    I was at this game, and this is the first time I've seen the highlights since that day. It was a great occasion, even though I went to the game as an Everton supporter, I was at Poly in Coventry. Was really happy for the CCFC supporters, their joy was contagious, even though we had lost 4-1. My first love, football-wise, are Barrow AFC, so I know what they were going through on the day.

      I recall Norwich were 8 points ahead of us and their manager, sensibly, said "I'd rather have the 8 points than the 3 games". The greatest of escapes. Of course, Coventry having the 3 games in hand and knowing they had to win all 3, was a bit unfair on Norwich and these days wouldn't be tolerated. But at the time nobody neutral thought Cov had a chance.

    Fair play to Cov for their 'great escape' but this game stunk as much as the booze on the Everton players breaths. Must have been a bitter pill to swallow for Norwich - with the double blow of relegation and missing out on European football because of the ban after Heysel.

    We might have been half-arsed and already Champions, but this performance was a disgrace and unfair on Norwich who were relegated because of our hapless 'efforts' on this day. Years later, Chelsea thankfully, didn't perform like this when we were in relegation trouble in 94 and 98.

      BlueTrueScouse , there were no 'we wuz robbed' feelings from NC supporters - We (NCFC) drifted along after winning the league cup, only winning on the last game at Chelsea. EFC had 2 Cup finals & the 1st Division ..I don't blame em for 'having a rest' at the end ..we felt a bit sore at not being allowed to play in Europe the next season due to the events of 3 days later...

      @@mohdazmi10 The Manchester City one in 1982-83 was even more astonishing than that. They actually won their first 3 games to top the table in early September as the only team to claim the maximum 9 points,and Swansea who eventually went down as well were 2nd on goal difference with 7! Manchester City were still as high as 2nd in November and 9th in January but once they were routed 4-1 at Southampton in the FA Cup 4th round it all went horribly wrong for them. Meanwhile,the three teams that were in the relegation zone at Christmas all stayed up (Birmingham,Norwich and Sunderland),as did Luton with their last gasp victory at Maine Road on the last day of the season. Coventry tumbled from 5th place and daring to dream about Europe at the start of March to only staying up by winning at Stoke on the penultimate Saturday and coming fourth from bottom. Oh,and the other relegated side,Brighton,drew 2-2 with Manchester United in the FA Cup final and had a late chance to win it. The sheer extent to which money dictates everything means that such craziness couldn't happen now!

      there were international matches 2 days after this too... real fixture congestion at the end of 1985 season

    • @rjjcms1
      @rjjcms1 4 года назад

      The fixture congestion happened because of heavy snow bringing things to nearly an entire halt between the middle of January and the tail end of February. The final round of fixtures was on the second Saturday of May,the date of the Bradford fire disaster. League Cup winners Norwich completed all their fixtures by that afternoon,and were left fourth bottom with 49 points from their 42 games in a 22-club top division. Coventry were on 41 points with three postponed fixtures still to play,against Stoke,Luton and Everton,and won all of them to stay up! Norwich,whose manager Ken Brown opted to spend his afternoon out walking his dog while the Coventry v Everton game decided his team's fate,came straight back up as Second Division champions the next year. Everton had already won the league on May Day Monday,five days before the regular season finished,ahead of reigning champions Liverpool,and though as holders they lost the FA Cup Final to Norman's Whiteside's extra time strike for Manchester United they blitzed Bayern Munich and Rapid Vienna in their last two engagements to lift the old European Cup Winners' Cup,only to denied European football the next season because of the 5-year ban on English clubs resulting from the Heysel disaster on the last Wednesday evening of that May.

    This whole situation was a fucking disgrace and storing up 3 games at the end of the season after Norwich had finished their season would never be allowed today. In fact, I think it was this very outrageous end to the season that brought in the rule of everybody finishing on the same day subsequently.
    Not sure who I hate more: Coventry for their epic shithousery or Everton for turning up pissed and not giving a shit!
    The whole thing stank at the time as a 12 year old Norwich fan and still does to this day. Which is why I, and many other Canaries, have absolutely no sympathy for Cov's self implosion in recent years.
    Fuck'em.

    • @shannonllewellyn7261

      Shithousery does not extend to controlling the weather to create a fixture pile-up.

      You can't blame Coventry for Stoke missing a penalty in their game; and Luton gave their everything to prevent a Cov win. It was only Everton who went missing.

      A similar situation allowed Liverpool to win the Championship in 1976. They played their last game weeks after the season had finished.

    • @rjjcms1
      @rjjcms1 Год назад

      It was the vagaries of the weather that was to blame,as heavy snow from the second week of January onwards played havoc with the schedules,and was still on the ground in places through the first half of March. That caused big fixture pile-ups,more at some clubs than others,and prevented any hope of the season being completed on time. Apparently,'flu laid much of the Coventry squad low over that year's sleety Easter (Saturday 6th/Monday 8th April) to cause an additional postponement. Remarkable escape by Coventry but extremely unfortunate for Norwich.
