Great video! My question is , will all bucks that shed below they’re seal succumb from that injury or only when it gets into the skull plate ?

That's crazy the skull broke off with the antler. Do you think maybe it was fractured during a fight during the rut and that's why the skull came off with it?

Very informative..well explained and great all around video..i live in the pine thickets of south new jersey and also a die hard shed enthusiasts..a good amount of my finds are broken abscision line pedicles with damage i would consider very harmful if not fatal...im very curious to why my particular area experiences these problems..every winter i find several antlers with damaged pedicles..large and small..my area consists of majority pine an sand..scrub oak and swamp..very little agriculture..most of the sheds i find are located near retention ponds where green vegetation grows through winter and greenbriar thickets..the deer dont have much to browse here..if you see this please respond with your insight

Jason, the broken abscission line is likely initiated by a pedicle injury, which then gets infected by bacteria. We don’t know if both injury and bacteria are needed for the broken line to occur. Based on a general (but not specifically informed) perception of your sandy, scrub oak lands, we would expect mineral deficiencies and lower protein content of forage, which likely contribute to weaker than normal antler structure. So, yes, your observation could certainly be related to nutrient deficiency.

Do you think deer bleed every time they shed and how about the horn being bloody every time it sheds?

Sometimes I find sheds like that where they shed part of the skull, and I hate finding them like that because you know that animal is in pain.
