand that this was a real decapitation right
Executioner: Any last words?
Yeah... Are you sure this Is safe?
oh man i died laughing 😂😂
heaven is guaranteed
Of course it, is not safe bro

When this was made the French were still using the Guillotine.
Guillotine was used for the last time in 1977. Capital punishment abolished in 1981 by the Socialist government, a courageous move against public opinion. Le Pen's National Front wants it back. Nothing surprising coming from a man who was a torturer during the Algerian war.
Because of Mitterand's action, today the situation in France sucks.
obeying order of France, your country genocide millions of algerian innocent women children men and still you can accuse other nations for human rights ironic.
Fartimus Bumworthy yes they even execute their king and queen
Certainly not! He was a far right zealot already, and a racist. You should not defend such a criminal...unless you share his ideas, which I hope you don't. With such way of reasoning, you could also defend the SS who, among many crimes, murdered American soldiers in Malmedy, Belgium.
Play the video at 0.25x speed..
And look at 0:59 ..
Magic the man will be changed
XD
True
XD
Dude teleported
He actually managed to escape :o
0:59 they really failed on cutting the part.
Ikr
Ye
Lucky him he used the substitution jutsu at the last second.
Pelcogo you noticed the dummy?
You need hand signs for Jutsu! Ante no gettin out of this one. Once that blade severs the neck death is immanent in 10 seconds.
Pelcogo lmao Yass Naruto
Pelcogo but he didn't do any hand sign
Craig F. Thompson No it doesn't! After the head is decapitated your brain dies from BL and OD in 10 seconds!😒
Very effective....seems to be a jump cut to a dummy.
You expected a real beheading?
1. that's racist
2. you are a psychopath
3. oops... in 2 i insulted hitler
that was an old movie all kills in old movies till 1989 were real... so was the beheading... the actors from that time run around today? now thats a hollywood cgi trick
😂
Christopher Thorkon .Did you really think it was for real.
I see these comments about the video and cut speed. May I remind everyone that this movie was made in 1973.. They didn't have the technology back then that we have now. They worked with what they had.. The movie turned out to be really good in my opinion..
And we also didn't have home video recording, so we could play it back in slow mo. When you saw it at the cinema back then, as I did, it was real enough in that split second. It was pretty brutal at that time, unlike today where no amount of blood, guts, violence and killing seems to be over the top anymore. And, unfortunately, today's audiences have a problem separating reality from fiction, and let this apathy towards violence and gore creep into their own real life behavioral patterns.
Its bad for 1973, effects whatever, but the editing is horrible
True, but even in 1973, how hard could it have been to leave the camera in the same position instead of physically moving it between the shots?
they could have at least put the camera in a similar spot.
This is still bad quality for the time. You can clearly see the blade even stop before they change scene, and suddenly the sun is shining right at the camera
Papillon is a great film Steve McQueen should have gotten a Oscar for his role as Papillon he was robb of it. Dustin Hoffman should have gotten best supporting actor for his role as Louis Dega. Film Papillon should have gotten a Oscar for best film of 1973 and Oscar for best cinematography.
pause at 0:59 LOOOOL, he suddenly becomes about 20 years younger and turns to latex
Also the sun's position rapidly changes
What did you expect? Maybe for them to use it on you for real...
Watch it at a quarter speed, its so much worse
I seriously can not stop laughing holy shit, special effects have come a long way
SO IT'S FAKE
Worst jump cut ever!
shoeswithnosocks 1973 stupid.
shoeswithnosocks Not to people with actual lives who don't spend all their times looking at a one second clip over and over again to see if it looks "real" or not. Seriously, *there's something wrong with you people* . Who the hell notices this in such a short clip?? Think *anybody* noticed this when they watched the movie? No, they didn't rewind the clip and stopped.
How do you not notice it? It's a completely different angle. There must be something wrong with your eyes.
EGB_469
Not only that, both the sun and the blade are at completely different positions! I love this movie, it's actually one of my all-time favorites. But this scene is just... awful.
Also, the guillotine operator "pops up" after the transition...
Absolute Classic film, ive watched this film a hundred times since I was a kid,And every time I watched it,I just wanted to be Steve Mc Queen 😊
You just wanted to be a Queen.
@@ЭстебанПантера It is true that Mc Queen was bisexual and had sex with famous men like Brando, Dean and Olivier. He also had sex with pretty much any woman that let him. His early life was sad. Born to a poor prostitute whose "boyfriends" pimped him out to men. That was the start.

Wow
Yooo wtfff😂😭 thx
YOOOO😂😂😂😂😂
Ikito how bad
I'm pretty sure the first angle of the blade dropping before it switches to the latex head was shot in reverse. If you watch it in slow motion the blade completely stops for about half a second or so 0:58 before cutting to the latex head getting decapitated
I am a kid for some reason I wanted to see this so I looked it up now I am scared
Its not Good to know everything
@@RTX2080TIGAMES no it's cool vid
Good luck
Same with me

When this movie was released, it would be 4 years until the Last Guillotining, And more until it was outlawed.
Great timeless classic movie, based on a true story
The story is bullshxt.
@@derrickbrann2373 Entirely not true?
Partially not true?
Or your just yacking ?
Terrific movie. I couldn't watch the remake that was done a few years ago.
The reboot was horrid. This movie was the only movie that I saw McQueen have any acting chops. I still don't get this man's allure.
Marie Antoinette was Queen of France 🇫🇷 and her head was cut off by a guillotine.
I'm pretty sure it would take more then 2 guards to retrain a man fighting for his life...
He looked quiet healthy and able to cause more problems.
he had his hands already tied behind his back. Without them, there's really nothing else you can do but scream for mercy and spit.
Omg i wach this film and i hate this part.
No quiero ni pensar cuánta gente murió de la misma manera, y entre ellos hay un rey
The clip was completely ruined by the pop up adverts at the end.
My parents took me with them to see this at a drive-in theater. I was 9. No babysitter was available! ... I'll never forget the scene where a prisoner was trying to escape and he was shot in the head, and of course this scene. Didn't have nightmares, and actually have had a fascination with the guillotine since. I put out a cool Halloween display every year, which includes a beheaded Marie Antoinette doll a friend made for me. I've wanted to make a mock guillotine to complete the "prop" :-) ...
I was 9 when I first watched it but I had to read the book first nanas rules of letting me watch to this day I still love the book and film
I too, have this fascination with the guillotine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So there are at least two of us in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I suspect that there are more of us out there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! By the way, as they say, if this is insanity, I don't suffer from it, I actually do love every minute of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, by the way, HEADS WILL ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don’t see why they would do that instead of those jails that they passed and how would the executioner feel if that was him
Reminds me of myself when I was dragged to see that Amy Schumer special.
kev3d I’m so annoyed this comment has very little attention - this is spot on 😂
Why did you have to see it?
😂
this film was released before the death penalty was abolished in 1981 in france
The US is such a backward nation
And before the last use of the guillotine in 1977.
Une méthode bien française, Messieurs.
the book was better than the movie as often the case, the book i read several times over a few years, once i'd started i found it hard to put down, great life story
Same. I read it when I was 14 and I couldn't put it down. Very disappointed in the movie though.
Amazing way to execute prisoners, we should adopt this method and televise it on national TV. Not sure it would deter crime but at least it'll give us something funny to watch.
In World War II Germany used a gulliotine
Great movie, Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman are awesomes !! The end always maked me crying. ( the dummy looks like McQueen's head). 😮😮
GUARD 1 : AWW , stop the fuss you're making!!
GUARD 2 : yeah , don't lose your head over this!!
GUARD 1 : y'know thats dark ...
GUARD 2 : don't care , now who's for a cold chop ?
PRISONER : ... sigh ...
Scared the piss out of me when I was a kid.
Yeah. This scene still comes around to visit the front of my brain from time to time.
The whole leading up to it.
Attn: RUclips. You've inflicted that screaming Disney commercial on me at least threescore times. I was ambivalent about Disney before, now I loathe them.
Awesome contrast of mood after decapitation image you see Dustin Hofmann shocked face and suddenly he changes mood because of the improper question the old man asked at that precise moment.. it felt such hilarious moment .
00:58 ummmmm
Its just strawberry jam
Dylan T lol
Play 0:58 at 0,25X speed. No actor has been harmed during the filming of this movie. haha
The guillotine was still a form of execution in France when this was released.
Now they slap you on the wrist and send you to bed without supper.
Not cool, it is human rights, you should be free from torture or death penalty, I swear not fucking cool
It was such a grand execution that the sun suddenly appeared from the left and a man suddenly appeared on the right.
0:58
Yah.!.!.
Stop breakin the law ass whole..
0:58-0:59 the suns position though....come on guys..who u tryna fool lol. And at 1:00 look at that “blood”
Bruh do you would want to die in just a dumbass movie
It's a movie calm down
It is said that at the hight of the terror in Paris that a ditch was dug round the guillotine and it was overflowing with blood
Bruh
Now-a-days youll get this treatment for mis- pronouning someone.
Watch it in slow motion. You can see the exact moment he is replaced with a dummy.
You didn't expect them to use a real person did you?
This your first time???
0:58 slow mo-the blade stops before hitting his head
The irony of having a priest present at executions is amazing
Nice to see the blade fall without the rope still attached. A mistake a lot of movies make.
@Solomon Arthur So was Alice Cooper's guillotine stunt on stage every night in 1973, which looked real enough
0:58 Thank me later
I hate gilloutines very scary
Pretty intense scene for the time.
"STOP DRAGGING YOUR DAMN FEET!" You're making this scene last longer😩
one of the best way to execute prisoners, no pain, no mistakes
0:59
this scene was cut from the later version
Why why bad humans l hate humans!!
*Guillotine*
So dangerous that it even changed his face 0:58
I know right like WOW he was just like 60 and now hes 20 and has went on latex :O Wow :)
Guess he ate to much latex and turned to latex
This film was released in 1973 the last man executed by guillotine in France was in 1977, incredible to think of that.
you can tell it's not real
Gary Eaton lol. How in the hell can you tell that? Looks real to me
TCG1984 it's a movie :p
Gary Eaton really?????
gsxr 1000 hope you don't think it's real
no shit sherlock !!!
The priest makes this scene even more eerie
That part they got wrong. In the time when this was set, the priest would have been praying in Latin.
0:58 to 0:59 pause quickly it changes the face so it's a dummy
You're a dummy.
Yeah, they generally don't actually kill the actor when they make a movie...
@@johnbacon2515 Except Green Mile. RIP that guy.
Stop watching the special effects and rent this movie and watch it, or get it online for free. There is a story behind this movie and it will take 2 hours of your life to watch it. Put your phone down, turn off your laptop, and watch the movie. It is considered one of the greatest movies ever made and it stars Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman and a bunch of other well known actors of the day.
That's a classic for sure. I was on my seats end the first time I saw the movie. I recommend don't watch alone.
KETCHUP WARNING
0:59 pause and you can see he’s statue head thingy
hi
That was fast
Worst jump cut ever?
Steve McQueen was the greatest!!!
Spawn Haha Check his face watching everything in this scene. Hoffman too. Then as soon as that guy dies all that old guy cares about is prison business.. Can't be beaten, this stuff.
Executions suck
fastest death ever, no pain, its quick
How woud know that there is no pain? The brain probably takes seconds if not minutes to die.
Jeezus so many kids commenting that have no idea how good we have it now with special FX. This was old school. We knew it was blatantly fake and shrugged it off. Overall this movie is still a classic.
Wow. Love the effect when the blade
goes down, stops then all of a sudden there’s red pain scattered on the camera lens.
Is it bad that I enjoy watching these things
Steve McQueen's best role.
No contest. It was the only movie where I was impressed with his acting.
@0:59
The face suddenly changed, look at x0.25 speed
It is safe to say the he will not be HEADING home anytime soon.
I just can't get it into my head why people make lame puns.
TheLastOfTheFinest80 man these puns give me a HEADache 🤕
You should quit while you're ahead.
To be brutally honest, if I was going to be executed, and had a choice in the method of my death, I would definitely choose the guillotine. The guillotine chops off your head in a split second. I can’t imagine that you suffer much having your head chopped off on the guillotine. The guillotine would most definitely be my choice for a quick death.
I think a concrete wall slab of about 12 feet x 8 feet x 1.5 feet, dropped vertically onto a head from 10 feet up would remove any doubt of lingering brain activity. There are plenty of them in every city in North America.
Same here, we need to bring back the GUILLOTINE!
Ha, the switch to the dummy coincides with the executioner appearing, as if by magic!
😭😭😭😭IM KIDS
Watch it on 0.25 speed and see how ridicilous it looks like hahahahah
RUclips said this was inappropriate
Is that only me , who expected this to be a comedy scene ?.... lol
