    I'm a consultant for a big 4 company in Begium and seems like the expectations you had at the beginning weren't really accurate. If you start your carreer as a consultant expecting glamorous offices, cocktail parties, or expect to immediately be top of the food chain, you'll of course be disappointed. The reason to start a career in consulting should be to listen, observe and learn. Entitlement is the most common weakness of junior consultants, in my opinion.

    Judging from this video and the video previous about quitting your consulting job it seems a lot of the aspects that attracted you to consulting were not the consulting job itself but rather the ancillary lifestyle you believed it would provide. Overall I believe this video addresses the issue of the "consulting kool aid" but you haven't delved very deep into the nature of the job, overall career prospects or wider range of project engagements and specializations that people will need to work toward as they rank torward senior assoc and beyond.

    • @ZoePritchard
      @ZoePritchard 4 года назад +45

      You're absolutely right! The reason for that is there is so much info about career prospects, how to get promoted, etc. already on the internet and I want to provide a new perspective on the things I believe are not adequately commented on. I do believe I speak about nature of the job though. When you begin, it's a lot of taking notes and formatting slides. Thank you for your feedback, I will keep it in mind when I film future videos :)

      I definitely think this video was directed towards new grads - so the in depth of about what the job actually entailed - she didn’t feel compelled to dive deep in. I will say from uni standpoint this was probably more beneficial because consulting at the big 4 has always been glamorized. So I think that’s why that was her focus

    Great video! I worked at Deloitte for over four years and I think its weird that so many people have such a drastic experience with consulting. I had a blast and loved consulting, but my brother in law (who I was able to bring into Deloitte) hates it and is having a miserable time. Luck plays a major role too. Being placed in the right project, right team, manager, work hours, what city you end up with, etc dictates how much you will like it

    I just discovered your channel and I’m really loving your videos! 💕 Although I found myself surprised at some of your points, specifically around expectation #2...so I thought I would share my experience as someone who has worked at a huge, global consulting firm (comparable to that of the big 4) for 2.5 years now. Sure, as an entry level analyst within your first year or so, you aren’t tasked on super innovative or strategic initiatives and may be stuck doing much of the grunt work (e.g. email comms, meeting notes, PP slide formatting) since that’s all you can be trusted to do until you prove otherwise. If you have a strong work ethic, remain proactive, and prove you’re a high-performer, you can gain much more autonomy and exposure to more exciting work very, very quickly. And this is really the case regardless of whether you work in consulting or not. In my experience, a huge part of it is not only your individual performance, but also the culture within your company and on your respective project/engagement. It sounds to me like you either ended up with a bad manager or perhaps the specific firm you worked for didn’t value its junior level employees as much as others do. This is not the reality of all big 4 or large consulting firms. In fact, I’ve seen junior level employees (including myself) get intentionally called upon to share their thoughts/opinions by senior leadership (although it’s true that a large part of the job at first is observing and learning from your more senior counterparts). Yes, at times it requires a lot of hard work and long hours, but you can’t really expect much else with such a large starting salary. I just want young people watching to know that although it’s possible to get stuck in the unfortunate situations you described in this video as a new consultant (and any other job right out of college), it’s also just as possible to have a completely polar opposite experience. Hope you don’t take this the wrong way! That’s just my two cents 😄 But thanks for sharing!

    I feel like its rough but at the same time the scope of work is unlike any other profession. You can develop an amazing network, specialize in a industry if u want and eventually leave the exit opportunities once ur a senior consultant are phenomenal! Nothing comes easy a few years of hard work are well worth it. Plus I was in Audit for a few months and boy Consultings feels amazing after that. The work is varied and you do get interesting projects every now and then. If u show initiative you can grow tremendously. I personally think it is the best place to start and sets u up well.

    Started working at one of the Big4 here in Spain 3 months ago. From the first week, I knew it wasn’t meant to me. It was frustrating that I was so hyped by colleagues who kept telling me how amazing is working at these places. Maybe they are, but as you and others in the comment section said, it is not for everyone. Currently I am still working at one of them due to COVID, because it allows me to work from home and even tho the pay is low, it’s better than zero revenue when there is an incoming worldwide recession. That’s the only reason I didnt quit yet. But yeah, it’s not worth it, imo

    I don’t think the problem is the job itself, it is more of your high expectations. I am trying to be an auditor and I already know that it won’t be glamorous. I know that being a new graduate they obviously wouldn’t put me on important stuff. You learn as you go, either you got fooled really badly by the company or you really didn’t do much research on what consulting actually is. I love working with numbers and I am not very outgoing and into partying. I would just love to have a few hours with my self and that is why I know I will be able to work in that kind of environment. If you can’t then you are not fit for this job or you don’t actually like this job. This video really seems bizarre to me because most of the stuff you mentioned are too good to be true and anyone would know that what they say is not always true.

    I went into consulting after 5 years of working in a business. So I didn’t start out straight out from school. So really enjoyed it as I didn’t have to do the fresh out of school junk work. I mean I understand why they get the fresh blood to do that as what else do you really know straight out of school? You don’t have any experience.
    On the flying and hotels. Oh that made me laugh. So true. You land up in real hell holes. However I landed up in some great projects in London, Dublin, Stockholm and Helsinki. So it’s not all terrible all the time. I find the projects in the USA were the worst except for NeW York. The terrible office that they give you at client site hahaha perfect. Such terrible setup for the consultants. I did find however I really did and still do get to enjoy the money I am making. So that I couldn’t agree totally with but can understand it could happen. I have 12 years of consulting and it just works for me. Tough skin and not caring makes a big difference as you say. First video I have seen of yours and you could not be more spot on about your points. Well done and all the best to you!

That's quite before you look at the physical, mental and emotional toll it takes on you. As you speak to. The only thing people will really miss out on if they don't go this route is being surrounded by similarly driven, bright 'can do' people. I did find your comment on the laptop riser kinda funny. it really speaks for how much (successful) marketing goes into portraying these otherwise quite mundane and sterile corporate career paths. it's all for show. the idea of big salaries and travel and drinking and prestige. perhaps it's a relic from the boomer years when these aspects of the job were a bit more common. I for one have become almost allergic to the corporate lifestyle. it's so sterile, inauthentic and salesy. they market it to be cool so wide-eyed young people who don't know any better leap for underpaid overworked roles.

    Thanks for sharing, I feel that the second one (which is the most important) can only be solved by being a freelancer consultant for smaller clients. What you've mentioned is not only in consulting jobs, but every job. Like for example when you work in stock market analysis field, you are simply not going to do any analysis. Rather a secretary or a data entry clerk for an analyst.
    For the travel (But not as luxurious) also can be solved by this.
    But you gotta have the talent and experience.

    Hey Zoe, I really appreciate your honesty. I'll be starting at a big consulting firm in a couple months and I was wondering what your biggest tips or advice would be for new hires. Thanks! (potential video idea lol)

    • @ZoePritchard
      @ZoePritchard 4 года назад +1

      thats a great video idea!! off the top of my head it would be: say yes to everything (like every project/opportunity), be clear with your manager about your working style or if something isn't working for you (like they're instructions arent clear or something), and network a lot!! In big 4 you really need to sell yourself to get on projects and this starts from day 1. Best of luck!!

      1) Get a sponsor at the firm. A sponsor should be someone who will always vouch for you, especially when the doors close and performance reviews are held. You want your sponsor to speak highly of you and really be a driver in your career development.
      2) Network with a purpose and be very strategic about the types of projects you choose. What types of skill-sets do you want to build?
      3) Build a brand - What will you be known for?
      Good luck!

    I’m currently looking into getting into management consulting but I’m not too sure what consulting firms like Deloitte and EY are looking for in candidates. As a new grad with no consulting experience, what GPA are consulting firms typically looking for? I am currently in a masters program at a business school.

      You can be pretty much any major and get internships in the consulting area to build up those skills. For example, I’m currently a Philosophy and Supply Chain Management dual major and working towards becoming a healthcare/ biotech consultant. I just need to get internships in the area.

    There is a big problem with the new generations, I worked for Deloitte Consulting Mexico for 7 years, for sure I learned a lot, my later jobs were obtained just because I came from a Big 4....for recruiters this was a Win-Win and a guarantee, and that´s a Good thing. Working for a Big 4 is like an investment: No Pain, No Gain..... But for sure, working for a Big 4 left me with many emotional and physical consequences. Maybe I was lucky....something that I consider was extremely important for me is that I speak 4 languages (English, Spanish, Portuguese & German) which opened up many opportunities for me and just "maybe" better destinations and projects...But, for sure, it´s good to work for a Big 4 to obtain recognition and experience....Regards.

  • @onlinecomment
    @onlinecomment 4 года назад +2

    The big problem is within your lack of actual work experience. If you had any, you would figure how to interact with difficult people and managers and navigate your way through it. Or how to move from one department towards another if you like it better there. There are far more worse jobs than this one. Coming straight out of college, your skill set and knowledge is below ground level, I doubt you will find a job with so many benefits and privileged for the level of ‘expertise’ you were offering. The good thing about large corporations is that they allow a literal 0 to grow into top management, whereas with smaller companies - you actually have to add actual value to the company.
