  • The worlds last remaining Northwest Airlines 747 still parked where she made her final flight in 2002.
Although I have posted several videos already, I want to give each aircraft here at Maxton their own video to share the information and history behind each of the aircraft!
This Northwest 747 is truly a marvel of aviation and will forever remain the Queen of the Skies!
Note: for anyone wanting to “correct me” on saying this is a 747-200 instead of a 100, do a quick google search of the registration and tell me what aircraft you see. Thanks 😁

A couple of thoughts... returning from a tour of duty in Vietnam (August 71) I flew on a Northwest 747 from Seattle (SEA-TAC) to Chicago. It was a treat to fly on that new and elegant 747. Remember that flight very well.
This plane was built in 1970 and retired in 2002. That's 32 years of service, a long time and a lot of flying hours I imagine. But today, somewhere in the world, there are Douglas DC-3s which were built in the early 1940s (~ 80 years or so) and still in operation and doing business. When I was in the USAF we use to say that when they flew the last jet to the boneyard the crew would fly back home on a C-47 (DC-3).

WOW She served 32 years. Out of College worked for Boeing as a structures engineer in the mid 80's at Boeing. They were making the B747-300. I worked on the B767 and B747-400 programs and B777. I later through flying outside of work, earning all my ratings, Inst, Com, CFI-II-ME and ATP turbojet, went into training department and taught pilots from all over the world in the simulator including yhe B747-400. The B747-400 is an amazing aircraft. I left Boeing to fly for airlines, flew most contemporary Boeing Jets B737, 757 and B767 but never got to fly the B747 on the line. I worked with many of the original B747-100 Engineers. These were the who's-who of aviation engineers in mid late 20th century. Boeing sucked in talent from all over in the late 60's and 70's. These engineers worked on some amazing military and civilian planes and space/defense inside and outside Boeing. Learned a lot.

Every time I see one of these Northwest Airlines 747s, I am reminded of the first international flights I took as a young man in 2003. I rode NWA 747s from MSP to NRT and NRT to BKK. At BKK, we deplaned onto the tarmac, giving me a sense of how enormous these birds were as we walked away and boarded busses to the airport concourse. I will never forget those flights and get to return to BKK this summer with my older daughter and a group from her school. While the 747s are gone, my love of air travel remains strong and I’m excited to share it with my firstborn.
I’m sure I flew them domestically also, pretty sure both MSP to MEM on the second leg of my first flying journey in 1999. Then again from MSP to DET on our honeymoon in 2004. Those two domestic flights I’m only 90% certain were 747s.

I remember like yesterday what the cumulus clouds looked like at 38,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean. It was amazing and the cloud build just went on forever and ever they were much lower than we were, but it was still an amazing site. I wish I had been a little bit older. I would’ve brought a camera and taking some pictures back to end everything was analog.
This was before the 400s came in. I even got to fly in the DC 10. It might have been an L1011 it was on Freddy Lakers Airline and I was too young to remember exactly what type of equipment it was. Night flight and all I Dont remember that flight as much as the 747,S . Those were unforgettable.

I am very familiar with the Laurinburg-Maxton airport. Most locals refer to it as simply the Maxton airport. I have driven by it and around it many times. It is way out in the middle of a rural area with a great old runway that can easily handle planes of this size. They respectfully "disassemble" many retired aircrafts there. It's a very interesting place.

@@pigup2 I have never tried walk on to the property but everything can be easily seen through the chain-link fence that surrounds the property along Airport road. I have seen some of the planes are being disassembled as close as 100 yards from the road and some parked even closer. You can see them easily from your car.

That’s awesome that you live so close to Maxton! For the past few months I’ve been somewhat anxious to know the current status of the Northwest DC10 and the MyTravel 757. I filmed these videos on January 5 and the airport has certainly had many changes since then. I’m hoping that the DC10 is still somewhat in tact, but there’s a possibility it’s completely gone by now. And I saw that a little over a month ago the MyTravel 757 was moved to an area in front of the Korean A300 and I was worried that the airport may be scrapping it. Is there any way you could drive around Maxton and check on the status of the aircraft?

6603 was one of three -100’s Northwest Airlines performed an ARMAR Project on in 1990. Every service bulletin was accomplished in one huge overhaul visit in Minneapolis. She had the best fuel burn of all -100’s in the fleet after that project. 6601 and 6608 were the other two aircraft. You can visit the nose section of 6601 at the Smithsonian in Washington DC. Northwest Airlines had 10 -100’s 6601-6610 if I recall correctly 6611 and on were -200’s. 6611 was the first -200 built I believe although I could be wrong. All Northwest 747’s used the JT9D for power. The -400 fleet used the PW4000 series motor.

That could be the first plane I was ever on when I was 19 years old. Northwest 747 - San Francisco to Boston… at one point the pilot said over the PA “folks, if you take a look out of the right side you’ll see the Mississippi River …so most of us tried to peer over…and seconds later the plane jerked up and left so hard, all of us on the right side were shoved back into our seats. This being my first light, I didn’t think much of it. I do remember the looks on peoples faces. I’ve also never felt that again in the 40 years since. Captain did a good job of keeping us from a near hit probably. : ) Hopefully he remembered to not get up and look at the Mississippi himself the next time.

In the 1980's-90's my boyfriend and I would park by the runways at SFO and watch planes take off. Back then you could climb over the fence if you wanted.. After 9/11 (or maybe before, I forget) they closed the road that ran behind the airport that had small parking bays where you could make out and watch the airplanes. Man that was great. I had the cops walk up to our car's steamed up windows and tell us to sit up straight in our seats, or else move on.
