Thank you very much for your comments and information. I got the positive result of the British citizenship application for my wife in 3 weeks. I immediately applied for a British passport and exactly 12 days later the passport arrived. Regards
Update: My citizenship application has been approved! It took the Home Office just under 2 months to get back to me. I've booked my citizenship ceremony for next month. Thank you Jake, I couldn't have done it without you and your helpful videos! :)

Hi Jake, probably the last question from me as im filling my application form now😅 What will be the answer for the question " have you nade any previous UK immigration application in the UK or abroad? We were on tier 2 visa and then ILR for a year but the application was filled by the company and their solicitor and not my myself. Hence I'm confused what will be the answer to this question. As always really appreciate your response 🙏🏼
Very useful and well-explained, thank you Jake! Wondering if you can help me on this before I continue with my application. I got married 2 months ago and have updated my employment details with my married name. However, my passport and brp which I will be using for my application still has my maiden name. Is it possible to use this or would I have to update them both so all records will match? Would appreciate your advice. Thank you!
Hi Jane. I believe you can upload your marriage certificate as one of the ID documents to prove your change of family name and still continue with your application. Also in your application, you can do an explanation to say that you've recently married.
Hi Jake! Thanks for posting this video its really helpful. I do have a question, Are you allowed to travel abroad for a holiday within that 12 month period after receiving your ILR. Will this delay your eligibility of applying for Citizenship?
Hello the boy who lived! Pleasure to meet you. Yes you can still go for holiday within the 12 months from ILR to Citizenship application as long as it doesn't go more than 90 days as per home office guidelines.
Thank you for making this video! Very informative and precise! Too late when I came across your video, I just realised I made a mistake in filling up the online form huhuhu I ticked NO when asked about the any previous uk immigration application. I won't be able to change it anymore, will this affect my entire application? I am soo stressed right now!
Hi Kenn. They will contact you if they have a query. They should still be able to see your previous visa applications on the system. This would not be a reason to reject your application. So until then, don't stress. They will contact you if needed. Also if you can share this video to your mates to prevent any mistakes that would be great. Have a blessed Sunday 😊.
Thanks for the great video Jake, super helpful. I have one question- in order to apply for the citizenship, do you need to spend 1 year after getting ILR or it should be total of 6 years after you move to UK? For instance, moved to UK January 2017 and got the ILR on May 2022. So someone should wait until January 2023 or May 2023 to apply the citizenship?
Hi Jake, again, thanks for informative and detailed guide! Question - during application processing after submission an applicant stops working for employer or changing a job, does it impact the application and need to inform HO that job changes or in job search? Thank you advance.
Hi Rust, thank you for appreciating. For citizenship, there was no clause to inform for any change in employment. That would have been applicable for ILR.
Thanks Jake for your marvellous video. I've a question related to my employment, I've become a qualified pharmacist in August then took 2 months gap and started to locum as a self-employed (sole trader) by mid October. What documents I can submit if I'll apply in December (I've 5 years P60). I will register my work in April 2024 and because I have just started, there's no self- assessment document and I've no accountant, also I have only got paid for a couple of shifts on my bank statement, or do I need to only clarify my situation in a cover letter? also, do I add my name and address in employment details part? Many thanks ♥
Hi Jake, your videos are very informative and helpful. Thanks. I have a question as a nurse myself, came in tier 2 visa, do i need to have B1 english test? Thanks
Hi there👋. Thank you for watching and appreciating the my video. You can use the same IELTS result you used for your very first Tier 2 visa. That is accepted as there is a clause in the rules that any English language test used to obtain visa to work in the UK can be used for citizenship application.
Hi Jack. Many thanks for this. Very useful. I did understood the referees. However I just found out about countersignatures. So m just enquiring: 1. Apart from their personal details, are their signatures required at the very first British citizenship application or after filling out the paperwork for passport, when the application is granted?. You have mentioned about taking passport-size selfie, but I saw somewhere that countersignatures are required at the back of picture and passport application.
Hi Esha. The citizenship application comes first. Part of the requirements are the 2 referee forms that (yes) needs to be filled and signed by them. Then you put a passport size photo of yourself on each form. Then scan these for upload.
@@nursejakeUKhey I saw this too. I'm a bit confused. Why do we need to write our details behind the photos if they are to be pasted and scanned? Will they be able to read it?
Hi I am stuck with this english language requirements test. Which one we can use, can we use the one we did when we came first time to the UK 6years old one? Or do I need to take a new English test ? Thanks
Hi Nadia. Yes if you have a previous English language test that allowed you to obtain a working visa, then yes you can use the same result. There is a clause written down in the government website. Be aware that some handlers for the application are not aware of this clause. You just have to tell them if ever they call you.
Hi Jake, Thanks so much for such an informational video. Do you know if I still need to provide a Life in the UK certificate if I got my ILR when I was under 18 y/o (I got the ILR status from my parents applying) or do I need to do that test?
Hi Angeli. It is one of the requirements. For those who took it to apply ILR, they can use the same results. I'm afraid for your case, you will need to take the Life in the UK test.
Thanks Jake for this brilliant video. I was just wondering if I my British citizenship application will be affected by refusal of two US tourist visas I had in 2015 and 2016. Probably under the good character part. Many thanks. xx
Thanks for these informative videos- just wondering how much time it took for naturalization application confirmation, I have submitted for my application 5 weeks ago, still no update, where do we check the application status ?
Hi Sathya. Thank you for watching. It can take between 3 weeks to 6 months depending on the queue. I believe since last year, they have been prioritising Ukraine refugee applications so might take a while but just hang in there.
Hey@@nursejakeUK , Finally received home office confirmation and invitation for Citizenship ceremony after 8 and half months although we have had all documents in proper order. Many thanks to you for the information and process you have in your video.🙏
In the online application it comes referee no. Someone must be a British citizen and 25 years or old either professional or not . The second referee must be standing professional . That’s how it is when you doing online application!
Hi Jake, my husband and me, have INDEFINITE TO REMAIN STATUS, for around 20 years, but we were sent a paper document at that time, NOT A CARD, I believe cardsare new. Do you think we can apply for Citizenship with that document straight away? Thanks!
Hello 👋. Thank you for watching. There should be no problem as that was the government's documentation before. Just upload a scanned copy and enter the document number on the ILR certificate.
Hey, thanks for this! It’s very thorough. I’m getting my British certificate this week :) Very quick question… in your British citizenship certificate, did it include your middle name (for us Filipinos, our mother’s maiden name)?
Hi Elma. Thank you for appreciating. Yes whatever name is on your current passport including the middle name will be reflected in the certificate. Congratulations🎉
Hi there Jonas. As long as they meet the description (1) professional and the 2nd referee is British National and they've known you long enough that would be okay. As long as they are not related to you.
Hi there! If your current visa/ILR and passport still have at least 3 months of validity left by the date of your planned return to UK then that should be fine.
Hi there. For this, you passport and your visa document (ILR or similiar) should be enough. You can also upload the electoral roll or license if you want. Bank statement for 5 years not necessary.
Hi Jake, question - when it comes to previous applications as per form - if can't find UAN for previous applications, do you think it can be kept empty or put BRP number of home office decision letter reference for example? Thanks in advance.
Hi Rust 👋 Yes the email from Home Office Atlas has the reference number at top of the email. That is the same number in the application. So yes you can write that reference number. Just search "Atlas" in your email like I did and it's quite easy to find it.
Good morning please can you tell if I could edit after I paid fee and I got an appointment fingerprint on march but I still not upload my document I did mistake last name of my mother in my application form neutralisation please I am waiting your reply
Hi Bahia, the application form itself cannot be ammended online. You will need to contact the Home Office to explain this and make sure to upload all your documents containing the right name. Contact from web: General enquiries phone number: +44 (0) 300 790 6268 or email:NationalityEnquiries@homeoffice.gov.uk During your March appointment make sure you say this to the UKVCAS personnel and they can check that your name is now correct on the system.
Hi there. Thank you for watching. For the citizenship application, no, you just scan and upload it to your UKVCAS account and show the real ILR brp card during your face to face appointment.
Hi Sharen. Here is the actual video of my face to face appoint day. ruclips.net/video/lH3MOWyhy1I/видео.html They basically check your passport and other docs.
Hi Jake , was nice video and helpful! I would like to ask couple of things for my wife because she want to apply for British citizenship!in June this year she have already 6 year residency and have ILR from last June ! Mean in July she can apply! Last year in May she did biometric for renewal BRP ! Need again to do the new one for this application? Second thing she study here in Uk also not have yet the degree she need only to make this test in Uk ?from where she’ can do this ? Thanks
Hi Costel! Thank you for watching. For the citizenship application, there is no more biometric like the one you do in the post office before. You will be booking a face to face UKVCAS appointment after you submit your application. That's when they check your passport and take a photo of you. If your wife already passed the "Life in the UK Test" for ILR, she can use the same result for citizenship application. Hope this clarifies things. Good luck!
@@nursejakeUK hi , she halve indefinitely leave to remain, but she never did some English test o course , she study now in university but next year she will finish and maybe want to apply now ,
@@costelolaru4738 Oh you mean the English test. Yes she has to take an accepted English test. See full government guidance on these here: www.gov.uk/english-language#:~:text=researched%20in%20English-,Overview,B2%2C%20C1%20or%20C2%20level
Thank you for this helpful video, Jake. I was under Tier 2 Skilled Worker and recently got my ILR. I have been married to a British citizen for 3 years now. I heard that I do not need to wait for 1 year to apply for Naturalisation. Is this true?
Hello. That would be the same IELTS result I used for NMC and first visa application. There is a provision in the rules that you can use a previous English language result that was used to approve any previous visa, provided you have stayed in the UK since then.
Hi ma'am Nene. You need to apply for British citizenship first to be able to get a British passport. There is no pathway from ILR straight to a British passport.
Hi Jake, I am confused about the question: your biometric residence card (BRP) I do have (BRC)card. Is it the same? If so can I put my BRC details in. Thank you
Hi jake, I have a question. I am an airline pilot in the uk and i want to apply for the passport. Are there any exceptions to the time spent outside of the UK as i am constantly travelling and exceeded the 450 days.
Hi there. Thank you for watching. I've never had this question before and it's a very unique one. The best thing to do before applying would be to email the Home Office (specifically the Citizenship enquiries) regarding the situation as their written guidelines don't cover this scenario.
Hi Jake, Im currently applying for my British Citizenship, at the end part of submitting the application, from my previous visa applications, they will usually ask you to sign a declaration form which is a consent for the Home office to verify application information. This document has a part 1,2 and 3. In my current application they did not ask me one, and I can see from your video you haven't been asked too? Am I right? thanks Jake!
Hi Jake, another query. Can husband and wife apply together in the same application? I see an option of adding another applicant for partner above 18 as of the option. Thank you again for answering my queries, I really appreciate it 🙏🏼
Hi Tripti, if you have both met all the eligibility criteria then yes. But if you did not arrive at the same time or your wife still needs to do the English test or Life in the UK test, then only you can apply for now.
Hi do u have any idea that i will bring all orignal documents at ukvcs appointment but expect my c merrieg certificate bcuz i have only photocopy of tht certificate.... is it ok?
Hi there. As a minimum, after the online application, there will be a list given to you stating the documents you need to provide. If it is dependent visa, upload your marriage certificate as proof of your relationship and also your current British passport as main sponsor. If your wife doesn't work, then you don't have to provide any work related documents. Hope this helps. All the best with your application.
@@nursejakeUK Thank you so much! If it's alright with you, can I also ask you these questions? 1. Do you have a previous visa, entry clearance, or leave to remain where you had to prove your knowledge of English? (YES ). Tell us the previous visa, entry clearance, or leave to remain you had 2. Have you made any previous UK immigration applications in the UK or abroad? Question 1, Is this supposed to be entry clearance or ILR application visa? Because I only remember taking the English test for the residence visa and for ILR. Question 2, is this from entry clearance -> limited leave to remain -> ILR? I'm very sorry for asking too much. And thank you for replying to me.
Hello! I got my ILR decision last 03/05/22. Can I submit my application for British citizenship up to 28 days before this date? Not been out of UK since I got my ILR. Thanks!
Hello with the travel history a few years back I was being booked by my family member to travel to my country from the uk however she does not contain the flight history since then so what could I do on that section?
Hiya 👋 For the application form online, you need their full name, address, and passport number. When you finish paying, you will be forwarded to download a REFEREE FORM. That needs to be filled and signed by your two referees.
Hello there, this is santos, I have a cuestión, did RUclips send you a partnership application, for you to monetize right after you got the 1000 subscribers and the 4000 views hours, or you waited some time (how much)?. I already have the requirements and don’t know what to do next. Thank you very much.
Thank you very much this wonderful video. Wanted to ask you a question please. I got my ILR in 1998 and then in 1999 I had a very premature baby, looking after her was very difficult and didn't apply for my passport. In 2008 husband got job abroad, we came uk in every two years since till last year. We moved bk to uk last year and now wanted to apply for British passport. Could you please let me know the procedure? Many thanks
Hi there. The approval email contains instruction to go to your selected council's website to book your ceremony. How quickly you get the ceremony schedule depends on the queue.
@@nursejakeUK I didn’t get instructions about the council’s website, I only got mail that my application has been concluded that I will receive official documents about the ceremony soon… been waiting for close to two weeks now, might need to contact them again. Thanks for the reply
@@sundaysundayosasumwen5032 Oh you applied by paper? It might come in another mail. If you remember the borough you chose during your application for future ceremony, you can message the council and ask them dates and how to book the ceremony. You will not be invited but have to book yourself.
Hi there. I've double checked the guidelines and there is no mention in the eligibility criteria of being employed to get approved. There is however a clause saying that you "must also intend to continue living in the UK". So although it's not written explicitly, having a job is one of the ways to prove that you intend to continue living and working in the UK. You only get the passport once you have been approved the citizenship. At this point, even you don't have a job, as long as you have your certificate of naturalisation, you can apply for British Passport. I hope this answers your question.
@nursejakeUK I will quit my job and become director of my own company. This proves my intention to stay in the UK and hope this should be fine.. Please comment.
Hi Jake, do we have to scan and upload all pages of our passport? And if yes. Which section? What if we have two passports, one if which is expired. It'll be way too many pages
Hello @Shanmugam! Thank you for watching my video. You will send your old passports when you apply for the British passport but it will be returned once everything is approved.
Hello,Jake! How are you? I am going to be a british citizen this(2023) year mid.My father is already a british citizen too. Now, my mother (from india who is uneducated).Could you please help me any ideas to get my mother to the UK permenantly? Can you please suggest me with possible ways to apply for my mother either through direct ILR route or long term visa route or any other routes that you know to enter easily and to stay here permanently? I will really appreciate your time and help. Thank you!
Hi Shanmugan! Thank you watching and leaving this important question. How old is your mother? Unfortunately there's not much option for getting parents as dependent. You can apply for her to be your dependent as long as you can prove that she can no longer take care of herself and nobody else from your immediate family can take of her back in India. And she has to be above a certain age. If she is below the retirment age, another option would be for her to come on a working visa from any company and after 5 years apply for ILR. Did your father come to UK first then got you to come? How did he get citizenship?
@@nursejakeUK Hi Jake! Thanks for your time. My mother's age is 42. I am the only son/one child to her. I am here (UK) and my father also here and she has no one in immediate family to take care. My father came through work Visa and i got here then. Please help me with this and if you know any good experienced solicitor please ask them for me. I will really appreciate you. Thank you,Jake.
Hi Jake. Thank you for all theinfos. Please may you guide me on this matter. I am applying for my ILR Tier 2 General Migrant visa . Since we are allowed to apply at most 28 days before completing 5 years period, I wonder if it would be an issue if I chose the super priority route as on the day a decision will be made for our application I will be, say 27 days short of the required 5 years qualifying period. Thank you & kind regards
I can't really be sure to be honest. That is quite a unique scenario. I don't know anyone who's done it this way. Criteria-wise it should be okay to apply but I guess the validity date will be after your qualifying period. So you may get a result as approved quicker but your ILR BRP card will only be valid after the five years period.
Hi Tripti. There is a list of jobs listed in the "acceptable professions" to be a referee. I cannot see software developer on the list. There's this: "British Computer Society (BCS) - professional grades which are Associate (AMBCS), Member (MBCS), Fellow (FBCS) (PN 25/2003)". Not sure of software developers are part of this? See the full list on the official gov website here: www.gov.uk/government/publications/british-nationals-nationality-policy-guidance/general-information-all-british-nationals-accessible--2 Then go to "Commonly used terms in Nationality regulations and guidance". Of the 2 people, at least 1 should be on the professional list and 1 can be non-professional as long as they have a British passport. Both people must have known you for at least 3 years. Hope this helps!
Dear, Would you be so kind to let me know how long time you waiting between applying for a British citizen application and receiving a letter of confirmation, please? Best Regards
Hi there, firstly thanks so much for sharing all this extremely helpful information. I am a little confused on one thing. I applied at the beginning of Feb, and had my referees sign the forms then that same weekend, but my biometrics appointment isn't till next week. So should I have them do the forms again, or the date that goes with the initial application (pay date) should be fine? I think you said a week within, but is it a week within the day you pay or your biometrics? Thanks for any help with this.
Hello 👋. Since you have filled the referee forms, you can now paste your photo (with name and signature at the back of photo) , then scan and upload these 2 forms to your UKVCAS account. You don't need to submit the hard copy during the appointment but bring it just in case. Any date between your payment date and before your appointment is fine.
@@nursejakeUK Thank you so much for your reply, is it okay that the date is 2 days before the payment date? As I had already saved the forms before, to be prepared.
@@MissKiwiCM Oh I see. Hmm. I've never had this situation asked before. I guess it would be wise for it to be signed within the application period and not before. Best have them sign again within date (between application date and date of appointment).
Hi there. Is it the Philippine Embassy Dual Citizenship you are asking about? If it is, not advised as the room is small, just enough for the applicants. If you are asking about British ceremony, it's per local council policy. Check if family is allowed.
Hi jake. Need some help I have all the documents but someone told me that I have to wait 10 years if I was overstayed any time in uk. I was overstayed in 2014 few months. Will that affect my applications or rules are changed to 5 years. Please guide me thanks.
Hi Muhammad. Which pathway are you? Are you on the tier 2 working visa pathway? Then you only need 5 years continuous residence in the UK. So if we start after 2014 to avoid the counting of your overstay then 2020 you would have been eligible if you had continued working in the UK from 2015 with a valid working visa.
Hi Harriet. Thank you for watching. It's NOT automatic I'm afraid. They still need to meet the years required and apply first for ILR then Citizenship after one year. If you all came to the UK at the same date then you can all apply for both ILR and citizenship on the same date as well. Everything has to be applied for.
Hello. Can you still travel with PH passport if you have not applied for the british passport yet but have a decision and/or attended your ceremony already?
Hi as long you have not had the ceremony, the ph passport remains valid. On the day of ceremony, your ph passport becomes invalid in the system as you will be British citizen on the system.
Hi Manju! It takes between 4 weeks up to 6 months the latest. It varies depending on queue and what time of the year you apply. Still better to submit earlier rather than later.
Hi, jake. You okay? Just a quick question. I got ILR visa directly without staying 5 years because my father is a British citizen here. I have been in the UK with ILR for 13 months. Now, can i apply for my naturalization?

Also if you can share this video to your mates to prevent any mistakes that would be great. Have a blessed Sunday 😊.
Thanks for the great video Jake, super helpful. I have one question- in order to apply for the citizenship, do you need to spend 1 year after getting ILR or it should be total of 6 years after you move to UK? For instance, moved to UK January 2017 and got the ILR on May 2022. So someone should wait until January 2023 or May 2023 to apply the citizenship?
Hi Kerim. Thank you for watching and appreciating. 😊 It should 1 year as ILR. Not based on your arrival to UK.
That is why as soon as eligible, apply for ILR so you get the citizenship sooner.

You're welcome. Happy to help 😊.
@@nursejakeUK Many thanks, Jake!
Great video mate keep it up 👍❤️
Thank you Ahmed 😊.
Hi Baher. I believe I've replied to you on messenger. Thank you for watching. Hope everything goes well. 😊🤞
That is accepted as there is a clause in the rules that any English language test used to obtain visa to work in the UK can be used for citizenship application.
ilr means indefinite you can stay as long as you want in uk and work anywhere without any limitation
Yes, as mentioned in ILR video but this is only if the law doesn't change whereas citizenship has a more solid footing with regards to both
@@nursejakeUK i think new rules and changes by law are for those without ilr and if you have there no changes by law
Hi Jack. Many thanks for this. Very useful. I did understood the referees. However I just found out about countersignatures. So m just enquiring:
You are to sign the back of the passport size photos before pasting them on the form.
@@nursejakeUK Hi Jack are digital signatures ok?
@@eshakataria73 On the photo? No, has to be handwritten at the back of photo. Same with referee forms. Handwritten signature.
Hi Jake! Thanks for the video! Just a quick question. Did you upload all the pages of your ph passport? Or just the stamped ones? Thank you!

Thanks Jake for this brilliant video. I was just wondering if I my British citizenship application will be affected by refusal of two US tourist visas I had in 2015 and 2016. Probably under the good character part. Many thanks. xx
Hi Fola! Thanks for checking and leaving a question. The good character part is done by 2 referees and should not be affected tourist visa refusal.

Hi Sathya. Thank you for watching. It can take between 3 weeks to 6 months depending on the queue. I believe since last year, they have been prioritising Ukraine refugee applications so might take a while but just hang in there.

Hello. That would be the same IELTS result I used for NMC and first visa application. There is a provision in the rules that you can use a previous English language result that was used to approve any previous visa, provided you have stayed in the UK since then.
I got my indefinite leave here from ‘ 2000’ but I didn’t apply British passport and I’m pensioner here already, can’t still apply British passport?
Hi ma'am Nene. You need to apply for British citizenship first to be able to get a British passport. There is no pathway from ILR straight to a British passport.

If your wife doesn't work, then you don't have to provide any work related documents. Hope this helps. All the best with your application.

What if we are not employed while applying for British Citizenship/Passport ? What if I quit my job after receiving ILR ?

Hi Jake. Thank you for all theinfos. Please may you guide me on this matter. I am applying for my ILR Tier 2 General Migrant visa .
Hi Jake, can a software professional be a referee? I work in IT and the only people I know are my colleagues.
See the full list on the official gov website here: www.gov.uk/government/publications/british-nationals-nationality-policy-guidance/general-information-all-british-nationals-accessible--2
Then go to "Commonly used terms in Nationality regulations and guidance". Of the 2 people, at least 1 should be on the professional list and 1 can be non-professional as long as they have a British passport. Both people must have known you for at least 3 years. Hope this helps!
