Actually you don't have to collect the red rings for super sonic in the 3ds version. You just have to finish an act with at least 100 rings I think, to go to the special stage, which has frustrating controls.
You can use Super Sonic in the final boss on the 3DS version. The black hole that appears after a giant fireball explodes will still kill you if you get caught in it, though.

at least his rings don't drain like how they do in generations, and he has the boost ability, not only that, but you can turn off super sonic, and he has a good theme that's not 5 seconds long

lost world's super sonic is really fun and is my favorite super sonic to play as, the worst is generations cause it's auto pilot
