I Hate These Stupid LED Street Lights

  • These garbage LED street lights are starting to appear everywhere recently, replacing the old, reliable, high-quality high pressure sodium lights that have illuminated the streets faithfully for the last several decades. These LED fixtures have many shortcomings which result in inferior illumination, insignificant changes in efficiency, and in some cases, hazardous limited visibility conditions.

    The current LED streetlights are horrible, I see so many dead flickering or purple ones and the ones that do work are super obnoxious at night while you are trying to sleep! Not to mention they create way more light pollution than the old sodium lamps. The only reasonable LEDs are the yellow ones but those are rare.

    Thanks for making this video. My city installed these super bright leds and have totally ruined the night here. I used to love driving at night around town, but its just hideous. It’s like trying to avoid looking at a series of welding arcs while driving through town.

      We don't have any LED streetlights in our area, but when I visited an area that did, I realized just how much better our area's softer-on-the-eyes high pressure sodium lights are. The LEDs are harsh, blinding, and just plain ugly light.

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  6 месяцев назад +1

      There was still one other freeway around here that had the sodium lights, I used to use that road specifically at night when going almost anywhere in that direction. It just got changed a month or two ago. Now I avoid it at all costs, it's blinding in good conditions and full of glare in bad ones like rain.

    I agree 100%. I absolutely hate them. They've destroyed our street such that I can hardly enjoy going out for an evening walk anymore. I have to wear sunglasses and a brimmed hat. If you are driving and momentarily look up at one you will go temporarily blind. How safe is that? They have no lens to diffuse the light, just a bank of bare LEDs. It also made no sense that in my city it was deemed very important to blow 10 million dollars on they're (very rapid) installation, especially considering there's supposed to be a pandemic underway. I'd wager that their even weaponized. Anyway thanks for this post, I share the same sentiment about those horrid things.

      @JordanU  6 месяцев назад +2

      I find I often have to drive with the sun visor down at night, just to shield the harsh glare from these things. The optics, or lack thereof, is one of the huge failure points with them.
      If you think wasting 10 million dollars was bad, just wait 3 or 5 years from now when another 10 million has to be spent to replace all the ones that failed... There's no savings to be had when using cheap garbage fixtures.

    • @Pheanixs
      @Pheanixs 5 месяцев назад +2

      Yes it is absolutely destroying any ambiance in the city at all at night. You can absolutely forget about going out for a nice evening walk anymore. I saw a post on Kitsilano Neighborhood site about how it will affect the moth population. This will put an imbalance in the ecosystem. Even during the day I can't enjoy walking down the street because when the cars come past the bright LED light is blinding. And there is also the massive amounts of radiation coming off of these lights, both the street lights and the car lights. Driving at night is virtually impossible for me now, I have purchased four different pairs of night driving sunglasses and these LED beams just come right through. This is affecting the population as a whole yet probably 12 people sitting around a table in government made this horrific decision. What I'd like to know is how we can fight this? It's almost like there needs to be a class action lawsuit. Thank you for your input.

    New poles? SERIOUSLY? What a waste! The old poles were just fine. Why on earth would they use new poles, let alone INFERIOR poles!
    My town is still 90% HPS thankfully, though some LEDs have been slowly creeping in. There is a decently-sized section of my neighborhood that has LED street lights, and it’s actually the exact opposite of your situation. They are mounted two per pole with poles spaced just about every two feet! It’s WAY too bright for a neighborhood! It doesn’t help that they are all 4000K!!! I couldn’t even imagine what life is like for the poor people who have to put up with that much light spilling through their windows every night! I’m sure at least a few may had even enjoyed having the HPS light coming through as a nightlight, but now they have to put up blackout curtains in order to keep the glaring cool white light out of their bedrooms! Thankfully, I live in the part of the neighborhood that is still lit by sparsely-spaced HPS NEMA heads and cobra heads that don’t even shine on the street. It sure isn’t the best street lighting situation, but it sure is better than the LED situation that dozens of unlucky neighbors have to deal with!!!
    And of course, there’s the issue of replaceability! The problem with integrating LED light fixtures is that when they burn out, you are forced to replace the whole thing! At the rate that those things fail, that is a huge waste of housing materials that could easily last many decades longer than the LED parts can! I can’t believe anyone could deem that integrated garbage “green.”

    Yup, the majority of LED roadway fixtures out there are very cheaply made and have poor quality optics. It’s a no brainer why cities go with a cheaper fixture, where they think we got an inexpensive crap quality fixture that is going to save us millions of $’s over the years in energy costs, it’s a win-win situation!
    It’s too bad these cheaply made fixtures are giving LED roadway fixtures a bad rap. A properly designed LED fixture would light a roadway evenly and would not produce so much glare. There are various beam spreads for all roadway fixtures, and the chosen fixtures may be the incorrect type for the pole spacing and height. If these cities specified a warmer color temperature (2700 to 3000K) they would be less annoying. Go back 40 or more years when HPS was replacing MV, everybody hated HPS, but over the years, people just got used to them. LED technology is still in its infancy and just needs to grow up.

  • @WalterKnox
    @WalterKnox Год назад +6

    Luckily, in my "neighborhood", we still have the old HPS lights. There is one right at the end of my driveway, I think the bulb in it is nearing 10 years old at this point and it still works fine. Gives a nice even orange light to everything. The main road right at the end of the "neighborhood" and the neighborhood across from us has the LED junk, and they are constantly flickering and turning purple, and give a narrow beam of harsh blue light. I worry that they may soon put them in our neighborhood, if that is the case I am disconnecting the damn thing.
    At the other house, which is on a main road (pretty much), they put in LED streetlights about 3 years ago, and they kept failing in a variety of ways, now there is a mixture of HPS and LED lights on that road, because when the LEDs crap out, they are putting HPS lights back in their place. I guess they got tired of replacing them every few months.

The only place that has LEDs nearby is a freeway and those lights have also started flashing off/on or turned purple, and most of the ones that didn't burned out within a year or two.

    My city installed LEDs a few years ago. They’ve been relatively problem free and light up the area underneath them just fine, but that’s the issue… underneath them. They are extremely directional units, so instead of throwing the light in a cone shape, it’s like a very narrow rectangle of light. I think they could be improved if the units were almost ‘U’-shaped, so they could throw light in more directions. Other than that, I honestly don’t mind the ones local to me.

    • @JordanU

    The one thing I hate about LEDs is that they are too bright. I hate it.
    That's for one, I favor incandescent Christmas lights over LED Christmas lights because LEDs flicker and it's difficult yet painful to find replacement bulbs.
    The LED light bulbs can actually cause interference with wireless receivers like garage door openers and therefore incandescents are highly recommended.
    I do agree that the LED headlights are too bright. Sometimes I think that person has their high beams on. It's blinding to those on the opposite side of the road and can cause a major accident.
    And LED street lights now taking over and not covering or brightening up the road? Oh, it's supposed to help save the planet. So I guess us humans not being able to see at night while on the road is no longer important. So sad. What a cheap world we live in nowadays.

I believe they’re made by GE or any reputable company. I will stay away from company’s that are unreliable. However, I still prefer those high pressure sodium lights, metal halide, mercury vapor, and low pressure sodium street lights because I find them more interesting than those LED fixtures. I 💯 agree with everything your saying and complaints about the LED street light. Me personally I don't have a problem with LED lamps in of themselves, i personally use LED all around my house with the exception of my refrigerator/oven lamp, my 14.5/16.3/ 27 inch lava lamps which use a 25, 40 and 100 watt incandescent respectively. And I have a 250 watt heat lamp in the bathroom on a 60 minute timer switch (very cozy stepping out of the shower on a cold day😊) and a 150 watt metal halide floodlight in my backyard that a previous owner had installed, which I don't turn on very often and is used for no more than a couple hours at a time when I need some extra light outside. If they'd given more thought into the design of LED street lights including the beam spread, color temperature, such as 2000-2100K to mimic an HPS lamp, to no higher than 3500-4000K, mimicking a metal halide I'd have no problem with them replacing the HPS (or metal halide) streetlights that we've known and loved for decades.
    Since thermal management is a bigger problem with higher output LED lighting and shortens their life significantly, an adequate cooling system is a must, and I think many cheaper LED lamps are driven very hard to give the most light per watt at the lowest possible cost while sacrificing quality and life expectancy , sort of like a photoflood incandescent.

    Good evening Jordan. My name is Mike but I go by the name Big Black Scary Mikester (a pun on a fictional creature from an early episode of South Park called Big Black Scary Monster) and I found this video after watching a similar one revolving around this issue.
    I live in the Chicago area and I can tell you right now, the exact same thing is happening to the Eden’s Expressway right now. The old sodium lights are still there but now these new LED fixtures are literally right next to them and where they aren’t installed yet, I see the stumps on the shoulders.
    Just last week, I drove on this freeway and the lights were actually on and they are AWFUL! I feel such a sick feeling knowing that the homely light is on the verge of being replaced with dystopian glaring blue-white LED fixtures. I now plan on avoiding this freeway now at night. They feel like arc welding torches right above my head.
    Why do we allow this to keep happening? These lights do a terrible job illuminating the streets and the glare is absolutely awful, even for my 41 year old eyes! Why are they not covered by frosted lenses and why isn’t there any glare control being implemented?
    These lights do damage not just to the nighttime environment but the bright blue white light is known to damage the retina, even in younger people. These are the same lights that blast out from oncoming car headlights and blind you.
    Seriously, there needs to be some sort of investigation and even a class action lawsuit brought against the lighting industry and engineering firms for allowing the proliferation of this awful horrible light into our nighttime environment.
    One doesn’t have to be even remotely an environmentalist to understand how awful and dangerous this lighting is for both our physical and psychological health.
    Physically, it assaults the eyes and makes it very hazardous to drive at night, even for young people. It disrupts melatonin production as the blue white light imitates daylight and tricks the brain into thinking it’s daytime and it results in poor quality sleep and a myriad of subsequent health problems down the road.
    Psychologically, this lighting also creates a very hostile and unwelcoming environment that is distressing and makes one feel like they’re wandering through a high security military facility or a prison yard. That and/or a dystopian sci-fi environment and it could lead to depression, anxiety, and it has even been suggested that harsh blue white LED lighting can even lead to increased anti social behavior.
    I mean, if you take a nighttime environment, urban, suburban, or rural, and you blast it with lighting that is brighter and colder than police helicopter searchlights, you can expect decreasing mental wellbeing. I already avoid neighborhoods lit this way and I’m running out of areas to enjoy walking in. I hate it and wish there was some way to reverse this.
    I feel sad knowing that upcoming generations of kids and young adults will only know harsh white lighting when going outside at night. They may never know how romantic nights actually are and can be again.
    I see these horrible glaring lights on private businesses and they are absolutely horrific and they blast into nearby homes similar to police searchlights.
    There needs to be something done to reverse this horrible trend and to create a market for nicer romantic lighting to be restored in our society again. Ive actually seen LED light fixtures and lights that believe it or not, are actually very nice and would be excellent replacements for HPS lights in urban and rural areas. We need to somehow get these kinds of lights introduced and to displace the awful harsh white lights from our society and get these bright blue white lights BANNED from outdoor settings, outside of specific temporary purposes such as outdoor concerts, sporting events, emergency searches/evacuation situations, and construction zones.
    How is this harsh white lighting environmentally friendly, when it lights everything to look like a security yard in a bad outtake of a Halo video game or a hostile police search? How is harsh white light even remotely good for anything at all?
    Good luck to all trying to change this. We desperately need some positive news soon. I’m already tired of these awful lights every time I go out the door.

      YES, HPS contains mercury, yes they are based on very old technology but LEDs themselves also contain equally nasty toxic materials as well. YES they have limited lifespan though still far better than lousy incandescent bulbs but why should we be subjected to such glaring assault on our eyes?
      How are we supposed to pay attention to the road in front of us, when our eyes are being assaulted (or at least annoyed) by such glaring light? How are we making our roads safer when oncoming headlights blast such dangerous blue-white light right in our faces? To add insult to injury, these same LED-car headlights’ blue-white glaring light is irritating and even dangerous DURING THE DAY!
      That’s right, I’ve had times where even with sunlight overhead, which requires the usual precautions, these awful car headlights have such obnoxious, dangerous glare that they still bother me, during the fucking daytime!
      Seriously, there needs to be some kind of pushback against this kind of dangerous harsh blue white lighting in our society. This is the same kind of lighting that is suitable for helicopter searchlights during police pursuits, or emergency rescue operations at night.
      Businesses that have this kind of ultrabright blue white LED lighting need to be fined if they don’t remove it, or even better, given extra incentives to change them to warmer, softer lighting.

    I wouldn’t mind LED street lighting if the lanterns weren’t poorly designed and had good optical control with minimised glare. Sadly, most councils go for the quantity over quality approach and opt for the cheapest LED lanterns available at the time. Also, I’m really not a huge fan of the 4000K colour temperature that is widespread throughout the UK, they give the roads a cold and uninviting appearance, not to mention the environmental impacts they have. I would’ve preferred it if they opted for 3000K or even 2700K instead. This is why I prefer SOX, HPS and CMH for street lighting.
