    Was a member of Woodhall mid 70's that's pre England golf and Bracken days. Can't believe how open it all looks, they seem to have removed a lot of gorse and silver birch trees. Filming just doesn't show how deep some of those bunkers really are. Managed to win the Stanhope Vase with a round that got me chopped to single figures and get my name on the wall at the home of England Golf before being posted away. Bragging rights, happy days. Nice video Matt, thanks.

      Course ratings offer too much emphasis on bunkering. With changing climate, wind conditions are underrated, certain coastal courses are becoming almost unplayable for mere mortals. I played Eastbourne downs for over 20 years, often 40 mph wind, holding greens almost impossible. Inland courses are less affected, yet with increased rainfall, summer run out is also disappearing. So in short, environmental issues are more important than bunkering.

    • @robertbutlin3708
      @robertbutlin3708 11 месяцев назад

      Slope rating isn’t entirely a measure of difficulty - course rating is the degree of difficulty. Slope is how much harder it is for an 18 handicap golfer versus a scratch golfer. So forced carries, bunkers tend to lead to a higher slope.

    • @Pud56
      @Pud56 11 месяцев назад

      @@robertbutlin3708 yet bunkers at local courses offer little if any hazard. Rivetted, deep bunkering penalises, sand for the sake of it doesn’t. I now play a heather lined heathland course, windy and demands accuracy. Recently had to be re-rated as the original rating ignored weather and natural conditions, now slope is up from 110 to 135, we have very few bunkers, nature is a better hazard.

      I've played this course 3 times, all at different times of the year. It is absolutely, definitely not the hardest course I've played. In fact, it's far from the hardest. If you are a relatively straight hitter, you will score well. Obviously, if you're a bit wayward off the tee, then the course will punish you, but it's a flat track with very little risk down the middle. EG clearly gaming their own system to tag their HQ as the hardest in England. Comical.

    Your putter might be doing the best she can, Woodhall Spa has been around 100+ years and the contours are natural and subtle. I and 3 other Yanks played Hotchkin in early 1990s; it has changed a lot but the greens not so much. One of our group was a bit older and needed a caddie (no carts and no trolleys allowed). He got an off duty European tour caddie whose price was 150 Pound Sterling, about $225); after negotiation my friend payed about $100, the rest of the foursome $30 each for tee shot advise and green reading, best golf money we ever spent. That caddie saved more strokes than we would have believed; you should consider that if you play Hotchkin again.

    I have noticed on the golf course, that the worst putters are the ones that rely on those little lines on the ball to line up the putt. They ALWAYS have it misaligned, and then they can't swing a putter properly anyway. Its like shooting a rifle with the rear and front site 1 inch apart. Its impossible to aim.
