that depends on the concept of selling out, i always tought that in 91 they could reales MoP 2 and still sell as much, the time was just right for them
it's good to see Cliff smiling again, it's been a long time since i've seen something with Cliff smiling in it. i know it's the past, but somehow it's good to see him again. even if it's in a video R.I.P. Cliff Burton we still miss you dude you'll never be forgotten

TheRake Even though I didn't exist in the 80s, I'd say it was the best decade for hairstyles! The men looked awesome and the women looked f**king sexy as hell! Ever since I was younger I've always loved the 80s hairstyles and I even wanted one myself!
So awesome to watch these old clips with Cliff really kickin' ass with that bass.. the energy, commitment and style ... man of course they still miss him
yes I was a huge Metallica fan up until Load. I didn't hate them, I just liked them less. But no, I never thought of them as a sell out. IMO they just developed and that's not always a bad thing.
A. Nilla-or load is close full crap, guitar sound is worsties ever what they ever did, the black album is black masterpiece and all times best album is, and justice for all
Awe Cliff!!!!! RIP Cliff Barton! James sounds like he's going through puberty still lol. He sounds the same but his voice goes up and down, now it's just deeper. Lars and Kirk Sound Exactly the Same. Especially Kirk. It cool to see that their attitudes haven't changed much. Still for the fans.
80's looked like a killer time for any form of extreme metal or punk, but I was born right at '90. However, I was born to really young teenage parents who listened to some good stuff... close enough i guess.
"Or maybe you don't play 1000 miles an hour the whole time" It's stuff like this and knowing that Cliff was into blues and funksy music makes me think that if he hadn't died, we probably would've gotten an album like Load or Reload a lot sooner than we did.
Oh we used to watch this so much…being a metalhead in the 80s was so epic… it wasn’t so easy to see this stuff, you had to wait until it came on late at night and record on VHS if you were lucky. But it was all the more exciting as a result.
MTV Looks so great back in the 80s. Now it's not even about music anymore. The hardcore 80s fans are also awesome. Now everyone just cheers and do "dur meytal hornz" at every song and hold cameras.
***** That just proves, how stupid some fans can be. Going slower and softer isn't selling out right away. In fact, i think it made Metallica's music richer, more diverse.
OcelotDAD Yeah, Fade to Black is right. They also didn't like for whom the bell tolls or the intro to fight fire with fire when it first came out. It shows how stupid people are, they cry 'sell out' over anything that doesnt sound the same as their before stuff.
This is three years old, but let me tell ya´, yeah, actually the claiming of selling out started when they decided to record Kill Em All, cause some fans in thrash wanted thrash to stay super underground, pretty much lik Nor Black Metal some years later
lucky dominguez now THIS comment is two years old but it’s pretty funny that you mention norwegian black metal because that genre was heavily inspired by thrash metal and we wouldn’t have it if thrash had remained “underground”. it’s also a good thing to note that both Dead and Euronymous from Mayhem were fans of Metallica.
I was the kid on the other end of the line at 0:37!!! Trust me, motherfuckers...I did my best. I kept saying over and over "Cliff, dude, whatever you do... do *NOT* go to Sweden in September!!!!!"
ryan mackins You don't have to make Master of Puppets over and over again, but I think you can evolve better than making albums like Load and Reload. Sounds like generic Lynryd Skynyrd imo >_>
The thing that annoys me the most about their "evolution" is that most people nowadays associate them with Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters, which are easily their most overplayed and overrated songs ever. Sure, they are okay songs, and Nothing Else Matters has a fairly beautiful melody etc, but they have gotten so damn old. When someone asks for a song by Metallica nowadays you can bet they will choose Nothing Else Matters. Why not something more interesting, like Whiplash, Battery or Fade To Black or something? Sure, those songs are probably "overplayed" among fans instead, but they are certainly not very well known to the general public, which they should be, and once were.
lucky dominguez Cliff smoked hella weed dude. Probably did more drugs tbh. You might be thinking of James. Weed freaked James out and idk if he ever did other drugs...I think it was mainly or exclusively alcohol for him.
Yup, let me tell ya´ a little bit of the accusation since the first album: KEA: Some fans went nuts cause they dare to record their sound wich was considered selling out. RTL: Fade to black was a power ballad, also too many harmonies MoP: Much more harmonies, another power ballad, slowing down and moving to a big record company AJFA: They release a video for One so that´s all about selling out, plus harmonies BA: All the prior reasons are valid for this one, plus they pretty much left Thrash aside (The album still is amazing and so influential). Load: They cut their hair, they went in a blend of Heavy/Alternative/Hard Rock/ Blues/ Metal ReLoad: Same as the last one but more alternative. St Anger: The Napster thing was still fresh DM: "They went thrash again, they want our money" Sell outs HTSD: Who fucking know. People have always been loud and stupid.
They still care dont worry, just they change their style, but not big deal. more people and more fans know them. CAUSE NEW MUSIC, THATS SMART AND HARD DECISION.
Tonight in Stockholm, Metallica held a concert where they let the fans vote and choose all songs that were played. They also brought fans up on the stage that got to grab the mic, do a shout out and announce the next song to be played. I also remember when they cared about their fans. I remember tonight.
Metallica always cares. Only difference, back then they only cared about fans in America, Europe and Japan, now they care about their fans from all over the world including South America, China and Antarctica
To all saying they sold out, GET REAL! These guys are still selling out stadiums, selling albums and making music 30+ years later! You either get with the times in some way or another or you get left behind! Look at the music of the 80's, probably the greatest era and how many bands are still popular and touring? Say what you want but if you are a Metallica fan you stick with them no matter what!
metallica were a real band till black album after that they became a product. The only good album they realished after black album was st anger, death magnetic was a recycling bin of master of puppets and justice
metalehead95 ST.ANGER ROCKS!! I agree St.Anger was one of their most creative albums. A shame so many fans hate it to the point Metallica doesn't bother with it anymore. I hope they play ALL of St.Anger someday.
no man it doesnt suck because metallica said fuck it just fuck it we will do whatever we feel like...snd now they give you memorabilia songs...oh look hardwired it could be on kill em all loook spit out the bone it could have been on master of puppets......
Wait a minute? There were once white people in MTV? Oh yeah. I remember now. There is a reason I have not watched MTV in 25 years or more. And for all you dipshits out there, Metallica has never sold out. They have changed over time. Who hasn't? I used to look and dress just like those kids being interviewed. Over the past 30 years I have changed quite a bit but I am not a sellout FFS. Sure I love the old Metallica better than anything ever. Absolute all time favorite. But I am not so childish as to think that they would be that way forever. If you haven't changed over the past 30 years then you are a real looser.
judsonkr In their early days Metallica bashed posers and especially glam for their hairdos and makeup. They built their image around being as street and true as possible. Then you look at photos of Metallica in the 90's with Lars and Kirk making out - dressed in fancy clothes and wearing makeup. If that ain't selling out, I don't know what is.
I'm now 44 years old, and I went to see a show from the Metallica/Ozzy tour. And guess what? The day I went to see them in Sacramento was the day James fell off his skateboard at broke his arm, so instead of seeing Metallica, I saw big fat Ozzy (we was a cow then) and Blue Oyter Cult play instead. (BTW, if anyone in Metallica reads this, you still owe me a show) Back then, I loved their music and only knew what they looked like from the back cover of the Kill Em All album. (Yes, ALBUM)
I was born in 1976.But first time i heard about metallica in 1988.First songs for me were,Jump in the fire, phantom lord, seek and destroy, am i evil, and then Black album came out.It was a great time for metal believe me.All bands were amazing with their albums. In 1989 i started with Thrash metal, and death metal,of course together with hard rock bands.
Damn they are so young. I wish I get to see them live back then but of course I wasn't even born yet but would of been great to see them live at that time
It's like that fan said... its real music. They have something special. The diversity is amazing. From Fade to Black to Master of Puppets to Unforgiven to One....and everything in between. Fuckin love it..........

"We do what we wanna do, you know, if they consider that selling out, then...whatever" Wisest thing i`ve heard, and i`ve watched this thing many times :)
damn i wish mtv was still this cool
They should rename it SJWTV.
Bert Stir yes sir
Now lets stop talking about how Metallica changed. Lets talk about where this kind of mtv went...
R.I.P Cliff the LEGEND !!!
i dont give so much worthy for Cliff Burton, too overrated guy but anyway rip Cliff
Aaron Schula how does he come off bitchy and please explain how hes overrated
People claiming releasing Master Of Puppets on a major label was selling out.
Boy, were they in for a ride in the long run.
People have been calling them sellouts from the beginning lol Pure jealousy.
enter sandman is a great song with a wicked solo.
Lars hasn't changed a bit since then, except the hair..
Shounenn_ he talks exactly the same lol... the master of puppets book talks about how much more mature he was than James / Kirk at the time
Metallica, been accussed of selling out since the release of Kill Em All
lucky dominguez It's ridiculous really.
Coltallic i know, just don´t make sense
Ikr I'm sick of people getting that wrong, they sold out in 91 not 83
that depends on the concept of selling out, i always tought that in 91 they could reales MoP 2 and still sell as much, the time was just right for them
TheReal Ghost the never sold out dick
it's good to see Cliff smiling again, it's been a long time since i've seen something with Cliff smiling in it.

you'll never be forgotten
Did you know him?
Kyle the Sepultura and black sabbath fan umm, No, i didn't know Cliff personally
if that's what you mean
Why would you ask that ?
what i meant was, to me personally..
it's good to see Cliff smiling again
being 42 years old, i haven't seen that for a while
Cliff was a top bloke and to me it's kinda nice to see him again
if you understand what i mean
I wish I was alive in the 80s to see Metallica with Cliff
Kyle the Sepultura and black sabbath fan
i was born in 1973
so i was alive to see cliff with metallica from time to time
what i meant was
i haven't seen cliff for a while and it's good to see his face again
in the same way that it's good to see YOUNG JAMES HETFIELD again
you'll understand when you got older
it's a nostalgia thing
Oh
1986, the single biggest year in Thrash. Master of Puppets, Reign in Blood, Peace Sells were all released that year. Amazing.

holy shit the 80's was a wild decade for hairstyles
TheRake Even though I didn't exist in the 80s, I'd say it was the best decade for hairstyles! The men looked awesome and the women looked f**king sexy as hell! Ever since I was younger I've always loved the 80s hairstyles and I even wanted one myself!
Better than all the stupid fake shit on every one now.
Need more Misfits shirts.
ye
The hairstyles are fabulous.
The same year Cliff died :'( R.I.P
They were on the cover of Hit Parader magazine that came out the week Cliff died. I carried that damn magazine around for a month.
So awesome to watch these old clips with Cliff really kickin' ass with that bass.. the energy, commitment and style ... man of course they still miss him
i miss u old mtv
yes I was a huge Metallica fan up until Load. I didn't hate them, I just liked them less. But no, I never thought of them as a sell out. IMO they just developed and that's not always a bad thing.
You should give Load and Reload another listen. There are some great songs there. Try Bleeding Me or The Outlaw Torn
Stuart Otis Load, I'm fine with. Reload, not so much ;)
A. Nilla-or load is close full crap, guitar sound is worsties ever what they ever did, the black album is black masterpiece and all times best album is, and justice for all
Its hard to believe that they had to defend changing their sound from "kill em all" to "ride the lighting" or "master of puppets" as selling out.
The good old times, when Metallica were awesome.
RIP Cliff Burton
dayum son, back then when MTV wasnt crap!

Nice Streets of Rage cover photo.
That's actually the first time someone's commented on that.
Really? I love Streets of Rage, I have a 1-hour review of all three games on my channel.
1 hour? Wow.
You bet. It's a big favorite of mine. I love Streets of Rage as much as I love Metallica.
Oh we used to watch this so much…being a metalhead in the 80s was so epic… it wasn’t so easy to see this stuff, you had to wait until it came on late at night and record on VHS if you were lucky. But it was all the more exciting as a result.
wow people were calling them sell outs even in the master of puppets days.....that shit needs to stop.
James with fucking acne. Time change...

+gingerNinja688 He's cute though. o3o
+DappledFlower I hope you're a girl.
+Clutch Cargo And if not, so fucking what?

The guy at 2:56 "They're just like us."
And he sounds exactly like Lars XD
MTV Looks so great back in the 80s. Now it's not even about music anymore. The hardcore 80s fans are also awesome. Now everyone just cheers and do "dur meytal hornz" at every song and hold cameras.
Look at how humble Lars sounds when he says 'Metallica on the radio? Cool!'. Now they're just like 'Metallica on the radio? How many songs?'
Ah, the good ol' days when Metallica was Metallica and MTV was MTV.
man Metallica were talking about selling out as early as 1986.... seems like it's always been a deal with them after Kill em All
***** That just proves, how stupid some fans can be. Going slower and softer isn't selling out right away. In fact, i think it made Metallica's music richer, more diverse.

esta muy bueno el video, había escuchado a Cliff antes , pero nunca que hablara tanto. la verdad es uno de los mejores videos viejos sobre Metallica.
thumbs up if James sent you here!
I was the kid on the other end of the line at 0:37!!! Trust me, motherfuckers...I did my best. I kept saying over and over "Cliff, dude, whatever you do... do *NOT* go to Sweden in September!!!!!"
aaaahhhh hetfield so cute here!
He went from cute, through hot, to hotter, to damn sizzling hot in his old age.
if i can go back in time, i will go back to this era where this kind of music still qonquer the world...
Back when Metallica was METALLICA!!! Unaffected and brash! Loved 'em back then, hate 'em now. Sad how time changes things.
Unaffected? They still do what they want in their own way. You can't continue making master of puppets over and over. It's called evolution
ryan mackins
Wow, it feels great to see that there are still smart people out there, cheers mate!!!
ryan mackins You don't have to make Master of Puppets over and over again, but I think you can evolve better than making albums like Load and Reload. Sounds like generic Lynryd Skynyrd imo >_>

Man, so young looking, and didn't take themselves too seriously either

"Metallica on tour with Ozzy Ozbourne"
T'was Cliff's last tour, and Metallica's last tour as an opening act
RIP Cliff Burton
The day that Bob Rock convince Hetfield that he was a good signer... fuck it all up!!!
Damn, I was only six years old and in the wrong country
Hetty and Cliffy stoned on good pot.
Het never did drugs though, just lots of alcohol
lucky dominguez Cliff smoked hella weed dude. Probably did more drugs tbh. You might be thinking of James. Weed freaked James out and idk if he ever did other drugs...I think it was mainly or exclusively alcohol for him.
ALCOHOLLICA!!!
1:16 Cliff: Look what can I do with my eyebow :D
is that Dee Snider, the MTV host??
Ya it is 😀
yes
Ive never seen him look so manly
Kinda ironic that he's talking about Metallica in such a hyped manner since they hated Glam Metal.
Hahaha, that band from Japan Roudness ! Dee was a funny guy ! I'm sure lots of people would get butt hurt today if he said that....
I had this on VHS but the tape was lost long time ago....cool to see this again. Thanks!
Love them or hate them, they have always opened up what they do and how they feel. I have a lot of respect for that.. No matter who has come and gone.
Fenriz from Darkthrone kinda looks like Cliff here.
This is MTV?
What Cliff said will be stuck in my mind forever. We miss you, Cliff.
1:16 Cliff checkn him self out in the mirror
Wow were people really accusing Metallica of selling out in freaking 1986???
Yup, let me tell ya´ a little bit of the accusation since the first album:
KEA: Some fans went nuts cause they dare to record their sound wich was considered selling out.
RTL: Fade to black was a power ballad, also too many harmonies
MoP: Much more harmonies, another power ballad, slowing down and moving to a big record company
AJFA: They release a video for One so that´s all about selling out, plus harmonies
BA: All the prior reasons are valid for this one, plus they pretty much left Thrash aside (The album still is amazing and so influential).
Load: They cut their hair, they went in a blend of Heavy/Alternative/Hard Rock/ Blues/ Metal
ReLoad: Same as the last one but more alternative.
St Anger: The Napster thing was still fresh
DM: "They went thrash again, they want our money" Sell outs
HTSD: Who fucking know.
People have always been loud and stupid.
@@luckydominguez2654 And Always will be. I tihnk Metallica did the right thing in doing whatever they wanted.
remember when metallica cared about their fans
They still care dont worry, just they change their style, but not big deal. more people and more fans know them. CAUSE NEW MUSIC, THATS SMART AND HARD DECISION.
Tonight in Stockholm, Metallica held a concert where they let the fans vote and choose all songs that were played. You’re a dumb fuck, Metallica loves their fans and show it many times every year.
Metallica always cares. Only difference, back then they only cared about fans in America, Europe and Japan, now they care about their fans from all over the world including South America, China and Antarctica

i watch this from time to time just to remember my approach to music
I'm now 44 years old, and I went to see a show from the Metallica/Ozzy tour. And guess what? The day I went to see them in Sacramento was the day James fell off his skateboard at broke his arm, so instead of seeing Metallica, I saw big fat Ozzy (we was a cow then) and Blue Oyter Cult play instead. Back then, I loved their music and only knew what they looked like from the back cover of the Kill Em All album. (Yes, ALBUM)
I was 15 when this album came out. My friend got the tape and we jammed it and after the album was done, we spent 20 minutes looking for our jaws.
OH MY ...CLIFF :-))) Cliff was brilliant and his playing seemed effortless.
Hell yes, wish I could of been a teenager back in the 80's, those are real metal heads.
I was in grade school at the time,4 years til hearing them for the first time
I taped this when it was broadcasted. I really miss those days..
