That was actually the first movie that Dale Dye was a military consultant for. It was not until a year or so later that he became a well known name for Platoon.
And because of him, almost all of the Marines in that movie are real Marines. I was one of them, and they pulled us from every unit in the LA area to participate in that shoot. It was a lot of fun, and believe it or not that hillside with the fence was actually inside of a sound stage in Hollywood. We must have run up and down that damned thing two dozen times, just doing it over and over again. The scenes where the space ship was located was filmed at an old quarry in Simi Valley, about 20 miles away.
Fun times, some of us from my old unit still talk about that shoot to this day.

That's awesome, thanks for sharing your story, what a fun film to be a part of. Dale Dye seemed like a nice guy, from my drunken interaction with him anyway. I nearly took my Platoon DVD for him to sign but stupidly chickened out, still at least I came away with a little anecdote 😄. ~ S

@@cineXplorers He was already somewhat of a legend by that time in the Corps, and it has even grown since then.
And if you want to know a bit more trivia, you have likely seen the movie "Full Metal Jacket". The movie is based on a novel called "The Short Timers" by Gustav Hasford. Centering around the author who was a military journalist and involved in the Tet Offensive.
Shortly after they cut to the sequences in Vietnam there is a meeting with several other Marine journalists present, and one of them appears to be much older than the others that is named "Daddy DA". The actual character appears in the novel and was intended to be the fictionalized Dale Dye as he served with Hasford in Vietnam.

Can never have enough Dale Dye trivia 👍
Full Metal Jacket is a fantastic film, will have to read The Short Timers one of these days.
