I'm laughing a lot because the solution was so easy lmao. Just hold your phone farther from your face and zoom. Things look 10 times better. Also, zoom gets better base resolution than cropping. Thanks dude.
I love how creative hobby’s have so much in common when it comes to execution. I am a music producer student and I would compare it like this: to get a good sound you need to know what microphone works for different instruments, the same as you need different lenses and cameras to capture different moments. After that comes the quality of the space around you, in music it’s about acoustics and how the sound bounces on the walls and objects, same as you need to think about lighting and I would assume other things as well.
I like the way you put it! Fortunately for a lot of us smartphones have gotten so good that they equalize people in terms of what they can shoot/film. Leaving the rest to the imagination, skill, and execution.
Digital zoom is theoretically better than cropping later. Due to computational photography, in theory, the phone is doing more work to make the zoomed in photo look good with what's in the previewer. As opposed to taking a base resolution photo and cropping later, the computational photography was optimized for the full shot, not for the zoomed in shot.
@@m.m4982 Exposure metering for an entire frame versus a small cropped portion would definitely yield different results in compositions with high dynamic range. He has a valid point. The camera will meter against the subject rather than extraneous objects creating conflicting lighting data in the background.
@@Levi1440p in theory sounds nice, but the technology is not mature enough. Seeing actual sample images of the new Google Pixel is what turned me away from buying it. There are AI introduced artifacts in the photos, that have no reasonable explanation, thus rendering the image(s) useless / failed.
I wasn't expecting to break down and cry right in the morning watching a video about taking better selfies but life takes us to unexpected places. Thank you for this video. Subscribed!
Dude i JUST watched your other video on focal length!! It popped up on my recommended and i was interested so i watched… then i realized the video was over a year old and there was no follow up but then i hopped on to your channel and this vid was JUST uploaded. Nice
I LOVE THIS VIDEO! ❤ Not only did you provide useful tips for better selfies, but you MADE MY DAY with your encouragement to love and appreciate myself. I suffer with body image issues and your words of wisdom reminded me that the people around me will remember me for the energy I bring and the kindness I share. 😊 THANK YOU! 🙏🏼
Man, you've blown my mind with both this and the earlier video. I did an experiment and was quite shocked at how different my face looked in the two different photos. Like different people. Thanks
So in the end you didn't actually tell us how to take a better selfie, I wish you said that at the beginning not the end. It took a frustratingly long time to get to that point.
Aww. I love how you moved from technique to heartfelt. It was a nice and needed message in a world where we worry so much about how we look and how that affects whether or not people are receptive to us. Great reminder to be who we are, love ourselves and that people will be more affected by our personality and how they felt in our presence than how we look. Thanks!
Thank you very much for the informative and motivational content. I had a lot of "by-proxy" issues with my image (i.e. family members literally praying me to remove pictures of myself from social networks as they were looking "awful and distorted" - btw they were just average-looking, un-photoshopped selfies) and after many years I am now starting to befriend the camera. It's not easy and on some days I just feel meh, but I realized three fundamental points: 1. I am prettier than I had been trained to think, 2. I don't have to be pretty 100% of the time, and 3. I have the exact same right to exist whether I am or not.
@@JonBear Thanks!!! (As a side note I just want to clarify that I have a loving family, it's just that sometimes, you know, our loved ones can get anxious and apprehensive for the most inconsequential reasons 😊)
Nice. My Google Pixel 6 Pro has a separate 4x zoom lens which is about 100mm. It's a bit of a jump from 1x (24mm) and there's nothing in between unless you digitally zoom but I don't really like that (even though there's a 2x option, it's just using the 1x lens and zoomed in). I prefer 85mm lenses on mirrorless/DSLRs so I hope phone cameras would start adding that focal length in the future.
@@JonBear I just tried it and started to love myself again! 😉 Seriously, selfies look so much better with it. (Very) unfortunately, you can't use voice commands to tell the camera to take a picture using 4x optical zoom, though, and there is no shutter voice command like the Samsungs apparently have. So you can only use the timer and volume-key trigger to make this (remotely) convenient to use for selfies.
Your first video on this topic just happened to be on my list, and although I'm not really big on taking selfies, I thought it wouldn't hurt to get some good advice on how to make the ones I take look better. I felt that you put out some excellent information about taking good photos, but I thought, "what about taking selfies with your cellphone?" And, guess what, this video was just waiting for me to watch on the date you uploaded! What a coincidence for me! So, thank you! 👍🏽💯
Depends on the phone, but a lot of phones downscale the output image, so zooming before taking the picture produces a clearer, higher res image than cropping in post. E.g. my phone has a 108 MP sensor, but outputs 12 MP images, so I get way more detail when I zoom in first.
It's a good question Lara. I'd say tight lenses are more flattering for faces regardless of masculine or feminine. But I have had an instance where I take a picture of my wife with a really tight shot and we both agreed that the jawline became far too pronounced. So finding the happy medium becomes more important.
Great video but there are some thing I should add First of all it's better to zoom instead of cropping because of all the computational stuff will get better results if you zoom both detail and color wise And here are some focal length numbers for some phones telephoto sensors on top of my head Iphone 12 pro and older 54mm Iphone 12PM 68mm 13 and 14 pro series 81mm S10 and older 50mm(if they have telephoto) S20 ultra 103mm S21 and s22 ultra have two telephotos one is 81 one is 230 Pixel 4 50mm pixel 5 doesn't have any Pixel 6 doesn't have and 6 pro has 103mm

Dear, Jon, firstly, Takk fyrir, for your absolutely most fascinating recordings, from your excellent excursions into the amazing nature and landscape of astonishing Iceland! I genuinely love your homeland and visited Ísland in July 1992, long before the mass-tourism is filling your amazing country! Anyhow, I so much enjoy the facts your father is sharing with us in your beautiful and very very interesting videos, and of course, you are a wonderful person to listen to, and I also love your generosity to share the secrets from your great photographic work! Wishing you, Jon, your spouse, your father, and your whole family all the blessings with much joy and well-being in every aspect! Óska þér velfarnaðar! Greetings from Sweden!
I'm speechless! Thank you so much for the most wonderful comment. I really appreciate you taking the time to share. I hope you get the chance to visit Iceland again! It's true that mass tourism has had a huge impact but there are still amazing adventures to be had in Iceland especially the Highlands ❤️ I wish you and your family all the best! I was born in Sweden so it has a special place in my heart
This reminds me of the time when phones used to have 2 front cameras with different focal lengths. One for narrow shots and another for wide. I think phone manufacturers should go back to that. Instead of adding macro and wide lenses in the back, adding an extra lens in the front is what more users would prefer (I think).
The lighting makes your face look warped, it's like the left and right side of your face are two different people. If this is pure daylight I suggest a reflector of sorts to soften the contours of the darker side.
