These more in depth and walkthrough style videos I always find super helpful. Just so much detail and insightful tips that you can't really get in a 2 minute video. Keep up the great work Michael!!
Sidechaining the delays so the tail ducks down on the transient hits is brilliant! This one tip alone was worth the watch. Your vids and advice are always excellent!
@inthemix I actually questioned that too, since you did reverbs right after you sidechained the delays, and I was like "What, why didn't you do it with reverbs too?" Then you said "This'll be more like a stereo-widening than a reverb" and I went "Oh. Yeah. Gonna do that."
Bro is quite literally singlehandedly preventing Image Line's reputation from going down the dumps lol. The FL tutorial scene is so laughably bad its upsetting and you and also SeamlessR to a degree are the only people actually giving REAL, informed mixing and production knowledge with FL. I learned FL on my own, but I wish I had your tutorials when I was younger. Every amateur FL producer should see your videos.
This is so real dude, while there is some gratification and satisfaction in self-learning FL, it'd really been easier for us to understand some of its ins and outs slightly better from the beginning.
Self-taught producers such as I appreciate your work🤝. My journey with Fl Studio started right here 5 years later...a certified sound engineer😄. Much love from Kenya.
After editing this I've had your guitar loops stuck in my head all week! Such detail yet so easy and laid back. Hope to work with you again one day soon!
Here we can see a professional doing a brilliant mixing & mastering session for free. Personally I would make the long vocal reverb a bit larger, the vocal sounds a bit dry in the full mix in my opinion. I don't know if you used it because it isn't in the video, but I always sidechain a little all the instruments and sounds except for the kick and sometimes the bass with the vocals, this glues the vocals and the instruments together. Anyway, wow, the difference between the raw and the final master is incredible. Will save this video to watch it every time I start a mixing session, thanks for your work :)
Thank you for those insights! I want to go back and try that sidechaining technique now… The vocals also sound great with more reverb, I tend to overdo reverb and delay so pulled it back a little after the mastering section. Maybe I could increase the long reverb time and also side chain it? This could give a larger spatial effect without overloading it.
@@inthemix I watch all your videos, but also a ton of music production videos, so I can't remember if I learned this from you, but I think you already made a video about sidechaining reverb using Fruity Peak Controller, that's the technique I always use for reverb and delay, so I guess that's what you are thinking, also adding an EQ to the reverb cutting lows and highs.
Nice. I would have added a little bit of "air" to the lead vocals (and maybe a tiny bit to the "lead" harmony). Not "shure" if the drums were a stereo loop, or separate tracks. But if separate, I would have made a copy of the kick drum, then created a sub-kick out of the copy by HF cutting everything above 60Hz, and boosted the 40Hz with a medium tight bell by 6-8 dBs. Add some hard compression, and fast gate to reduce any "sub-tails" after the initial hit (this makes for tightness). Correct for any phasing between the kick and new sub-kick - then blended the sub-kick into the kick to taste. This adds a little "umff" to the low-end. Or maybe done this technique to the Bass guitar instead (not the kick drum). But definitively not create a "subs" for both the kick and bass, which would be too much. I think creating two subs would have taken away from the groove of the guitars. Nice though.
That kick reinforcement is something Im going to try. I especially like the idea of gating the additional sub to prevent the decay ringing out. Thanks for those ideas. Happy New Year!
Omg what an amazing new years gift, you always teach us so much 🥺🥺🥺 theres so much to learn at once when youre just starting but its so comforting to know we are being well guided 😊! Happy new year!!!
You're welcome! I'm trying to make my videos as easy to follow as possible these days. The best way to learn is to load it up alongside your own mixing project and take it one chapter at a time. You'll get there in no time.
Great video! I am completely new to mixing in so this is perfect for helping me understand what I need to focus on while I learn. Thank you, Chris Buck @ChrisBuckGuitar, and Kara for sharing your talents! 👏👏👏
Nowadays i find every mixing tutorial you see on internet is all a joke😂. Luckily after trying my best for 2 years now i learn all those thing by my own without a teacher and came to know tutorial is a joke😂. They wont tell you the secret of it.
Great video! Quick question: is that the LX480 reverb that ships with the Focusrite. Cannot for the life of me get it to work in FL Studio and Reddit seems to think it’s just somewhat incompatible. Did you have to tweak anything?
Thanks! It is the LX480 included with Scarlett (The Hitmaker Expansion). I installed it using the same website/activation process that any customer has to follow and I didn’t run into issues. I’m using FL on MacOS so I was expecting some hurdles. What system are you using? It’s possible that someone in our Discord server can help you get up and running.
I loved how you side chained the delays with the vocal very clever. Makes the vocals more clear! The vocal performance was amazing! Really good song I would listen to it a million times.
I really enjoyed this. But I would love to see videos like this in a much longer, less edited version. I find watching someone mix to be more helpful than any tutorial video. I would watch the video even if it were 2-3 hours long. I feel that a 17-minute video leaves too much out.
Thank you. I’ve tried posting long form content like that but unfortunately no one watches and RUclips kills the videos. It’s a shame because I would love to post longer unedited mix/ master videos but not if they only get 100-200 views… I actually get many comments asking for longer videos but the viewers don’t show up when I post them!
Wow... Extremely useful path for a beginner amateur like me. I appreciated a lot compression and eq, which saved the original groove from musicians. It makes everything professional in a hifi mode (not easy to be found nowadays). Bravo!
Wow, nice job! I like the results, only thing I would try (and maybe throw ayaw after trying) to start the "transition" drumbeats (the part you also repeated during the final showoff) from a lower level and let them build up to max, for some more dramatic effect. Maybe works, maybe not, worth a try. But yes, this is what mixing is about. Chapeau!
That's a great idea. Honestly, I'm considering making a video or stream where I try out all the brilliant suggestions that people have left in the comments here. This comment section is like a gold mine!
Thanks, mate! I typically keep the vocals quite simple, usually just one direct voice, perhaps with a few choir voices. I've come to realize that experimenting with doubling and panning might yield better results. I'll give it a try tomorrow. Thanks again for the inspiration! 🙂
Something that I learned when mixing this one is how the vocal production formed the mix. When more volume or excitement was needed, Karra recorded more layers instinctively and it made the vocal mix very straightforward.
Great video, you always giving us great gems. I have a question though not related to the video, wondering if you or our community can help me. When i start Fl studio 21 it opens up the options window automatically. How can i stop this from happening?
Happy new year Michael. Have been using FL studio since version 4, you would have been just a baby. Thaught myself the basics but you're helping my mixes shine. You're irreplaceable as a tutor. ❤
Wow, thank you for this walkthrough - it's relieving to know that I'm generally using similar techniques haha. I'm curious though - what's your approach with mix stems that aren't quite as well-performed and recorded? How do you go about fixing common problems in amateur recordings - aesthetically, like in the process of mixing itself; and also as a businessperson, handling the customer service aspect? I'd love to see a video talking about that. Anyway, great stuff as always!
Thanks for the kind words. I’ll happily answer your questions! When stems are not recorded very well (noise, hiss, poor microphone or room choice) I use RX or similar softwares to edit them before loading the stems into the DAW. Note: I didn’t have to edit any of the stems sent by Karra or Chris further than removing or reducing a few clicks and pops with gain. The tools I would use are noise reduction, spectral noise reduction, mouth de click, breath reduction, guitar hiss/amp noise remover and dynamic EQ (for excessive room resonances). When dealing with clients. I first fix what I can but if I think it could be better then I try to have a polite chat with them. I ask if they have other recordings/takes to look at or if they could record some parts again. I always make sure to communicate that it is a technical problem and not a creative issue. There was nothing wrong with them, just the recording! I hope that helps a bit?
i am so confused that i have to sidechain vocal with delay reverbs or just route to this track? is it compulsary to make buses and all or just put plugins on main vocal which is directly routed to master...
should ve gotten drum multitrack and showcase mixing with kick in, kick out, snare top/bottom, overheads, room mics... Kinda feels a bit rushed, just slapping compressor in a drum loop and be done with it. Drums are usually 30% of time spent editing and mixing just the drum group.
The drums were already a pre mixed stem from the Focusrite pack so they didn’t need too much individual processing. Often drum loops can be over processed already so I didn’t want to mess with it too much. However, if they were live recorded drums then I would have spent at least 15-20 minutes on them to build up the right tone!
Personally I LOVE huge reverb. I would have made it bigger. Also, I just GOTTA know, what do u think about adding a softclipper to vocals?🤔 I do it all the time to help get my vocals louder
The reverb level was so tricky to set. I went back and forth between huge swelling verb and subtle space. I tend to overdo reverbs so I kept it tame in this version, glad to hear that others would have added more! Edit: Regarding soft clipping vocals. I’ve only tried this on rap vocals but I imagine it’s good when you want more saturation and dynamic range control.
Bro pls help me on a tutorial on just reverb on vocals, but not with FL stock pluggins. Maybe break down the reverb on this track... And again, if I already have my vocal channel in mono; if you send your vocal reverb, does the send channel have to be mono or stereo?
FIrstly, I prefer the sends to be in stereo so that the full spatial effect of the reverbs and delay can be heard. I might break down the reverb in more detail but the truth is that reverbs are so diverse and can be pushed and pulled in many creative ways. There are no right or wrong settings!
WOW!! really love this!! As i am a beginner in the Mixing and Mastering section, this really helped me a lot and lets me know what I needed to improve. Thank You!! Hoping to see more videos like this.
SOOO DAMN GOOD CAN YOU PLEEEEEASE MAKE A VIDEO ON THE IMPUSHER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if mastering is good for it or what it should be best for!!!!!!!!!!!
Omg this is the most beautiful new year's gift I've taken! A start to finish mixing tutorial and even with my studio gears and the plugins I have... Truly amazing, I can't tell how much I'm grateful. Thank you 🥺💙
The only thing I would add/change would be 0.5 to 1 db boost to the low end to add a tiny bit more weight to the bass and kick which might enhance the grooved a bit
I will if I’m getting unwanted clipping or if I’ve changed the output level significantly. Otherwise, I can hear what’s changed for better or worse even if the volume has changed a little bit.
Great job Michael!!! How hot was your raw and final mix before mastering? I use the K-14 metering in my DAWs. And I noticed that you master to -1db and it looks like you're at -6 LUFS....I've heard that -1db is a great output dim to ensure against any clipping.....
The raw tracks were really hot, nothing wrong with that though. I had to reduce most of them by 1 or 2 dB just to give some room for the EQ and compression. You can see the raw tracks are technically clipping the mixer. Luckily none of the tracks were individually distorted because of the brilliant auto gain and safe recording modes on the interfaces. I’m not sure how the DR meter on masterdesk relates to LUFS. I was setting the gain until the compression sounded optimal to my ears (no excessive pumping when the kick hits, no vocal distortion etc). I hope that helps!
Admittedly, I use Wavelab when mastering for clients. But yes, FL has never held me back so never saw the need to change. The best daw is the one you know best :)
13:58 - what about that sub in the vox? why not highpass it? I just came from the highpass phase issue video, but didn't got why it would be a big problem to cut the lows until 100/150hz (where the vocals aren't even touching)...
So good! And as noted already, a good end product *always* starts with a good performance. Personally I would have tried to keep the vocals more immediate/intimate, so no delay and maybe a different approach to the reverbs.
Not sure if it's my speakers but I felt the master had a bit too much mid-range around 3k or so...my ears would start feeling a bit uncomfortabel when I played it loud. I didn't have this with the pre-master. I guess a little more reduction around this range or multiband comp would sort it out but like I said, maybe it's my speakers.
I value the input! I tend to mix and medium volumes and didn't turn it up loud during the video. When I play it back much louder, the midrange likely would benefit from some smoothing. I think multiband comp might be a great idea! I'm thinking of making a video trying out all the suggestions I have received in the comments and re mixing it for fun. This also lines up with the comments I made at the end, that I'm listening through and might want to change things later. It's a good idea to take a day away and adjust processing again with fresh ears (no time for that on camera though!). Thanks again.
@@inthemix Yeah I tried it on my headphones to see if I was imagining things or if my room acoustics were partially to blame (they're far from perfect), but it seems both give me the same impression. I feel the midrange is a bit better in the raw track. Just my 2 cents but I think this track would shine if it was eq'd a bit more like typical RNB tracks, more emphasis on the lows and highs with a bit of a cut in the midrange. See how that works? Also, wow, thanks for taking the time to reply! Means a lot!
@@inthemix Oh, that's interesting! Thanks for the answer! I love your videos. I've learnt so much from you over the years! Happy New Year. All the best and keep enlightening and entertaining us!
Hey Michael, I'm curious about the reverb (LX480), is that better than fruity reeverb? I've been using the fruity one for years and I love that it's not too CPU heavy and easy to use but I noticed that in this video the LX480 sounds so effortlessly nice. Let me know your thoughts. Cheers!
Fruity reeverb 2 is great but I think you can never have too much choice. Forgive me if you already know but the LX480 plugin is a reproduction of the Lexicon 480L digital hardware reverb. It’s a fantastically popular and famous reverb so it’s quite easy to copy or reproduce good settings on . As you said, it’s effortless. I really like plate reverbs and can’t get that tone out of fruity reeverb 2.
Dolby Atmos I was thinking to myself about it, and I came to the conclusion that it’s just high, end, mixing and mastering, correct me if I’m wrong after watching a bunch of videos trying to understand it they’re basically just remixing and remastering a song with supposedly better richer more enhanced effects the reason why I’m saying all it is you can technically do it all FL studio. Make your vocals in the back put your drums over there make 3-D sounds. Without using their platform and software, because basically their platform and software just make sure that every listener can hear it as such and it isn’t lost in wave format.
I always think my vocals are clean and clear but they often end up too sharp sounding or too bassy if i try not to make them bright. Always one of the other, are there any rules or tips for mixing a raw vocal where levels should be in an eq? Everyone i watch does it by ear or just knows. I use a eq chart but im still guessing what a clean vocal should sound like every session
How can I mute the kick while still allowing it to trigger the compressor, while I'm listening to the bass track in Logic Pro X? I want to be able to hear the effect of the compressor on the bass, without the kick interfering, but I'm not sure how to set this up. Thank you.
I watch your channel all the time. It can be really difficult navigating through FL Studio. What can I do if my patterns aren't lining up correctly in my arrangement? My melody and chords don't match up because the chord plays before the first melody note in my pattern and I've tried moving things around and it still seems off. Is there a way to fix this? Thank you for your time.
Wow, this is the video i was looking for all these decades, finally. It's super helpful and i would like to thank you guys for the efforts and love you put in to make us great producers. Thank you.
I think the heavy use of visually shitty focusrite plugins is pretty detrimental to the quality of this video. I've found myself pausing this repeatedly just to parse the plugin i am looking at, none of them are very visual and make it immediately apparent what you are actually doing. I personally don't mind that much, but since these are aimed at beginners it unnecessarily makes it much more difficult to parse the content.

Thanks for the great video!
SOOO DAMN GOOD CAN YOU PLEEEEEASE MAKE A VIDEO ON THE IMPUSHER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if mastering is good for it or what it should be best for!!!!!!!!!!!
Happy new year bro i was just watching your mastering video n was wondering you should upload more video on mixing!❤😂
Thanks. This one has been in the works for quite a while, I'm glad I am uploading more full mixing videos now.
Good idea!
I didn't even knew it was 18 mins long and it felt so short
Love your content 😄
When the video ended, I was like “that was more than 20 minutes??” This is great stuff and I’ll forever be thankful for his effort in teaching us
Thanks a a lot for the demonstration. Do you also gain-stage or adjust the plugin's output when EQ'ing or compressing?
I will if I’m getting unwanted clipping or if I’ve changed the output level significantly. Otherwise, I can hear what’s changed for better or worse even if the volume has changed a little bit.
You're the best
great video,
it's has been 2 year i'm making music (hobby) and i never got to go to the mastering phase lol (never "finish" a song)
I think it’s time to give it a go. Whats the worst that could happen?
You should have heard some of my first attempts at many many years ago 😂
@@inthemix Yes indeed!! Happy New Year to you!!
That guitar is amazing
Chris absolutely nailed it!
This guy loves fl Studio... he's never switched Daws
Admittedly, I use Wavelab when mastering for clients. But yes, FL has never held me back so never saw the need to change. The best daw is the one you know best :)
wow that's amazing work yah...! love It😍😍
this video was helpfull, keep it simple like this and keep creating
Thanks for the great work 🔥👏🌟
13:58 - what about that sub in the vox? why not highpass it? I just came from the highpass phase issue video, but didn't got why it would be a big problem to cut the lows until 100/150hz (where the vocals aren't even touching)...
So good! And as noted already, a good end product *always* starts with a good performance. Personally I would have tried to keep the vocals more immediate/intimate, so no delay and maybe a different approach to the reverbs.
What I find more facinating is the channel set up before mixing.
It’s all in my template that I released on my Discord server (And YT some time ago). Maybe I could break it down in another video?
🐐
I really love the Way you balance ♎ the mix , using reverb & Delay for really you'r my favorite mix engenner!!! More videos Dad✓ 😢😢😢
SHE SINGS AMAZING AND YOUR A GENIOUS , LOVE UR CHANNEL
A bit off-topic question, but since you are from Scotland, why you don't have that Scottish accent? :D
Studied in England 🏴 Married an American 🇺🇸
Accent got messed up!
@@inthemix Oh, that's interesting! Thanks for the answer! I love your videos. I've learnt so much from you over the years! Happy New Year. All the best and keep enlightening and entertaining us!
youre my inspiration whenever when am down Sir you just give me this power to make something nice .....youre the beat Michael keep up Sir
Thank you. I’m so glad to have that effect!
You're incredible! Thank you for all your help to the producers community!
Some of the greatest people united to make this video! Congrats!
@@inthemix Awesome thanks for the feedback!
How about sidechaining the vocals to the instrumental to duck the IT where vocals are prominent?
Dolby Atmos I was thinking to myself about it, and I came to the conclusion that it’s just high, end, mixing and mastering, correct me if I’m wrong after watching a bunch of videos trying to understand it they’re basically just remixing and remastering a song with supposedly better richer more enhanced effects the reason why I’m saying all it is you can technically do it all FL studio. Make your vocals in the back put your drums over there make 3-D sounds. Without using their platform and software, because basically their platform and software just make sure that every listener can hear it as such and it isn’t lost in wave format.
Incredibly useful and inspiring - many thanks
what is the purpose of bypassing you wrote it several times. ?
Great question. It’s so that you and I can hear the effects being turned on and off. This way we can hear if we like the changes.
Ahhhhh it's all so easy. Mixing the stuff I record in my 8x9ft spare bedroom...in my 8x9ft square bedroom is like mixing ice-cream with dirt.
Was always wondering how I can copy the presets of a plugin to another track easily. I'd never assume just to drag and drop xD
thank you!
More stereo and seperation
👍 - also for the YT algo! 😊
Respect! Loved ur mix. I wish I was even half as good
How can I mute the kick while still allowing it to trigger the compressor, while I'm listening to the bass track in Logic Pro X? I want to be able to hear the effect of the compressor on the bass, without the kick interfering, but I'm not sure how to set this up. Thank you.
Top-notch as always 🔥🔥. Waiting for release
Just like you want to tell me with those few plugins on vocals the damn whole song is done yo yo yo❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤Thanks man
Sound amazing and her voice OMG I just melt loved it. Great video but we need a whole session with all the details please make a pay course.
That master is ear candy! Amazing!
Thank you!
У каждого музыканта разные чувства звука и резонанса. Чем чище духовная енергетика - тем красивей звучание.😊🙏🏻🤍👍🏻🎄🎅🤗
Wow, this is the video i was looking for all these decades, finally. It's super helpful and i would like to thank you guys for the efforts and love you put in to make us great producers. Thank you.
nice video format, the right length, very informative, thanks!
I'm glad I balanced it right this time!
Superb Michael! Enjoyed that!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏. Cheers!
That's awesome and Happy New Year.🎉
Happy New Year!
I think the heavy use of visually shitty focusrite plugins is pretty detrimental to the quality of this video.
I've found myself pausing this repeatedly just to parse the plugin i am looking at, none of them are very visual and make it immediately apparent what you are actually doing.
I personally don't mind that much, but since these are aimed at beginners it unnecessarily makes it much more difficult to parse the content.
making such a hit out of at best a mediocre singer and not so musically interesting composition. Impressed! Thank you for your work!
This guy doesn’t know how much he has helped me, I’d love to meet him and thank him in person 🙏❤️
