in some tournaments but mostly international tournaments if you get a yellow back-to-back games then you cant play the third game
For example, a player gets a yellow card in a game, it counts for that game but also, if it is a league match, it counts also for the league and, if he gets 5 yellow cards, on 5 different matches, he gets suspended for the next match. When you see a player in the lineup with a yellow card, means that, if he sees a yellow card on that match, he will miss the next match because he already has acumulated 4 yellow cards.

so the whole thing with yellow cards is that if you get more than 2 in a game it's a red- but if you get 3 in the space of a certain amount of games then you get a 3 game suspension i believe

So it depends on the tournament! In cups like the Euros, World Cup Champions League the general rule is you will be suspended for a match if you accumulate two yellow cards over the course of for example the group stage.
In the league (Premier League, Serie A, La Liga etc.) the rule of thumb is that you’re suspended every 5th yellow card you accumulate.
If you say a yellow card next to a player before the game, then it means that the specific player is one yellow card away from a suspension!
