The pen size is measured by the diameter. There is a BIG difference in terms of area of the balls used in the pens. A .7mm tip refers to a .35mm radius and a 1.6mm tip refers to a .8mm radius. Using just regular geometry the area of the gel pen tip is only 19% that of the ballpoint. Ballpoints have to be large because you are not actually using the entire diameter of the ball, but rather a smaller diameter closer to the "pole" of the ball(which is what I call the part of the ball that makes contact with the paper). Gel pens tend to use much more of their diameter tips when writing so they don't have to use as large of a ball tip.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment Tony. That makes a lot of sense!

Yeah I’ve found that as well. If you look, a .7mm gel pen usually makes the same line a 1 mm ballpoint would.

What a coincidence that you uploaded this when you did. I’ve spent the past week looking for Gelocity reviews, and was surprised at how little I was able to find (especially recent ones). Thanks as always for the thorough reviews! That dark blue in the Velocity looks great btw 👍🏽

I cannot think of a real reason to prefer Energel over the Gelocity. Both are equally smooth and vibrant, neither are really waterproof and the Gelocity is half the price, yet for some reason I still find myself gravitating to the Energel over the Gelocity

The velocity is my favorite pen to use for school for nonstop class notes. As a lefty, it does smear on my pinky, but it writes so smoothly I can't give it up. I didn't use to like big ballpoint pens but I really like this one. And I'm too picky when it comes to pens (the wrong size or grip makes my handwriting messier) so it's still the only pen I use since I first tried it 2 years ago. Gonna watch more of your vids to see what pens I'm missing out on!

Actually, the gel-ocity will not take a G2 refill. The stock catridges are slightly thinner than a conventional G2. Although, I think it holds the same amount of ink as a G2. My guess was they made the refill thinner to cut costs.

5:41 - I don't know if it's an optical illusion or it's just me.. It seems like *Diffuser* mechanism just below the nib inside the refill of the Gelocity ? 😲
Simply put, a *Nozzle* is used to increase the *Speed* of the fluid and on the contrary, *Diffuser* is used to increase the *Pressure* of the fluid passing through.
From Engineering perspective, it's piquing my curiosity 😅

I was able to shorten the refill from a velocity pen and installed it in a Zebra 701. It made for a nice smooth writing pen.

I must try it. I'm a big fan of fountain pens but it's not comfortable for my work, so Gel pen is my second choice. I've used Energel before but I don't like its colour. I hope Gelocity would be better.

If the gel refill for the Gelocity is the same as the refill for a Bic "for Her" I have here, that refill fits in both the Pilot g2 I have and my Energel Alloy.
Strangely, I dug out a different "for her" gel pen I have and the refill for that one seems to be a tiny bit shorter than the one in the other pen and doesn't fit ANY of the pens properly, including the one it came with. It doesn't come out quite as far as it should. It still works but it looks weird. I've never used that pen so I'd never noticed before. Odd.

I still have 8 double packs of Bic Velocity 1.6 size black. The office depot had them as a back to school special at 50 cents each pack around 6 years ago. I don't even know if they are still good, and don't ask me why I bought them. I never opened up not even one package.

@Voltaic Fire I'm a lefty but learned to write with my right hand early on, on my mother's recommendation especially because of the smudging issue. Where I grew up, kids had to write with fountain pens at school, so it was probably a good thing. Once I was allowed ballpoint pens when I went to high school in California for a year, I really got to like ballpoint pens. Now as an adult, I do prefer ballpoints. It's just a smoother experience for me.
