Roald Amundsen’s South Pole Expedition 1910-1912 : Norwegian version
Fascinating, and sometimes funny, footage from a journey that captured the world's imagination. Fram, ready for the epic journey ahead, is shown by Akershus fort in Oslo. Then the dogs are brought aboard. Southward bound, the crew gets its first glimpse of drift ice. They enter the Ross Sea, observe whales in the Bay of Whales, and arrive at the ice shelf. Playful penguins give a show for the camera, before Knut Sundbeck's famous meeting with an emperor penguin, and a group of cheeky dogs introduce themselves to an understandably surly seal. At base camp Framheim, the dogs are prepared for the final push toward the South Pole. The sleds set forth, a photograph of the historic moment is shown, and the sleds return. Lastly, preparations are made for the long trip home.
This is probably a version of the film material from Roald Amundsen’s South Pole expedition which was shown in cinemas in Norway.”

This film is fascinating from the point of view of someone who first visited the Fram in Oslo in 1973, and has read widely on the subject in the intervening more than forty years. I always hoped to see some cine film of the actual voyage to the South, and here it is.
    Thanks.

I too was fascinated by this story as a kid, couldn't get to Antarctica so spend 3 months in Greenland when they had ice. Greeting from Australia.

Rather odd feeling this, watching a society now completely erased from humanity, an entire civilisation that no longer exists - a mere hundred years ago and the whole worlds population and their culture are now lost, gone forever. They seem so far removed considering that my grandparents weren't even born... a paradox this... being a mere century ago that might as well be a thousand years. So precious, such insights into the past. As for the courage and determination of such individuals, you are left with a sense of awe and admiration. Thanks.

Mark Taylor Which culture are you referring to? There has never lived any natural people on the South Pole. Norwegian whalers was around.. And Inuit still live quite well above the Northern polar circle. You statement is nonsense ;) The world actually still goes on, despite your failing knowledge

Mark Talbot Lots of ignorant people share there shortsighted views & observations on complex topics.. Americans with Disney & Hollywood based "insight" is a major annoyance..
      All the best & skål

If you read my original post in the context it was written and without that which you nominated you might yet garner that what I referred to was the world population in general and not any specific race or point of geographic region in particular. Hope that helps you to some extent. Ciao.

Mark Talbot You are expressing your feelings about lost cultures in general, and not specific according to the video?
Not to press any further, except the North American Indian I don't recall any cultures wiped out in the Northern Hemisphere?

Amundsen wasn't the first to reach the Pole. The dogs were.
