The Elna Model 1 was nicknamed Grasshopper but never was officially designated that name.
As you identified the sliding lever on the right side of the bed of the sewing machine is the stitch length regulator. The machine does back tack or sew in reverse. Swing the stitch length lever to the back and the feed dogs reverse direction to back tack.
If your machine can be cleaned and properly lubricated, it will be very quiet, smooth, and fast.

Thanks for your video, Red Barn Homestead. I have had one of these Elna 1 'Grasshopper' sewing machines for many years, having bought it very cheaply when I needed a sewing machine and didn't have much money ;) I've also used it, since, when my 'new' machine couldn't cope sewing a jacket that had thick material, plus thick lining. The Elna 1 just whipped through as if the material was a piece of cotton!!! Amazing, hence I've still got it as 'back up'. Recently serviced, it's still running as well as ever.
I'm finding the history of this machine fascinating too
    Thanks again

They are built in a different era, that is for sure. They are simple, easy to maintain, before manufacturers made equipment to have a planned obsolescence.

I knows; I have a star model 31 from 1972; and it's an amazing machine overall, that really manages to make me feel appreciative of purely mechanical devices.
(granted, I do am looking at a more modern machine, as there's certain things I really want to explore💜)

The speed reducer is the black mechanism you showed at the end of the video while winding a bobbin.
The clicking sound as the machine speeds up is not normal. It sounds like something is caught in the mechanism. Something might be wedged in the bobbin case region such as a broke off needle tip.
Thank you for posting this video.

It sounds like it's rattling at high speed, you might want to get that checked out since it could be something stuck below the hook (the thing that spins)

Hi, i have inherited the same machine from my grandma who isn't hère anymore to explain it to me.
      I was wondering :
      - if it was possible to make it go backwards when sewing and if not, how do you 'lock' the line tout just sewn.
      - if there were some accessoires to plug to sew in zig zag mode or if one if the "pieds" (foot???) that go with the machine (like the one to do an 'ourlet') could allow me to do something equivalent. I think i have them all (lucky me) but struggle to understand what they're supposed to be used for.
      - are pieces like the needle or the rubber band of the wheel hard to find/replace ?
      - what should i avoid doing with it (i guess i have to oil it but with what ? + Put gasoline where there's the little bobin i guess but didn't really get it + i should remove the anti parasite component + ???)

      @@capucnechaussonpassion14 Salut Capucine and congratulations:
      1. You can sew in reverse by moving the lever to the right all the way back
      2. Search for "low shank zigzag foot" and you will find a zigzag accessory
      3. Parts are easy to find. It uses standard needles available anywhere. There is a nice gentleman from Switzerland who sells new belts on Etsy
      4. Kerosene/paraffin for the hook, sewing machine oil everywhere else - don't over-oil it. You will hear a squeaking sound if it needs oil. Just a drop and then run it for 10 seconds, no need to remove any parts

@@joshfrank5739 I also have 'Grasshopper' :) I'm interested in how this machine will do zig-zag stitching when it only has a 'static' needle position and not 'swing' needle ability, please? I would love it if this machine could do more than straight stitch.
Thanks for mentioning how to 'backstitch'. I didn't know this ;)

Don't know if it makes sense, sorry English isn't my frist language but I want to share this info because rear point is really important in sewing

Hello. Nice questions. We’re not sure if it can do a back stitch, but we’ll look into it on our next video. We’re not sure on what accessories ended up being available for the grasshopper over the years, we only have one, you may need to do some digging on the internet for that answer. Needles are generic, the belt, given you can adjust it, should have a similar modern replacement. They recommend using kerosene as a lubricant, but honestly, a light machine oil for electric motors should do the trick.

Nicer machines? Okay, she can only do straight stitch and she is not really strong (the 230V models usually have 35 or 40 watts), but a clean and well adjusted Elna 1 works very silent and sews a very, very beautiful stitch. If I would not struggle with the knee operating (I'm used to my Berninas which have knee lever to lift the presser foot) I'd have a Grasshopper especially for hemming.
Originally the Elna1 comed with two bottles (brown and black) for oil and petrol(*), which can be stored in the round support lashes under the free arm table. Elna did that because "sewing machine oil" (in a quality as we know it today) didn't exist back then: The commercial oils had a too high viscosity, so they recommended lubing the hook with petrol (*). Today's sewing machine oil is suitable also for the hook of the Elna 1. There is no reason (except olfactory nostalgia) to lube a grasshopper's hook with stinky petrol.
(* to clarify: "Petrol" or "Petroleum" in german is the word for lamp oil, not for gasoline or diesel.)

It shouldn't be that noisy. It needs lubrication and definitely use kerosene in the bobbin area as advised. It makes a big difference in how the machine runs. You can use nearly odorless lamp fuel; it is refined kerosene.

Get a hold of White Sewing Center for Elna parts. They also specialize in Elna service. I just finished sending my order in for some Elna Supermatic parts. Their ordering process is a bit outdated but they are hands down the most trusted people for quality antique Elna parts. There's lots of junky cheaply made parts out there and they will not sell that garbage. Whites is the only place to I know to trust for quality antique Elna parts.
