The emotional inflections in Roger Hodgson's voice in this song elevate it to greatness. There is a mix of melancholy that reaches it's climax with the line, "Oh, no... please, no... don't let the curtain fall..." Whereas other singers might sing the lines, Roger emotes them.

While everyone in the band contributes well, over the years I’ve really grown to appreciate John Helliwell’s contributions on woodwinds. He does more than just that, but the little sax and clarinet parts are just the cherry on top of what is already a first class dessert.

I can still listen to Crime, Crisis and Quietest Moments and they are still just as stirring now as when I had the 8-tracks. These albums don’t get dated, they are true classics. The perfect juxtaposition of Roger’s British pop sensibilities combined with Rick’s love of American and jazz styles. It all worked so well until things began going off the rails, starting with Breakfast.

You're starting to get caught in the trap. It's hard to give certain songs their due because most good prog albums need to be taken as a whole. Since you don't really react to albums and you react to individual songs you're forced to say things like 'it was a good one.' The album has a certain flow that Supertramp was aiming for and each song has its part in that flow. That means that not every song taken by itself would be a killer song - but every 'movement' (song) on the album is essential to the meaning, feel and function of what Supertramp was trying to achieve with the album. Put simply - the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. These songs will always seem grander listened to in album context rather than listened to individually on random peoples playlists.

I agree. Concept albums work much better listened in one sitting or if divided is necessary at least stay with one album start to finish. If you are thinking about Jethro Tull-Thick As A Brick understand that is one song as well as A Passion Play.

In fairness, some rock and pop and even prog rock albums are simply a collection of songs that could have been released individually and can be approached that way. And while my memory and info may be faulty (but not for reasons of substances), I think that it was The Who, The Beatles, The Beach Boys and The Kinks who released 'concept' albums in the 1960s, whether themed as a whole, or with a particular sound that made them cohere. While some were individually great, the songs on those albums might not carry the same weight. For a prog rock example, imagine listening to songs from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway out of context. Not that they make simple or complete sense even in context, but there is a story and the music generally flows together... Hopefully, you get the idea.
And no need to brush up your Shakespeare, if you want to extend the analogy of "All the world's a stage,/ and all the men and women merely players; they have their exits and their entrances..." That example from As You Like It is one of many scattered through all his plays where the playwright uses a character on the stage to tell the audience watching the play that life is like a play on the stage. Another famous example of that metaphoric analogy, from the Scottish play, "Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player/ That struts and frets his hour upon the stage/ And then is heard no more." Figure out that puzzle! Similar puzzle to Shakespeare having only male actors present a play where a man dresses as a female character in the play who, as part of the plot, then disguises "herself" as a man and gets caught in a love triangle with another "woman" (played by a man)... Okay, maybe too much for a rock song, but I think that is the 'stage' allusion.

I love this one, too. Really theatrical, and Rick gets to stretch his inner Gershwin, a bit - especially with the reeds and strings. It sets up the title track, so well, after the wonderfully frantic pace of Rudy.
Next, after Justin wraps up Crime, we gotta move on to Crisis? What Crisis? One sets up the other...I love Crisis - it is a deep cut album. When it’s soft, it’s really soft. When it rocks/swings (like most of Rick’s songs), it is so good. Nothing super flashy, just everything in the right place.

I completely forgot how much I love this song. Thanks for bringing me back!
The album has a wonderful sense of timing and each track is perfectly positioned to lead to the next... and it makes the entire experience of listening to this album pure joy. (AND they have two better albums to follow!)
If your'e going to react to Supertramp after this album, Crisis What Crisis (Soapbox Opera, The Meaning, Easy Does It / Sister Moonshine), and "Even In The Quietest Moments" (Give A Little Bit, Babaji, Even In The Quietest Moments, and, of course, Fool's Overture) would be great places to visit.
Finally.. some other groups / songs I'd love you to react to:
MIKE OLDFIELD - Tubular Bells (It's long, but it's legendary... One album two songs)
THE CHAMELEONS - Here Today (amazing band and their haunting song about the death of John Lennon)
XTC - Senses Working Overtime, Wrapped In Grey, Dear God, or Green Man (XTC are the best band since the Beatles for writing beautifully catchy, intelligent symphonic pop songs)
    Cheers!

Good morning, y'all! What a nice way to start the day.
As I liked and commented on another comment, watching Justin's facial reactions and then hearing his insight in to new-to-him music is why I'm here.
    On to this song...
Supertramp was big in my youth, but while I listened to and enjoyed their hits, I never invested in their albums, so this was a first listen for me as well. I nearly jumped out of my seat when Justin said something along the lines of with a tiny shift, he could get a Genesis feel from this one. That's pretty much exactly what I was thinking, that I could easily see this being a song by Genesis with Gabriel prior to The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Fantastic insight, Justin!
I'm still working my way through the channel from oldest to newest, except for the new daily uploads. So, I haven't heard any of the rest of this album yet. You got me anticipating getting to Rudy, though.

JP: Dougie Thompson and Bob Siebenberg were one of the more unheralded rhythm sections from the 70s era. if you listen to Siebenberg's drumming, you can hear that he had an extensive background in rudemental playing, especially his work on the snare. The fact they were overlooked was that they weren't overly aggressive, or showy. But , they did the most important thing that they could do; they played FOR the song. Not a fill out of place. Dougie Thompson's note slurs on the end section of SCHOOL lift that song to another level, and combined with the off beat cymbal crashes, it really drives that section of the song. There's so much more I could say about them , but you've probably got that covered.

A lot of fans say it's too "pop" but a lot of the critics forget that the songs are really good, and pop-qualities don't make music inherently better or worse. Breakfast has some of my favorite individual songs, like "Goodbye Stranger", "Logical Song", "Long Way Home", and "Nervous Wreck". It's less cohesive of an album than "Crime" but has higher highs IMO.

I’ve always thought this song was about Jesus Christ. There are many lines that support it. The idea being that if everyone was listening, Christ would not have had to die. The verses about “how do you plead, an actor indeed” would be referring to Judas. The line “you don’t know what you’ve done, the finale’s begun” really reminds me of a bible verse, although I can’t say exactly what it is. Also, “we tried to sing of love, before the stage fell apart”

I do watch the video, to catch your reaction to some moments I know will trigger one. Another youtuber I watch reactions of, Dean Wolfe, adds occasional subtitles saying how a particular moment or element of the song makes him feel. It's a nice touch for the viewer, if you're looking for ideas.

I love this song, though I would have liked it to be 2 minutes longer with a full crescendo at the end, it would then have been a full Genesis-esh type of song. Saying so when listening to “Rudy”, “If Everyone Was Listening” and “Crime of The Century” together in a row, it is perfect long. Standing alone it is to short missing a final portion. Bob Siebergen’s drumming here is so tasteful in my view and this continues on Crime of The Century. Some people like the dramatic drumming he builds in the songs, other not so much.

@jaybird - Just got back from my fishing trip targeting walleye. I caught a 25lbs Sheepshead. However, the coolest story was the one that got away. I was trolling along and hooked onto a 50lbs or more Sheepshead. Before I get into my 10 sec battle, I need to say my drag was on tight, and with all my strength I couldn't pull line from the reel. So I'm trolling and using a spoon spinner with a single hook, when all off a sudden my rod bent like the McDonalds arch. Before I could get both hands on the rod, since I was manually steering the boat, the fish took off and was pulling line. I went to reach for my drag to loosen it (didn't want to break my rod) and before I knew it the fish was off. I reeled in and the hook had straighten out from the force/strength of the fish. After cursing and swearing, and yelling "Oh My God" that was huge, I noticed my weight was missing. The weight was connect to a metal ring with 3 bends. I inspected the ring and there was just one bend. The fish straighten out the metal ring. That was a first for me. I've caught some big fish in my time but never has a fish straightened a metal ring. Lesson of the day, always check your drag.

@@jaybird4093 This was our annual family fishing trip with my brother and friends. Since most golf, I decided to tag along this year. This is my 3rd time playing golf ever, but I've gone to a driving range up to around 10 times. I played hockey and baseball and I think that helps with hand eye coordination, so when I drive off the T, I can smash the ball. When i was younger I could get 250 to 300 yards consistently and straight as an arrow. So when I mentioned this the night before golf, they laughed at me. Boy did I show them on golf day. I kicked ass and left them shaking their heads. Don't get me wrong, I'm no Tiger but surprisingly I'm also no handicap, I could hold my own. Oh yeah, I will have to wait 2 to 3 years before going back to that place to get my revenge but now that I know there're some monsters in the bay, I'll be prepared.

While i agree that a lot of prog albums need to be listened to start to finish, it is also true that the really good ones can be listened to randomly....Floyd...Yes ...ELP...Porcupine Tree....VDGG....Marillion....ok that list goes on and on The really good ones don't have weak links Just convinced myself of that Ha Difference between early Genesis and pop era Genesis Few weak links on the old stuff I think in this case ,we have some not so super...tramp links "Rudy" way best so far on this LP

I always watch videos instead of just listening. I find that if I listen only, my attention is drawn by other things and then the video is talking at me like an electronic fishwife, and not to me. Anyway, it's interesting to note music's role in neuro-linguistic programming: this takes me back to the days when I was trying to pick up a lentil-eating hippie chick with a philosophical bent, and so I always assumed it was one of those obligatory climate doom songs like Crime of the Century. But listening to it now, it doesn't mention global warming(tm) at all - probably because at that time it was thought we were all going to succumb to an ice-age. Heigh ho. But I love the hard allegorical nature of the piece; it can be fitted to almost any scenario, much like a Nostradamus prediction.

LOL, what I do depends on the song. There are some like this one where I know there's no major whammy to watch out for, so I scroll the comments. I tend not to do that with Genesis epics and such, and wait until you're done listening.

  • @MrFtoudalk

About half of your reviews, I watch while the music is playing. It depends on the song I guess.
This song is alright. It doesn't do much for me, but I wouldn't turn the station if it was played on the radio. It's also not the song that comes to my mind when I think "Supertramp". But it's alright.
