these guys and girls COOK.....so clean and authentic...great solos, wonderful choices of songs....I love the harmonic trios they had in the 20s and 30s, and the trio here NAILS IT! every time they sing! Lovely!
Fanstasticky plus pohadkovy A truly wonderful performance at this year's Edinburgh jazz festival. Loved every minute and hope you will be back next year. All the best guys!
Tough competition. What put Bratislava over the edge is Bartos, the trumpet player. Without him, Giordano might have him beat. Of course, if Barbara Rosene sang with the Nighthawks, that would put them on top, IMO.
I love Havelka -- amazing entertainer and the Melody Makers are superb. When Bartos plays for them, they are a virtual tie. Havelka tends to get more into the 1940's, though, and Bratislava and Giordano are more 20's and 30's -- my preferred era (although I do enjoy the 40's, just not quite as much). I ha ve several of his CDs and am on the lookout -- hard to get them in the states, and difficult to order from the Czech website (I have tried). I love the three I have. Quite the dancer and showman, too.
Jen pro příklad milá mladá slečno, zkuste si poslechnout verzi úžasné písně Too Marvellous For Words v původním pěveckém podání Sama Browna ruclips.net/video/wK_LsNMCSmU/видео.html a pak si poslechněte pana Kuriľáka. ruclips.net/video/9RCudJJgxLs/видео.html Nevím jak Vy, ale já mám dojem že předvádí parodii nejen zpěvu, ale i parodii angličtiny.
A ak by boli taki hrozni, pan Bartos by ich tam urcite nemal. 🙂 Skuste si vypocut ich najnovsie CD...
I agree with Edward Vasicek, but don't ignore the contribution that Pavel K. made with the Original Prague Syncopators which helped pave the way for Havelka. Under Pavel's leadership that band was historically accurate and his trumpet a legacy in the cornet style of Beiderbecke. Any of these euro bands could blow rings around Giordano. I'm so glad to see both Havelka with his Melody Makers and the Hot Serenaders active again in new incarnations. - Jazz Researcher/Historian, Tim Morgereth
Please keep in mind that I'm referring to the OPS under the late Pavel K. and the older BHS. Don't get me wrong, Vince's Nighthawks are a wonderful organization and always have been, but it too has suffered the quality of musicianship due to attrition over the years. Look at it like comparing Glenn Miller under his own leadership and the ghost band of today. You don't have the superior musicianship of yesteryear. The euro bands under the old iron curtain were deeply influenced by the older recordings they had access to, so their styles developed in that genre and the solos and styles reflect that. It's historical accuracy. A wonderful band of the golden age was Teddy Stauffer and his Teddies. They emulated our U.S. styles. When I listen to 20's music, I like to hear hints of Bix and Tram, Red, Satch and others the players were trying to emulate in the styles they played, double/triple/slap tongueing, choke cymbals, etc. I see this in the euro bands and in the arrangements more than Vince, that's all. Vince is the best U.S., I agree.

Jé! To je Juraj Bartoš! 3:00
