Allan Holdsworth was shear genius on guitar. His phrasing and sound were incredible. A true virtuoso. Holdsworth and Ponty playing together was Godlike.
Hi Jamie, you are also great guitarist...i remember you very well and your "leopard "Ibanez GUITAR & randall amp!we speak at Music Fair @Italy,Pesaro 1992
JLP helped introduce Allan to the world in 1977 with 'Enigmatic Ocean', still a jazz fusion masterpiece. That was after Allan's 'Velvet Darkness' album which went largely un-noticed but before he played with UK or Bill Bruford. As Steve Vai once said, people will still be talking about Allan Holdsworth 100 years from now, he was that good. Rest in peace.
I think he'd already been well introduced to the world by 1977. By then he'd played with Nucleus, Soft Machine, Tony William's Lifetime and Pierre Moerlen's Gong. His contribution to all them was exemplary, particularly Soft Machine's Bundles. Most, if not all of them, are on RUclips.
In a month (4/15), it would be 5 years since Allan left us and joined his next band this time in heaven! I met his twice at Yoshi', Oakland, CA. He was setting up his gears before the show. When I said hello to the master shyly, he replied kindly 'oh hello!' with BIG SMILE AND HIS BIG EYES! I saw Mr. Ponty too at the same place. Wonderful show! My favorite collaboration of them is Nostalgia (Individual Choice). Thank you masters for wonderful music and sweet memories!
It's certainly a GREAT Allan solo! I love the entire track so much. It's very pop, but check out Allan's two solos here... not a well known track I think.. I love hearing Allan out of his normal context: ruclips.net/video/27kYosWNs-8/видео.html

Shocking to hear of Allan's death. He was the greatest part of my "musical life" for over 40 years, starting with the soft machine. For me he will always be the greatest guitarist ever. RIP Allan Holdsworth.
Yeah. Brings back memories from the "Enigmatic Ocean" and "Individual Choice" days. It wouldn't hurt Allan to record more in somewhat more prog-rock contexts like he did in the 1970's.
there will be only one allan holdsworth. jean luc is great, but allan is outstanding. his solo is not of this earh. iI w will take decades to discover such talent again. RIP Allan .
RIP maestro Allan Holdsworth... Thank you for the otherworldly, crystalline chords and the beautifully phrased, cascading legato solo lines, that revealed scale sources from unseen worlds...

so so sad, allan holdsworth is no longer among us. the absolute king of guitar. My favorite since the tony Williams lifetime. his improvising is not of this earth. RIP allan holdsworth.
RIP Allan; for me his solos w/Ponty were the soundtrack of my 1970s, those LPs played until the grooves worn flat. So sad to hear the news just now, very very sad but happy he was on this planet awhile.
I don't think Allan was a human in guitar...he was out of normal ....something like Devine an AVATAR of guitar in this planet...no body could thing that kind of notes speed sweetniess incredible .......
the musicianship and this composition show has profoundly these musicians deeply LOVE music... Jean-Luc Ponty and Allan Holdsworth in our hearts forever !!!!!
I saw both Jean-Luc and Allan live many, many times, and was fortunate to have met both in person. Wish I could have seen them play together! I actually got to ask Jean-Luc if he would ever again collaborate with Allan, and he wasn't sure it would ever happen since he was living back in France by then. Allan passed away in my city, not far from where I live, so it hit even harder for us locally. Both provided sound tracks to my life...some of the greatest music in my world.
These are so inspiring to me..Awesome Melodies. Allan H really took this solo to a new Level...turned the Solo into a song itself full of Vibrant Textures and Melodic Flavor...Thanks for sharing this Song...
Jeez. Jean luc has been my top musicians since i was a kid. Still love all his work. My father was a drummer and our household bands were UK, Bruford, JLP, King Crimson, Camel, Steely Dan, Corea, Yes etc. Hundreds of vinyls for search for. Now years go by and i am going nowhere.
Mr Pastman - you yourself are a musical genius! Capable of catching lightning in a bottle - I've seen it! As for Allan - this may be one of his best solo's. There are at least 8-9 that make me listen 12 times each time listen - this is one of those. Honestly - this makes me sob. How could any human assemble this fluidity? It is true wizardry. So grateful JLP utilized him - as he sounds at his best with him - imho.
yes, Allan was a singular force in music. He laid the tracks for the proto shredders of our times. This Piece & solo are just beautiful. Probably in 100 years he will be hailed as a master. Allan used to play the violin for a few years in the seventies. Should he continued to play the violin he might have rival Jean Luc's position as the top Jazz violinist in the world.
Jikke Dobbelaar That is indeed hilarious. I've heard similar. What's so weird of course is that his playing is just freaking overflowing with emotion in each perfect note.
That's just your taste. I used to work with a hard-rock/goth guitar player that called John Abercrombie's great track "Timeless" from the early 1970's exactly that: 'elevator music' & all Pat Metheny Group recordings 'the worst kind of elevator muzak.' Ben Monder's "Oceana" album is a great one but very few people who don't appreciate the Allan Holdsworth of "Enigmatic Ocean" or "I.O.U." at the very least, are likely to even last for 10 minutes listening to something as adventurous as Monder.
Allan Holdsworth was shear genius on guitar. His phrasing and sound were incredible. A true virtuoso. Holdsworth and Ponty playing together was Godlike.

Scott is great for sure and a pioneer in his own right, but he is very different to Allan, and I would not say he is predominantly a legato stylist.
