We picked up our MG5 late March. After 1800 miles we are absolutely loving it

After seeing all the MG4 reviews and adverts, I booked a test drive. When I got to the showroom, I saw the MG5 facelift and was impressed. I didn’t bother with the MG4 test drive, instead I tested an MG5. I liked it straight away and ended up buying one with 475 miles on the clock for £25900. Too good to resist. Thanks for the great review.

I got the original MG5 nearly 3 years ago. It was pre registered but had zero mileage on it. It cost me £19.5k so was affordable as an EV. It’s been brilliant and so cheap to run. It may not be worth much now but I’m not selling it so who cares. Can’t recommend it enough. I could never have afforded anything more expensive and I can transport the dog in the boot. So it may be basic but it does 5he job

Take a look at used prices for MG5s. While they have depreciated quite a bit recently, like many EVs, including Tesla Model 3s, prices are still relatively strong for the MG5. Less depreciation than most as a percentage, and of course even fewer lost pounds. The pre-facelift MG5 also seems to fetch a significant premium over its equivalent ZS EV. And I would think depreciation will now slow down considerably. You got yours so cheaply in the first place, it's probably worth more than you think. And, as you say, it's also been cheap to run.

Bought new model mg5 trophy very pleased with it. Couple of points, i think, it does have a battery heaterit's buried in the car set ip .menu
It does have mute button it's on left steering wheel controls.
Biggest gripe? If you have android phone connected via blue tooth and the phone gets a notification the DAB radio switches off and is a nightmare to switch on again. Software update needed
Very good car traded in non ulez volvo xc70 and to be fair MG is a good alternative.

      @DefinitelyNotAGuru  Год назад +1

Yes, the battery heater is not the same as a heat pump though and I was referrign to the lack of mute button on the dash rather than the wheel. Great car though.

Great video... I drove the MG5 when it was released. But I didn't get it at the time as the finance wasn't good....but they have now improved the finance. Thus, I was reconsidering.... Thanks to the video, I have now learnt there is no heat pump!! The heat pump and the 500kg towing are the deal-breakers for me.

Had this car 2 months. 1st electric car, just amazed by it. Wish it had a better reverse camera and the ISO fix were not between the seats but more accessible.

I don't think the camera is too bad (there are far worse out there actually). I see your point about Isofix.

Another very helpful review, thanks Jim. Well done MG, this looks like a real step up in quality, at a very fair price. I do feel though that not at least offering a heat pump is a serious omission which for some buyers will mark the car down.

Not mind-blowing BUT a thumbs up to MG for keep producing ELECTRIC ESTATES, something quite rare this days. I’d love to see other manufacturers doing the same instead focusing only on MPV’s, SUV’s etc…you can't beat the comfort and the practicality of an estate car compare to an SUV!

Test drove the MG4 xPower (LOVE the name!) recently and was pretty impressed in most areas!
Can you please do a back to back with say a GV70 (electric)? I'd love to see that!

I’ve done a GV70 review already, unfortunately I’m not exactly a household name so I get the cars when I get them and am thankful for it 😁
      Thanks for watching bud

I am considering an MG5 at the moment. I will be dependent on public charging as I don't have the right property to install a home charger. The price per kwh has rocketed in the past 3 years and these are now making the switch less economical and the cost of the 235 mile range is now as bad as petrol. Assuming a 50kw hour charge the price on local public charging in North Wales is now about £40 (or 80p per Kwh )for around 200 miles. I have at present an E class Mercedes which gets about 30mpg on a run and 27mpg combined. So the same miles about 7 gallons at £5.22 per gallon , more or less.
I would love a new electric and have been to test one but the running cost of fuel is an impediment. That cannot be good for the environment.😪

I think it will be one a chore and expensive. I have an EV but also have a home charger, I don’t think id want one without the other. I’ve done a video on this subject.

Of course, the acid test is how well it works with my family...my bet is that it won't 🫣😳.

Mainly to note how popular the MG5 is. Compare used prices of pre-facelift MG5s vs pre-facelift ZS EVs. It seems to me that the MG5 carries about a three grand premium in the used market, despite the ZS EV having the supposedly preferred SUV styling. I know pre-facelift the MG5 had 33% more range than the ZS EV, but it still suggests to me that there are definitely plenty of people who prefer an estate car over a crossover.
I don't understand Volvo. Let's face it, Audi has done very well out of its estate car offerings, not least its RS Avants. And the new M3 Touring is also very popular, and an M5 Touring is coming because of stated demand. So, it very much seems to me that it's complete and utter bs that estate cars are out of fashion. Quite the contrary, they seem considered quite cool. I'm not saying the MG5 is cool. And I'm not saying that SUVs aren't cool. I have come to appreciate the SUV. Just as I have come to appreciate the EV. If you can/could charge at home, and you can afford an EV, I reckon they make a lot of sense for urban transport. And IMO, the MG5 would make a lot of sense for most families that aren't badge snobs. It's ride is more compliant than most, too.
There are for sure better cars, and the MG5 is no longer particularly cheap. But it's currently the only EV estate. It's arguably the right size for the UK. And if you spec up any VAG EV with the options that come standard on the MG EVs you'll see that they're really 25% more expensive. And VW quality isn't what it used to be. Haven't driven or even been in the facelift MG5, but I have some experience with the pre-facelift car, and to me it seemed quite a decent EV and certainly better than the ID3. The facelift looks better, but I only see a big difference in the front-end styling. And I assume it drives and rides the same. I'd seriously consider one as a family runabout.

Holding on to my 7 seater diesel and tiny petrol city car for as long as possible - until people start to see sense and realise that SUVs are just a disaster for fuel economy or range in an EV. I’m interested in EV’s but they really need to work on lowering the battery weight.

That's on it's way via solid state battery technology. Physically smaller and lighter battery packs, with greater energy density (more range) plus quicker charge times. Could be another 2 years I reckon.....

I the you review style is good, however I do have a few issues with some of your statements which i feel are misleading to any potential owner. 'a lot more car for the money'....but also a lot more problems Im afraid. Was an MG owner for 12 months...a mistake I won't be making again. The technology is dangerous, no idea how it gets a 5 star NCAP especially the LKA (owners now calling that Lane KILL assist), and the after sales 'service' is by far the worse I've ever experienced...and that's saying some as I once owned several Landrovers. And please stop making silly quotes like 'it's better quality than an Audi'...that's just nonsense. My Wife has the new VW Golf...quite possibly one of the worst versions of the Golf ever...but it wipes the floor with the MG for quality...oh and it cost less than my MG and after a years ownership her car having paid £27k for it is now worth £21k, my MG, paid £35.4k for it...sold it for £19k but was offered £16k by Motorway.

Ok - I get a car for a week usually, I drive it as much as I can and give you my honest opinion on it. If you have a different one after months or years of ownership I would not be surprised. The lane keep assist on the MG4 I recently reviewed tried to kill me on the day it went back. It failed.
