  • What was it like to cross a continent in a covered wagon?
"Emigrant Road" follows the pioneer trail 2,000 miles across the American West from Independence, Missouri to the Willamette Falls near Portland, Oregon, features the annual wagon train river ford reenactment at Three Island Crossing, Idaho, and takes an unprecedented close-up look at the historic, original paintings by William Henry Jackson at Scotts Bluff, Nebraska. Comparing what the pioneers saw then to those same views today, award-winning filmmaker James R. Tompkins guides us through the ages, sharing the personal trail diaries of many of those who made the treacherous journey.
"Emigrant Road" was one of the first digital Travel Adventure Cinema shows (also known as Travelogues), evolving from a 100-year-old art form that has now all but disappeared from the American cultural landscape. It was presented live (narrated from the stage) at performing arts venues, college theaters, high school auditoriums, and community centers all over the United States between 1997 and 2007. Performances included Carnegie Music Hall, the National Geographic Society, the SunDome, and the Universities of Utah, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, and many others, usually as a part of a season of travel film lectures presented by local organizations.
Join us as we journey along the Emigrant Road on an Oregon Trail adventure!

I used to visit Independence Rock when I lived in Casper, Wyoming. What an interesting monument to all the brave, adventurous pioneers who crossed this country looking for a better life. Thanks so much for bringing their journey to life.

One of the few, historical, accounts of the early history of the settlement of the USA that I have enjoyed. A great presenter and easy to listen to. This for me has been a five star plus presentation. Thank you so very much. Andy from New Zealand.

Super soothing voice of narration as we see footage from the sights along the Oregon Trail. Hearing the narrator read from the journals of the pioneers helps to create a sense of the atmosphere of living at such a time. This is a wonderful resource and much appreciated!

Really, with all the hardships, those brave pioneer families were excited and had wonderful experiences. Some of the pioneer journals are full of joy, accomplishment, family trials as well as beautiful times.

I really enjoyed this film. James, I had the pleasure of meeting you last Saturday at the Ei mixer at Wonderland Lisboa. Before moving to Portugal, we were fortunate to travel the US in our RV, and saw many of the places along the Oregon Trail. With your film, you have suceeded in bringing history to life. The music was very good also. I'm looking forward to watching more of your production soon. Hope to see you again at other expat functions. Cheers

disappointed my family is not mentioned "Kelsey" Nancy Kelsey was a member of the Bartleson-Bidwell Party and reported to be the first white woman to travel overland from Missouri. Wife of Benjamin Kelsey and sometimes referred to as the Betsy Ross of California for her role in creation of the original bear flag.

44:40 - about Pronghorns, the fastest land animal on the western hemisphere, not really an Antelope but a Giraffoidea and related to the Giraffe and Okapi. Once roaming the plains and mountain valleys, perhaps as many as 50 million, but just like the Bison, the Beaver and several other wildlife species hunted and deprivated to near extinction by the Euro Americans. By 1920 there were some 13.000 left.

The sad part of this video is at 55.00 when your looking at a beautiful crystal clear spring and then here comes a motor boat in 4 foot of water, with a dog jumping off, and the city lady says, They, the dogs. Love chasing the Marmots. So in other words, we dont care about disturbing nature, our dogs love chasing wild animals. So sad, and So Pathectic what people have become today. I will be so happy not to be living that many more years for then I will not see this distruction continue.

Don't worry about the marmots, they get good at not getting caught by predators, from being chased by coyotes, etc.

    Very Nice presentation.
But don’t forget the Federal Government encouraged the destruction of the vast buffalo herds to help defeat the native people. Most narratives skip over this little detail.
