I was very lucky to see David Bowie live several times. A true legend! His stage presence was incredible. You couldn't escape his charisma. His death in 2016 was a real shock!
The song is about two lovers meeting at the Berlin Wall. The Berlin Wall was a huge wall that divided the city of Berlin in half, with two opposing sides. Guards patrolled the Wall to keep people from escaping to the other side. The Wall was demolished in 1990.
David Bowie lived in Berlin for a short while because he wanted to write an album regarding the political troubles that western and eastern Germans faced which resulted in the album and hit single Heroes. There are not that many true artists that would go to those lengths for their music, but that is one reason he was an artist. I personally have listened to Bowie since 1979 when I heard Fashion on the radio aged 11 and followed Bowie's music ever since. It was fantastic to see your reaction to Heroes. Another fantastic song for you if not already heard, Young Americans. Take care.
David Bowie was an English singer-songwriter & actor. He constantly reinvented himself to stay current over nearly 5 decades. His first big hit was "Space Oddity" in 1969. He has had a lot of great songs including "Ziggy Stardust", "Starman", "Rebel Rebel", "Young Americans", "Changes", "Fame", "Golden Years", "Ashes To Ashes", "Under Pressure", Let's Dance", "Modern Love", "China Girl" etc.
@@rickb.4168 In 1969, Space Oddity reached the top 5 in the United Kingdom, the top 8 in the Netherlands, the top 13 in Ireland, and entered several charts, but I don't remember the position right now.

He was a one off.David Bowie performing Heroes, live in Berlin. This performance of "Heroes" was performed in 2002 during Bowie's concert tour .This is a great version. If you have the time.
I grew up with David Bowie, at time of is early music it was all centred around the moon landings and as kids growing up he was like an alien to us. Songs like Space Oddity, Starman, Life on Mars and Ziggy Stardust had me mesmerised. As an 11 year old I thought he was from out of space, my old mans fault rest his soul.
While not a fan of this song i am a big fan of Bowie and the albums Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust should be in everyone's record collection...Artists like Bowie only come along every so often ....peace...
Please react to more David Bowie. I saw him 3 times in concert and his voice is the greatest. Good songs to react to are: Space Oddity, No Control, Life on Mars and Wild is the Wind.

Nearly but Space Oddity wasn’t a hit in 1969. It was re-released in the ‘70’s and then it did well.
@@rickb.4168 It was a hit in the UK, it got to number 5 in the UK charts in 1969.

I’m a fan of Bowie and the Velvet Underground; it’s always seemed obvious to me that this song had VU influences stamped all over it.
