    It’s a miracle this unit is still around. It was sold for scrap along with all its siblings in the late 60s, and IIRC was in the scrap yard for a short period until the IRM purchased it.

      I maybe mistaken but if I recall only the CZ had Zephyretttes. I rode 1 and 10 a lot as I worked for the" Q" in the early to mid 60' s in passenger traffic. God I loved the"Q". When Menk came in I left as I saw what he would end up doing. He took 6 great roads and created 1 mediocre one.
      😥 sad.

    I’m mostly a steam locomotive guy and not a big fan of the diesel locomotives. I will admit this is one classy train! It’s a shame we can’t go back to the golden age of train travel.

      Yeah. I will admit, the long distance Amtrak trains, specifically the overnights, look pretty decent. Obviously, they don’t hold a candle to the old days, but they still have some perks. (Especially the routes themselves. You can’t beat scenery when traveling by rail.)

      This is a different Zephyr than the one you saw at the Science and industry. Dad was a freight conductor on the CB&Q and we lived in Galesburg. It was great to get passes and I spent a lot of time on the California Zephyr going up to Chicago or all the way out to Oakland. I remember how classy the dinning cars were in the past. In the past few years I have used the AMTRAK California Zephyr for round trips between here in UT and CA. The dining experience today is in booths and all the class is gone.

    I grew up in Burlington, IA. The Nebraska Zephyr came through Burlington in the late afternoon. I remember watching it pass often. Visiting family friends in Fairfield, IA on New Years Eve in 1967, I asked if I could ride the Zephyr to Burlington and be picked up at the station. My wish was granted.
    The equipment was tired, shop worn and ready to be retired. From the video, what a magnificent job of restoration. Those responsible are to be congratulated for their work.

    I used to see these Burlington Zephyrs every day and all day, while hanging around the old Galesburg station all through the 60's and into the 70's. Trains have never been so beautiful as they were then with all the shine. While they were stopped for passengers I would stand next to the Locomotive to listen to it idle and feel it vibrate my clothes with the sound. The Galesburg station has no personality at all now with all the concrete and after tearing down the old station, so sad. The first and only time I got to ride on the train was on July 5th, 1974, going to ChiTown to begin my military career. Now in NC and far from any tracks, this video is a treasure. When walking through the cars and Percy began to play, all I could say was "Thank You God, Thank You God..." I can't begin to describe the memories and feelings flooding over me. Thank you so much for recording this for us. That's a very special time and place for me. And that Hudson, My Dad used to Fire on it as a young man until he left for WW2. God bless...

    Great video. It sure bought back memories for me as I started as an operator in 1967 at 38th street tower in Denver. We were running the Denver Zepher and the California Zepher back in those days. It was part of my job to 'OS' the train to the dispatcher and one day when I counted the cars on the California Zepher as it passed, low and behold there was a passenger on the outside right behind the dome of one of the dome cars. I was new and didn't really know what to do but when I OSed to the dispatcher I ask if that was normal. His reply has stuck in my memory now for close to 50 years and your video jarred it out of my mind again! Good Job. Clarence

    Awesome videoing of an awesome train, a first class job.
    Here in Australia we have very few early diesel era luxury train recreations. and they never run even close to 80 MPH.

      Sorry about taking so long to reply I've re watched the vid several times but didn't notice the comments.
      Probably because the Zephyr blowing the crossing away 21:40 makes me go silly & the only remedy is MORE TRAINS! ( & maybe a Coopers or 2, the Ale ( red label) not the Pale ( green label) Though the Pale Ale is still better than Fosters.
      This man dos not like bland ( & that goes for my trains too) CHEERS, BUDDY!
      PS, were you up in the loco ? Cause locos buck & rock around a lot.

    • @ILSRWY4
      @ILSRWY4  7 лет назад

      John Sergei Thanks and no, I was not up in the cab. It was a Rough ride, rocking and teeth jarring and even bottoming-out going over crossings, but hey.. this thing is an original 81 year old (built in 1936) restored train... and we were doing 80 miles an hours. :) so yes.. a buck and rock ride but well worth it! Thanks so much for watching again and commenting!

    • @johnsergei
      @johnsergei 7 лет назад

      I would really enjoy the rock and roll ride. I've found that even on the same track ( welded & smoother that is was 20 years ago) the older rollingstock is not a quiet nor as smooth riding as new trains.
      The new trains are so sterile, you don't even notice the speed at 100MPH
      But locos are something else. I'd give anything for an 80MPH ride in an this E3, even my Coopers.

      Thank you very much for stopping by to watch and comment... Unfortunately don't count on seeing this on the open rails for sometime. My friend Harold who is telling us about the Rock Island Mofia here in the video told me that it was very expensive and the the second day (this video) excursion did not do good in sales. There was talk about doing a trip to Minneapolis-St Paul to honor the Twin Cities Zephyr... but that fell through. So nothing is in the works for the future. Thanks again, have a great week!

    Great job with the video! Wow, what a special trip that must have been. I've been to IRM and rode it out & back sitting where you did - awesome experience. If memory serves, IRM "loaned" the 9911 to BN when they rolled out the first SD70-MAC in Ft. Worth, in the 90's. So I knew it had been out on the open rails at least once. I've been a lifelong Q fan, growing up in Lincoln, NE (my great-grandfather was Lines West President's personal secretary). Rode the Denver Zephyr round-trip from Omaha to Chicago in 1961 with my parents. Still remember the Vista-Dome experience! Amtrak is OK & really, all we've got, but those Superliner cars can't match the charm and uniqueness of a real Vista-Dome !

    • @ILSRWY4
      @ILSRWY4  6 лет назад

      Thank you! It could have very-well done that BN deal with the SD70-mac, as it has been on the rails many times before special events.. BUT what made this trip in this video so special and so rare, is it was a "regularly-scheduled" passenger-paying-revenue run. In that, it was actually scheduled on the time-table at Amtrak at Union Station, and that passengers could walk up and buy a ticket and that this was the first time since 1968 that it was a passenger paying run on a scheduled time table.

    • @burlingtonbill1
      @burlingtonbill1 6 лет назад

      +ILSRWY4 - I DO realize how special your trip was ! It was great to see 9911 hitting those high speeds for a sustained trip. She evidently has been well-enough restored that the IRM officials are OK with not having to "baby her" too much. I wonder if there's a log of the trips she has made since first coming to the museum?

  • @johnparker3199
    @johnparker3199 10 лет назад

    Although I am a member of the IRM, I didn't know about this trip till 12-13. In watching the fantastic video and reading the comments, I never saw who sponsored the venture. It obviously took extensive planning and someone had to make a large financial commitment. As a Q fan it is a natural for me but it should appeal to all vintage passenger train followers as there is nothing else like it! JP Hinsdale High '64.

    • @ILSRWY4
      @ILSRWY4  10 лет назад +1

      Hi John. Nope! Nobody sponsored the event. It was entirely done with IRM money and 100 percent volunteers. BNSF & Amtrak, and a few other small entities were given credit in the program for donating time, manpower, and trackage rights. But other than that, it was completely-privately done for a "true" Zephyr revenue run. And sales were somewhat poor... So all these factors are why it will be a very... VERY... LONG time before anything like this happens again. Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate the support! Have a great week! ~Joe

    The Zephyr is the only trainset I've ever seen on American rail. What I mean is that, as is common with European high-speed trains, the bogies are shared between cars, so the consist remains constant from run to run.

    • @ILSRWY4
      @ILSRWY4  2 года назад

      thanks for watching. The Zephyr is the only one you have seen "Today" but in the years past, there were lots of trains where the trucks (as you call bogies) were between the cars. One example is the M10000. Some modern commuters are like that, but the practice is often shied away from because its harder to separate the cars for maintenance. If the cars don't share the same trucks, and are built with their own trucks, then its easier to take one car out of service and replace it with another.

    I rode this exact same train, and BEHIND this E-5A, way back in 1963, from Fairfield IA to Chicago. Of course, there were two E-units, and the trainset was 9 cars long, but time intervenes. In revenue service, however, the Nebraska Zephyrs never went to Quincy IL, their route being on the Burlington's principal main line, Chicago-Denver, where of course, the pair of NZ trains ran between Lincoln NE and Chicago. There is nothing to compair with riding one of these Budd articulated trains--a smoothness and freedom from the usual slight jerkiness of individual coupled passenger cars.

    • @ILSRWY4
      @ILSRWY4  9 лет назад

      +Art Anderson Thanks for watching and commenting!! Yes we were all aware that it never went to Quincy - They just picked that route because it was all that was available from BNSF, that would make for a day long trip. At Galesberg the original service would have gone to Burlington just as you mentioned , but we were unable to do that, so at G'berg we turned south towards Quincy. So from Chicago to G'berg it was original route. Although I wouldn't exactly call this "Smooth" ride as you can see in the video...prob because its so old. It was rather jerky and swaying a lot, and there were times we actually bottomed out going across grain-crossing... Still very nice though!

    I'm just now catching this video in 2020. I am a bit confused because I thought the Nebraska Zephyr went through Burlington, Ottumwa and Creston Iowa on it's way to Omaha. At least that's what I thought I was riding in around 1962 from Ottumwa to Omaha. Regardless, it was a memorable experience. I was about 12 years old travelling with a bunch of 4H kids to visit Omaha. What I remember the most was when departing Ottumwa, it seemed like the outside started moving instead of the train. It was that smooth starting that you felt no movement. Thanks for the memories! (quote from Bob Hope)
