According to what I’ve heard, when the Americans sank the Yamato’s sister ship Musashi the previous October, US pilots were astounded at the amount of damage Musashi took before she sank. The same must have been true for the Yamato. Oh, and as she sank, the Yamato’s forward magazine (ammo storage area) exploded with a fireball that was so huge that it could be seen from the southernmost islands of mainland Japan, some 200km. away.
Musasi was almost unarmed when they attacked it.. was going to reconstruct it as an air carrier but never made it.. Yamato was fully operated when they attacked.. unfortunately for all battleships their era was ended before even the WWII began, because planes was small fast and deadly for their old anti air crafts that was human operated... yamato had the bigger guns in any way possible but still was not enough.
It's like as if the Yamato's crew made one second of their hellhole of a battle worth it, fighting even if their fellow crew members are injured or dead and bombs falling down on the ship, They really are metal machines and had metal balls.

The main reason for the Fall of the Yamato was lack of protection on the AA mounts, actually, their AA crews were shot out before anything real could be done. The AA mounts may not have been that good themselves, but they had a LOT of them, and if the crews had survived, The Yamato may have survived that assault.
The Yamato might actually have fared quite a bit better, except when the fighters escorting the dive bombers and torpedo planes arrived to battle Zeros, they found zero Zeros (pardon the pun). So they decided the next best way to protect their charges was to intensively strafe the lightly armored AA guns on the Yamato, which they did with terrible efficiency. This music video is a pretty darn accurate depiction of the fate of most of the AA crews. It does, however, credit the gunners with more kills than they ever achieved. Only 10 planes were lost attacking Yamato, and 7 of those were blown out of the sky when Yamato's magazines went up as she sank. That means the AA defense only accounted for 3 attacking planes.

The Yamato, though arguably the greatest battleship, and a suicidally devoted crew, would not have lasted long after this battle, even if it had survived. The Japanese Empire was devastatingly short of fuel, and would have had to beach or scuttle it shortly thereafter.
That's what they intended on doing in its last sortie, it was to beach itself on Okinawa and serve as a coastal fort, firing until completely destroyed. It never got the chance.

The Yamato, though arguably the greatest battleship, and a suicidally devoted crew, would not have lasted long after this battle, even if it had survived. The Japanese Empire was devastatingly short of fuel, and would have had to beach or scuttle it shortly thereafter.
That's what they intended on doing in its last sortie, it was to beach itself on Okinawa and serve as a coastal fort, firing until completely destroyed. It never got the chance.
Weren't they using unrefined oil as fuel which was way more explosive?

Thank the lunatics on the USS Johnston DD-557 for chasing yamato away. After that the Philippines were safe from it, it's final destinations were either the bottom of the ocean or Okinawa, it would never again threaten anyone after the battle off Samar.

There were plans to build a battleship bigger than the Yamato-class called the Super-Yamato class. It would be 3 times bigger with 6 triple-barreled 20 inch guns plus other smaller of guns. The Yamato only have 3 triple-barreled 18 inch guns plus other smaller guns. 2 ships were designed but they were scrapped when the navy focused on building aircraft carriers and torpedo destroyers.
