I'd like to add some advice for the people still learning. The jump is a completely separate motion than the pop/slide. A lot of times, people will try to jump and smack the tail at the same time. You have to jump first and get your body's momentum going upwards, and then as you feel your weight starting to come off the board and your knees begin to extend, THEN you smack/slide and bring your legs up to bring the board up. You don't go up with the board at the same time, your body goes up and THEN you make the board follow it. Watch him ollie, and press the back arrow and replay it quickly over and over. Watch his body and you'll notice that he's on an upward trajectory before the the snap happens. Part of it is timing and the other part is keeping your weight centered/balanced as you're jumping.
thank you so much, I swear I remember hearing it was at the same time but that makes much more sense and seems easier. Will see how it goes tomorrow, thanks man.
I know this video is way too old for anyone to even see it, but I am 28 years old, and I am suffering from depression after I move out. I have problems for fall sleep. And today my woman gave me one skateboard. Well I promissed her to give it a go, and I landed my first shove it in my first day. Thanks to you my dude. Sorry my alkward gramar, Inglish is not my native tongue. Huge thanks from a nobody from the south of Brazil. You guys are more than just my inspiration. My dream now is to one day travel to U.S. and at least give a look at the Braille house. Thank you again for what you give me and to the community. (I will start saving my money for the trip, I need to do that one day :)).
it cures depression from a combination of intense focusing on the present moment, there is no past or future when skating your hardest because the present moment is so important right then, if you lose focus you could receive injury which in return is kicking in adrenaline. this is the basic definition of meditation- an intense focus on the present moment, your brain simply has no capacity at that moment for depression or anxiety. the other factor is your body is being flooded with endorphines and adrenaline from a physical activity which is the highest you can possibly get, seems like that repairs neurons in some way making anxiety go away. the factor is its a very high cardio work out, it pushes toxins out of you. when i was skating my hardest every day i had a resting heart rate of 45bpm, which is marathon runner health.
I’m 28 too but started skating around 22-23 I forgot what exact age. When I first started me and my boys goofed around and didn’t take it as seriously. When I loss those friends and it was just me and my board, that’s when I started to really skateboard. No one pushing you or motivating you. That’s when you want to really become real with the skateboard or give it up.
How to Ollie when you're 25 and haven't been active for years: Step 1: Keep your board in your trunk Step 2: Glance at the skatepark as you drive by on the way home every day Step 3: Actually go to the skate park, ride around a bit and feel that skate vibe. Get inspired by those around you. Step 4: Do what this video says. Step 5: Repeat 1-4 and watch your lost confidence build slowly.
this literally helped me ollie better in 30 minutes, i never realized how much your center of gravity and being off balance will fuck you up, thanks man!

In 1982, while competing in the Rusty Harris contest in Whittier, California, Rodney Mullen debuted an ollie on flat ground, which he had adapted from Gelfand's vertical version by combing the motions of some of his existing tricks. Here are some main reasons why people cant ollie. 1.They are not jumping off their back foot 2.They don't move their back foot to the back of the board 3.The timing is off (i found that you have to pop and then slide your foot up while your back foot is off the board) Bonus Tip: To practice without falling on the concrete, place half of your board on the ground on the concrete, and half on the grass. I've been on a cruiser for the past 5+ years because I loved to ride, but never had anyone truly teach me the basics. I've been watching yall's videos for a while now and I finally bought an actual deck. It might still have the cruiser wheels and riser pads, but I now Ollie over everything in the city. Thank you guys so much for your comprehensive tutorials and truly simplified instructions! I can't wait till more people ride!
These tips are perfect! I had pretty much given up ever learning to ollie. I bought my first board since being a teenager, slapped on the skater trainers and followed your steps. In 5 minutes I was hearing a nice pop and with 30 minutes I had taken off the skater trainers and was doing Ollies!!! Doing them while riding is my next goal but I am feeling great! Thank you!!!
Thanks again! I'm 46 and picking skating up again and these vids really help. btw, I think it should be noted that your feet are significantly closer together before the pop than after you land. (Maybe it's obvious since your foot needs to slide, but still...)
@@annechovy8936 I have not yet actually because I don’t believe I have a super high Ollie. I bet I can help you get yours higher though. What do you think you’re getting stuck on? Just watched your whole "you make it we ride is" series, i'm 30 and have never really skateboarded but you guys inspire me to get get into skateboarding, i'm considering getting a cruiser to mess around with in the city. At most i want to get some nice ollies and shuvits and possibly a kickflip every now and then. Keep up the great work, you make skating fun and accessible :)
LogicalMayhem00 I suggest to get a normal but good (I mean slightly expensive) normal wheeled board first, go into the skate shop ask around, they know their shit, I promise. if you want a cruiser board too pick up a penny board (they're cheap as usually €25-40) penny boards mightn't look too snazzy but they are great for cruising. if you get a cruise board first its hard to learn the basics off of it :'D and once you've skated for even a month or so, I advise learning how to set up your own board, the engineering of a board can teach you so much about skating
Well, i am a quadra (still young but, still a quadra) and i MUST learn Ollie techs to train my son (6 yo). With that video, i know now that i can make it and so my son will (without to much pain). So thanks to this super UPER video (Decomposed + Ollie in slow motion). THanks again!
+Braille Skateboarding UPDATE!! Just landed my first ollie yesterday thanks to this video and your others about ollies!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you Aaron!!! I posted a video of my first ollies on my channel, if would be sweet if you had time to check it out!! :D
Well i don’t know if you are still reading comments on this video since it’s so old but thank you so much for all of your awesome tutorials! I am a 38 year old dad living i Sweden, I bought my first skateboard less than 2 months ago (for travelling to work actually) and today I can ollie about 10 centimeters and I have put a hole in my first skating shoe. ;-) It’s the BEST feeling to progress every day and you are really making it easy with this and other awesome videos including SMS. So thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you! Keep rocking!!!
I landed I first Ollie yesterday and my highest one was only 2 and 1/2 inches. I was so happy and I can do it every time. This helped me Ollie 6 inches and a hope to Ollie higher. I am ten I have been skateboarding for about 5 months. For all beginner skaters don't give up and try your best.
Helped a lot. I think something that is really important is what you said during step 5. A pop is not just pushing down on the tail, it's pushing down and coming back up. Thanks Aaron.
I'm reminded of an How to Ollie article in Skateboard magazine in the 80s sometime. I read that article and within half an hour I could ollie. Once it's broken down it's simple and something understood. Luv and Peace.
Dear Aaron, I started skateboarding at 15. Back in the days with no nothing, in Rome. I wasn't good then, got borea, quit. I got the love back again this past July. I am not good at all now, at 41 years of age. But I enjoy my self so much. And I thank you for your tips! Form my standpoint, you are a very goos teacher. If you ever come to visit Italy and Rome, let me know, please. ok? Take care, dude, have a good life
+Paul Dealtry i used to skate till i was 15 then stopped.. me and my friends just picked it up again.. i am 28 now ;) so after 13 years of not skating we basically start at 0 again.. and there are millions of kids better than us.. just do it, fall, get up again and get better! :) age ist just a number my friend
+Jay TheKidd yeah I used to skate as a kid then broke my wrist and didn't dare get back on for ages then just lost interest, but now I'm eager to learn but just didn't want to look silly starting again at such a late age . When I was a kid I had so much balls I didn't care about falling of and getting hurt! Now I find a piece of wood terrifying 😂😂
So, I've been skateboarding for about 3 months now and can finally do an ollie. I have a lot of trouble doing ollies standing stills. Moving ollies are much easier for me. These helped me out, thank you!
Thank you thank you thank you for that slow-mo shot near the end! I used to have a pretty good ollie, 2 feet or so in height, but that was 30 years ago. Now I suck, but you just showed me why! In my decades off, I forgot when to pop. I've been trying to pop as I'm jumping, but your pop doesn't even begin until your legs are almost completely straightened out. That helps you not pin the tail down on the ground when it needs to be popping up. Can't wait to try fixing this...
this video helped me more than any other ollie video. helps to have examples of what happens when you mess up a step, even if the examples are a bit extreme. ty for putting this one up
I got mine in about a half hour on day 3, after figuring out shove its from Brailles tutorial...none of this occurred whole rolling though, lol, and none of it was RUclips worthy🤣🤣🤣
Gingy Gingerson well actually the term "pro", means that he is sponsored by a company on the pro team. Usually skaters dubbed "pro" have their name on merchandise and skateboards. Arron Kyro has all of these qualifications so yes.. he is a professional skateboarder.
2:16 hear hear - one of the biggest myths in skateboarding is that you need to kick your tail down with all the muscle you've got, as if you're trying to stomp a crack in the pavement. Brute force isn't going to get your ollie very high at all if you don't understand what you're trying to do. Just like scraping your front foot along the grip in itself isn't going to level out the board very well unless you learn how to 'hook' the rubber of your shoe sole on the grip far up the nose, allowing you to leverage the tail end of the board up. I mean if it were all about 'sliding' the side of your shoe along the board, wouldn't it make more sense not to have griptape, so as to make the slide as smooth as possible? No, because the resistance of rubber on sand paper is what allows you to control the board with your feet.
+Slap_Aguirre Tell yourself "I'm going to Ollie" when you go for the Ollie. Picture what the Ollie looks like in your mind and focus on that as you go for the Ollie. With the timing, it takes practice. You want to slide your foot up at an angle at the very precise moment you pop the tail of your skateboard on the concrete. As you are sliding your foot at an angle up the nose, lift your back foot up in the air. When I Ollie, I also think about bringing my knees up to my chest. But anyways, I hope this helped if you're still having trouble with ollies. You'll get it down dude!
how to ollie: jump at 7:32 set the speed to 0.25 and press space bar to stop motion the video. Look your feet position on the board before the jump, jump sequence (notice that he pops right after his jump propulsion, so there is no weight on the board) , pop(quickly push/ kick down with your rear foot without touching the ground with your foot ). When the board is in the air drag the board forward with the front foot , the rear foot just follows the board ascend speed plus a little forward motion, stop the board from moving forward with your rear foot pushing it down and backward ( shortly sliding the rear foot toward the tail, the movement should come natural when you just push down) while returning to your original position. I don't even own a skateboard :).
Best explanation ever! Thanks so much for step 4. You want to creat an upper momentum enough to keep you kinda flouting so you bring your knees up and that's what gives your ollies height. Awesome thanks Aaron!
..and for me making it run in a right way and making some ollie is enough.. because my aim is just to go around to a place where I want to go... Thank you again....
Thanks so much! This video got me from my first ollie (you can see it on my channel) to my highest ollie (also on my channel) in a short period of time! The part where it says not to pop as hard as you can helped me. Also the emphasis on pushing your foot forward while sliding helped me a lot. You really got me into skating from not even caring for skating about 2 years ago to loving skateboarding!
It happens sometimes to me, but you have to concentrate on poping hard and on the timmings. First make sure you pop well, you have to hear the sound, and the you can do the next step. If you dont pop your ollie will be worst.
Thanks to this video, I made and landed my first ollie 2 days ago!!! I felt and heard the front wheels hit the ground a little bit before the back wheels. I was so proud! It's all about the technique and not the strength. The next try I did, I landed premo, fell on my tailbone, and scraped my hands... Had to go home and wash blood of my hands, and the tailbone still hurts a bit... But I made an ollie thanks to you! (and one fourth of a kickflip) :D In fact I also bought a skateboard 3 weeks ago because of your videos, John Hill's videos and Garret Ginner's videos. Keep making awesome videos! See ya :-)
im still working on with my ollie and it's been 2 days. those who feel like giving up, Aaron himself took 6 months to ollie. let's work this out and meet at SLS one day. KEEP UP BOIS!
But... you DO NEED to jump to ollie. And a lot of ollie tutorials fail at letting you know that, yours included... Begginers try and try and try that two motions without jumping at the same time, and they don't understand why they don't leave the ground... And comparing jumping on the middle of the board with the proper ollie is nonsense. You jump with your back leg, but jump all the same.
that happened to me you need to practice on concrete, if you're scared you'll slip hold onto something near the concrete (ledge, rail, etc) then start moving (while holding onto the ledge and do an ollie) somehow I stopped doing it when I started moving
Hello Braille skateboarding and Aaron Kyro I watch all of your videos and I wish I got to skate with you guys because you guys inspire me so much and I am trying to get skateboarding made simple i fornow am watching your videos on RUclips be I will learn lot from you guys so thank you Braille skateboarding you guys are awesome Francis Thomas
I think one thing that needs to be emphasized more now with ollies is the crouch and upwards momentum caused by your push off the ground after your pop. You won't allow the ollie of the board to follow through if you don't go into the air high enough. You have to crouch to build the energy to jump, and then as your legs push you up when you're about to, you need to pop your foot on the back end, and then you'll find that you and your board are both jumping in sequence. Hope this helps :)
I would like to add some advice for the pop: Get your back foot up away from the deck. Kind of like kicking it, not pushing it to the ground. Now I actually am still practising ollies but found that step missing from a lot of tutorials and it has helped my ollies once I realised it. It is actually kind of explained in this video around 9:40 but just wanted to put this here as a lot of people don't stick around to the end
Here's another tip. Back in the 80s, when I started skateboarding, my parents got me my first setup. A couple of weeks later, I was out skating with mates when I saw this crack at the bottom of the deck. It looked like it was going to snap any moment. My step father, who knew nothing about skateboarding, decided to attach two metal rails for support. Needless to say, I was pretty bummed about it. The skateboard was heavy, and I was learning how to ollie. It was a blessing in disguise. A year later I got a new deck for my bd and it felt as light as a feather. I was able to ollie higher than most boys in town. Metal rails, that's your tip.
I always think about the ollie that the pop comes from the foot and not from the knee. The knee jumps and the foot pops. Very good tips. Something crucial I learned in this video is that when jumping Aarons head went off screen and when ollie-ing his head really didn't go up very much. So in fact you tuc in your legs more than you actually jump. It's all about that pop and timing. Several thumbs up.
Hey. Like the videos. Solid instruction. There are other things going on as well, but you are absolutely jumping. That’s why you go down before you go up. 😀🤙🏼
I dont understand why people dislike these videos, especially when its from Aaron Kyro, a sponsored skateboarder from the San Francisco Bay Area.

I SO needed to hear the part about not trying to jump! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
+Braille Skateboarding UPDATE!! Just landed my first ollie yesterday thanks to this video and your others about ollies!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you Aaron!!! I posted a video of my first ollies on my channel, if would be sweet if you had time to check it out!! :D
+Follow LeeAnne hey, I'm going to post a video in the next month about ollies, check it out. it will have great information.
Marcel Awesome! I will! I made a video of my first attempts is you want to check it out! I need a lot more practice for sure!! :D
your channel is so cool wow. check out my instagram @illuminati_c0nfirmed_333 for skate stuff
You're such a good teacher. That's just a another reason to respect you Aaron.
“Skateboarding made simple is the most detailed video I’ve ever made”
That right there is one hell of an oxymoron lmao

thanks ive been having problems with ollies thanks for the help man. :)
I could not Ollie for the longest time but once i started sliding foward more than up it helped so much
I heard the word Ollie so much it sounds strange to me now
happens to me everytime i overhearing anything

This will teach you more than school ever will.
If you ever come to visit Italy and Rome, let me know, please. ok?
Take care, dude, have a good life
I'm 23 I feel to old to learn to skate but always wanted to learn
Dude there's people in there 30s who skate. Age don't mean nothing
+MrFruitsmax yeah I guess! it's just embarrassing going to the park and their is kids way better than you 😂 I can Ollie just not whilst riding
I'm almost 25 and just bought my first board... heck Aaron is in his 30's. go for it.
I have finally made some big improvements on my rolling Ollie, I think it is getting close for me to being able to Ollie up a curb🤞🏾
This will take me forever to practice....
Oh GOD!!
btw ur awesome
Can't wait to try fixing this...
hey, does skating make your butt more toned like doing squats?
what the fuck
what the fuuuck
Wtf
+Nik Aizad yeah, of course
Why girls skate
Waitress: what would you like to order?
Aaron: I’m a professional skater from the San Francisco Bay Area
Waitress: would that be all?
This was the best, most hilarious, ridiculous tutorial ever. Haha.
I was looking for this comment to like
i’m still new to skating but i watched all your ollie videos and i’m finally getting it down a little better
Aaron you're the best, so retailer, so pedagogic!!
Immediatly, I went down to find the yard and practice some pops, thank you!!
Aaran would make such a good Skate 4 character!
+Der Panda It's confirmed dude, I was hping one of the developers might chance upon my comment. ; )
+RkadeProduction no it's not the developers went bankrupt
+Jackom 123 I heard it was different developers, unless you're talking about the most recent update of this years announcement?

Hi, I’m from 2 yrs in the future. I can confirm that there is no Skate 4....Sorry.
My back foot hurts so much from practicing how to ollie everyday XD
25% percent progress though... not giving up
***** it shouldnt hurt. maybe you're popping too hard. or you got half of your feet out of your board (?
Nacho Montico I finally got it after a month,
and yup i was popping too hard
***** great man! Keep it going
***** do it in grass i pretty much learned it like 1 week less
***** do the practice steps spend 30 minutes per step :) u should be able to do it
Aaron kyro whaat if our problem is the timing of the ollie
thanks to you I'm learning how to skate by just watching your tips and tutorials thanks man.
this video helped me more than any other ollie video. helps to have examples of what happens when you mess up a step, even if the examples are a bit extreme. ty for putting this one up
Somehow I did my first Ollie in 20 minutes..
nutelli what r u doing here
It’s been 2 months
Do you realise how lucky you are?
👁️👄👁️
I got mine in about a half hour on day 3, after figuring out shove its from Brailles tutorial...none of this occurred whole rolling though, lol, and none of it was RUclips worthy🤣🤣🤣
OMG REAL GHOST CAUGHT ON CAMERA AT 00:53 or shadow whatever....

what else... or is it? no i think you are right.
I wouldn't say you are a pro.. I'd say your a fucking beast!
Cmon man don't lick his bum
Gingy Gingerson have you seen his sponsor vids?
Theo The beast Chris Joslin is not pro yet, and this "B rate" skater is
Gingy Gingerson well actually the term "pro", means that he is sponsored by a company on the pro team. Usually skaters dubbed "pro" have their name on merchandise and skateboards.
Arron Kyro has all of these qualifications so yes.. he is a professional skateboarder.
Gingy Gingerson no u
I could watch Aaron ollie all day, they are just so clean!
Thank you!!!!!!!! best ollie tutorial ever, the difference between the jump and a pop helped me so much
Guys come down he's pro and teaching other skaters chill out Arron is probily better then all of you he's constant and that's all you need
consistant*
CreatureQuake consistent*
Well that's fucking embarrassing.
CreatureQuake sometimes I come to this video to look at this comment and laugh
@@CreatureQuakeRedo this made me laugh
Im having trouble with the timing can't quite get it any suggestions or tips to help me out ?
Same man.
If you are still having trouble, remember what you did when you had a successful one and try to do it each time.
how to ollie: jump at 7:32 set the speed to 0.25 and press space bar to stop motion the video.
I need help, I can't slide my foot when I pop in real time, my foot just comes off the board, any suggestions?
Practice tu slide on the ground first without pop
DUDE I LOVE U SSSOOO MUUCH NOT IN like a gay way BUT YOU LITTERILLY HELPED ME DO MY FIRST EVER EVER OLLY AND I LANDED IT TO
+xShoot4Killzx wooow DUDE THATS FKN INSANE HOW DID YOU DO IT ITS LIKE THE HARDEST TRICK IN HISTORY I DIDNT LEARRN IT UNTIL I WAS 8!!!! btw im now 15
"Learn the steps of an Ollie as an Ollie and learn to Ollie."
..and for me making it run in a right way and making some ollie is enough.. because my aim is just to go around to a place where I want to go...
Is it ok for your tail to not touch the ground at all
no! wtf how are you suppose to get your board off the gound
No, then you won't get enough poo
+MishraStudios **pop
+MishraStudios oh my god I'm laughing so hard I farted
It happens sometimes to me, but you have to concentrate on poping hard and on the timmings. First make sure you pop well, you have to hear the sound, and the you can do the next step. If you dont pop your ollie will be worst.
Hey braille!
I can Ollie but I feel like my foots not sliding
Thanks to this video, I made and landed my first ollie 2 days ago!!!
I felt and heard the front wheels hit the ground a little bit before the back wheels. I was so proud!
It's all about the technique and not the strength.
The next try I did, I landed premo, fell on my tailbone, and scraped my hands...
Had to go home and wash blood of my hands, and the tailbone still hurts a bit...
But I made an ollie thanks to you! (and one fourth of a kickflip) :D
In fact I also bought a skateboard 3 weeks ago because of your videos, John Hill's videos and Garret Ginner's videos.
Keep making awesome videos! See ya :-)
im still working on with my ollie and it's been 2 days. those who feel like giving up, Aaron himself took 6 months to ollie. let's work this out and meet at SLS one day. KEEP UP BOIS!
I didn’t know the tail had to hit the ground 💀
the hardest thing for me when doing an ollie is that i can only do it when not moving i struggle to do it when i am
Isaac Gardner just commit
Isaac Gardner just commit trust me I committed now my Ollie's are higher then they were.Go for it😀
But... you DO NEED to jump to ollie.
After 6 years i still watch this video !
I'll be trying this later! I love the way you teach!
when I try to do an Ollie the skateboard is going side ways
that happened to me you need to practice on concrete, if you're scared you'll slip hold onto something near the concrete (ledge, rail, etc) then start moving (while holding onto the ledge and do an ollie)
somehow I stopped doing it when I started moving
An Ollie is the hardest shit ever when you are trying to skate for the first time but ,thanks
It’s your arms, you need to keep both of it behind you or one more back, I had the same problem now I do it perfectly
Y do so many people make fun of aaron kyro? Hes an inspiring person, spit on da haters...
Please watch this at half speed, Aaron sounds so drunk lol... great video tho really helped me a lot.
I’m watching this at half speed now…I’m dying! 😂😂😂
Hope this helps :)
ive never seen anyone have these problems
Charles i have the third one
I would like to add some advice for the pop:
Get your back foot up away from the deck.
Metal rails, that's your tip.
ur literally the only person I watch to learn new tricks
Thanks so much brail! you are the one that inspired me to skate
Great compliment!
@@SkatingwithAaron thanks!
@@shicklic7362 You’re welcome! I’m no Kyro, but my name is Aaron and I love teaching others how to skate. Let me know if I can help at all!
@@SkatingwithAaron thanks so much! I do need a little help with my basic tricks :/
@@shicklic7362 No problem! What are you currently working on?
This has been a helpful reminder for an amateur growing up skateboarding , now 40something... as with anything, muscle memory 🤙🏽
Your videos are amazingly helpful, thank you so much!
Braillle Skateboarding teaching me what a jump is...thanks.
Hey. Like the videos. Solid instruction. There are other things going on as well, but you are absolutely jumping. That’s why you go down before you go up. 😀🤙🏼
Thanks for the tips!
