    I bought the manta 24 and decided to do a 5 day adventure in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest on it, all over nights and no vehicle, just my tent strapped onto the outside... I wanted to go for a week out there but nearly ran out of food, and well, overpacked to begin with. It worked great for testing this bag out though. I intend to try a hammock instead of tent during the summer and make that week happen! Cheers!

    This review helped me decide on buying this pack. I had originally purchased a Kestrel 38 a couple months ago (your review helped me buy that as well). I took that on a handful of day hikes. I found the Kestrel 38 to be kind of an awkward size. It felt obnoxiously large for a day hike, and perhaps a too small for an overnight backpacking adventure - depending on how small/light you pack. I also found it was causing me neck pain. It always felt like it was pushing my head down and forward slightly, so I ended up selling it. I just purchased this Manta 24, and it seems perfect for day hikes. It's still a pretty large pack with a surprising amount of space. I'll definitely be able to get everything I need in it, and still have room leftover. It's super comfortable. It came with a 2.5L hydration bladder, and has it's own dedicated sleeve, and a rain cover. The hip belt pockets fit my phone. (All things I look for in a pack). This was a perfect buy. It's also built very ruggedly, much like the Kestrel series. Definitely a lot beefier construction than the smaller/lighter packs, such as the Talon series and Daylight/Hikelight series.

    • @basecampchris

    So maybe you can help answer a question. The Manta 24 vs I guess the olde Manta 28 AG which you can still get. Which would you get. Do you know why they discontinued the 28 AG. What is better about the 24? Thank you.

    • @basecampchris
      @basecampchris  5 лет назад +1

      the Manta 28 has a different outside back zippered pocket that is in an arc near the top the 24 has a side zippered compartment on the back. The 28 would be larger ...guessing they saw that 24 was a more standard size so they possibly discontinued for that reason. Thanks for watching.

    • @basecampchris

      Hi CB, It looks like the magnetic bite valve can be replaced on the hydration...but the sternum strap magnet is built into the attachment on the pack...so cannot be removed. Might consider another pack....Stratos 24 is comparable and no magnets.

    • @basecampchris
      @basecampchris  5 лет назад

      It's the integrated mesh back panel that the shoulder straps attach to. It provides great air space between the pack and your back. Anti Gravity sounds like a NASA term... " Houston we are now experiencing Anti-Gravity!"...It's definitely a good thing. My Manta is my go to day pack...I also have a Atmos 65 same green color...Basically it's a super beefed up Manta!!

    I agree on investing in a good pack and good shoes. My doctor told me two things to never go cheap on. Good comfortable shoes because your on your feet so much and a good mattress because you’re in it for 8 hours a day and a good nights sleep is important for health.

    • @basecampchris
      @basecampchris  5 лет назад

      Thank you Oscar! Interesting yes it looks just like a CNOC product... If the water bladder is "Leak Proof" that will be a huge....nothing worse than losing your water and get soaked! :( "Keep Hiking!"

    • @oscarhuynh8066
      @oscarhuynh8066 5 лет назад

      I don’t mind using water bladders for day hikes because if it malfunctions or leaks, I’ll be at home the same day. For multi-day backpacking, I still use smart water bottles. They don’t usually leak, and the bottles are on the outside of the pack so gear doesn’t potentially get soaked if they do leak. Plus, they’re lighter too.

      You may want to go to your local REI store and compare side by side...I have / use the 24 it's plenty big for day hikes and gives me plenty of options. 34 pack is considered for shorter over-nighter trips. ( so feels big for day trips )

    • @Built_By_Bacon

      Base Camp Chris I went with the 34! I understand it’s a little on the big side for single days, but I have a (very) small camelback I decided I can use on the short treks, and if for the longer days I’ll have the 34! Plus I can do overnights with it! It’s definitely the largest day pack I’ve ever owned but cinching it down isn’t so bad :)

      Mark. Same here. I wish they made a size in between. 10ltrs is a big jump! I want to take this bag as carry on , not for luggage but for my personal items and to use on day hikes once I've reached my destination. Any thoughts size wise. Would a 34ltr fit under the seat of an airplane? If not I think I might go for the osprey escapist 32. An overlooked hike/commuter bag.

    • @basecampchris
      @basecampchris  5 лет назад

      if you go online the airlines will post the size restrictions for carry on. They do vary somewhat ...I doubt the 34 would fit especially with the rigid, wire suspension system ( Manta 34 Product Dimensions: 14 x 14 x 22 inches ; 3.09 pounds )...the Escapist could be a good bet...check the size and see though.
