I'm glad Japanese media is moving forward in showcasing less forceful attempts of affection and portraying it as erotic and romantic. The "hyper dominant versus wholly passive" narratives are still very much there and nobody verbalizes any consent still but still this is progess.

The premise this show has and how “sunny” is a lewd word and Segasaki makes everything hotter, he’s so seductive and goes for what he wants 0:46 I love the kisses and those sounds 0:52 2:35 it makes everything lewd just as Yoh thinks. After watching two episodes I think this drama can’t be judged into toxic or non-toxic. We have to watch few more episodes. Drama leads have some issues but I feel like it’s partly bcoz of Japanese manga quirks and partly linked with plot of the story. For now I don’t find this drama forceful or offensive. Manga artist moved to live with weatherman and s3x is consensual for now the problem is communication. May be lack of communication is the plot. R else both are learning in this relationship.

I have a genuine question for anyone who can answer. I know that dramas tend to be an unrealistic or amplified version of stereotypes about the type of people/culture/country they are depicting but often these stereotypes/behaviours, although inflated, have a small element of truth to them. So, my question is…..is it a thing in Japanese culture where straight guys have sex with other men and can still be seen as straight. To put in more simply, are there frequent instances where straight guys end up in situations where they are having sex with gay guys for other reasons other than because they want to have sex with guys? I’m noticing that a lot of J-BLs incorporate a straight guy having sex with a gay guy but the gay guy still saying that the straight guy is straight. Is this a thing? Is that the way it is viewed in Japan that who you have sex with does not define your sexual identity?
I don't know what to tell you, for what I know of Japanese culture I don't know such an attitude indeed homosexuality has always been condemned by the Japanese cultural tradition so even having relationships with gay men was not well seen unless it was the straight man to be the Active, in that case maybe it was more acceptable. However, I believe we are witnessing a classic Yahoi, dominant/submissive relationship here. The boy is clearly passive, he seems almost apathetic but let's think about it; he says this situation has been going on for three years... so if he really doesn't agree in some way or doesn't like it, it's impossible not to find an escape route, remember that a Sub/Dom contract can be terminated at any time, it is not binding on life unless both want it so the guy likes this thing, I think his problem is that maybe he would like the other to have feelings or at least show him some warmth / affection. Moreover, the meteorologist seems to me to be an absolutely cold type, not at all empathetic and not very expressive, maybe he will eventually melt away. So I want to say before judging this relationship and saying that the cartoonist is a passive idiot who accepts everything and why doesn't he go and look for a job and support himself instead of passively submitting to the orders of another person, who often reality is not as it appears. Perhaps he wants to stay there because, perhaps without realizing it, he is in love with his "Master"
@azzurragrasso8846 I get what you are saying. I wasn't actually shading the show or criticising Japanese culture or views towards sexuality. I just found it fascinating. I'd seen this pattern of Japanese men being able to retain the 'straight' identity as long as they are not 'romantically' attracted to men. It's led me to wonder if the Japanese view of the act of sex and sexuality as two things that are not necessary linked. I've also viewed some travel blogs on RUclips where I've heard the attitudes of some Japanese men and women who were interviewed on topics such as sex, marriage, homosexuality and I get the feeling that for example, if you were a straight Japanese male you could go into sex work and have sex with other men but apart from the stigma that comes with being a sex worker, you won't automatically be labelled as gay if you yourself don't identify as gay. Also, the women interviewed were saying that if their husbands had sex with a sex worker (male or female) they wouldn't see it as cheating or that the husband is gay. Instead they see it as something that offers their husbands release. The men said something similar. They didn't seem to bat an eyelid about men having sex with each other with 'no feelings involved'. I find it so fascinating and wondered if that was a thing in the Japanese culture (as I've been seeing patterns of this attitude in certain things), or are those people who were interviewed and these types of BLs outliers? I absolutely love My Personal Weatherman so far, by the way. I don't actually have any critiques of this show as yet. I'm enjoying seeing how it plays out. 🙂
@@danikahholdman2609 Your question is interesting. I'm not familiar enough with Japanese culture to provide an answer, but you writing that bit about how 'having sex with a sex -working is not cheating' reminded me of geishes.
Geishes were a vital part of Japanese society. Being with one in any way was not considered cheating, to my knowledge. Though those attitudes have been modernized, some of those viewpoints might still influence how sex and sex work are viewed in Japan today.
But, as I said, I don't know enough about Japanese culture to say for sure what those attitudes are and if/how they still impact today's Japanese society.
@@danikahholdman2609 Yes, I understood what you meant, mine was a general discourse on the series because I've read comments in which this relationship wasn't so understood. As for what you said, I don't know much, but if you found reliable sources then it will be like this, I'm sure that even the Japanese, no matter how particular they are, don't accept betrayal very willingly, even with a sex worker but I can't say with certainty if it's a legacy of times gone by or if it's a modern attitude. Surely, as you say, their way of thinking is bizarre and doesn't belong to me, but in the end which country you go to, which culture you find...
Your question was really thought-provoking as to how Japanese viewed themselves.
The understanding of Sexual Orientation Identity, Sexual/Romantic Attraction, and Sexual behaviour seems to differ from Western Society.
There was no clear cut moral system based on religion which we all know outlawed same-sex relations in many societies.
Same sex relations between men were common in pre-modern Japan Buddhism (dominant religion). There were never laws that prohibited same sex relations apart from a period between 1872-1882.
Maybe some of these factors influenced the 'openness' of sexual relations and didn't form stereotypes or 'labelling' ie:
Gay,Bi,Lesbian,asexual, straight etc
