This is the last moment of happiness and the song beautifully brings out the disbelief Sanjay feels at his immense good fortune. It is because Kalpana was such a good human being and Sanjay someone wise enough to know its rarity that their incomplete love story affects us this much. It is the reason we understand Sanjay's abiding desire to avenge his love which is the core of the movie. This song is absolutely essential to establish that. It comes at a point when we already know Kalpana is dead and that Sanjay, despite his memory loss, is still trying to avenge her death; so while this is a romantic song, the mood should be melancholy. Aamir Khan is absolutely bang on with that interpretation. So, learn to appreciate Aamir the artist as well; if he had been just an actor happy mouthing whatever was given to him, he wouldn't have been part of movies that changed Hindi Cinema for ever. We have seen some of those directors work with other actors and many of them have not been able to repeat their earlier success and that is because of the Aamir factor. Somewhere along the line, Aamir lost that touch and went for soulless commercial cinema while earlier even with a commercial movie like Ghajini, he used to make sure that it had a heart and a soul.
Aamir had taken training from the Director and Writer of the movie while acting. HE KNOWS THE EMOTION OF THE CHARACTER. This is a MOVIE song and Amir has to act on it. No one will ever pay attention to Benny. So amir has to make sure he is singing it.
If you notice, Aamir doesn't say anything about A.R. Rahman's melody. He is only directing the emotion of the singing, which is a strength that Aamir and Rahman both share. You can't imagine Aamir to sit quietly when the emotion is wrong.
Did anyone notice that the emphasis on the words in this version is different final version... Here it is "Kismat pe aye na yakeen" whereas in the final version it is "Keesmat pe aaye na yakeen" Kismat is streched to sound keesmat... Genius !
