At the age of 56, I'm fortunate to be old enough to have watched the "Flip Wilson Show", in all it's glory, when it actually aired. All of his shows were extremely well written, positively hilarious......and PROFANITY FREE. In this day & age, good luck in finding a "prime-time" program that has those same qualities. Flip Wilson....a truly underrated "King Of Comedy".

Personally, I don’t think it is just a Black actor thing, look at all the white boys who have donned the skirt. Old school, Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis. Semi old school Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman. Newer cats, Matt Daemon, the list goes on and on. Denzel never wore one and Ima down with that.
The Flip Wilson and Carol Burnett shows were the best comedy variety shows on television. Both were fresh, hilarious, and, I agree, profanity free. It's amazing how funny the comics of the 70's and before were without profanity. Sometimes just their facial expressions and body language was hysterical without them ever saying a word.

At the end you can see the copyright date as 1973. The following year, Flip played almost exactly the same role as a pastor of a church in the all-black comedy, "Uptown Saturday Night". It's a great performance.

I thought the title song "Uptown Saturday Night" by Dobie Gray was/is one of the best title songs I've ever heard for a movie. It would make my top 20 easily.

I was at a church in Jackson, MS, when the pastor had the doors locked and would not let people leave. Brother Cleophus Robinson and Sister Josephine James were the guest singers. The reverend said they needed train fare back to California, and nobody was leaving until they got the money. My friends were members at this church and they invited me. The pastor had already called for four collections when he decided there wasn't enough money for the church and the guest singers. I know it's hard to believe but were were actually held hostage. They had deacons blocking the doors. I never visited that church agin.

I loved that as a child I could watch this program with my family and even listen to his albums, unlike all of the other comedians who had albums back then! It is such a shame that there are no longer any "prime-time" programs showing now that I would feel comfortable to sit down with my 20 month old grandson to watch!
Such a nice show. I watched it when I was a kid and it never seemed long enough...miss shows like this. Kids today have no idea. All these shows are about murders, unsolved killings, horrible. No wonder no one can sleep -- even the news makes you have nightmares. I don't watch any of it, I just read.

Flip Wilson was not only a great comedian, his show did much to bring the black and white communities together at a time when such reconciliation was needed most . His show appealed to everyone. Plus he was so damn funny.
This younger generation can only watch and wonder what it would be like to have unadulterated fun, while not offending all sorts of folks. That generation of entertainers were Solid Gold.

I remember this show love...............flip Wilson he had great performer on his show, he was a great comedian, he did not need to bleep words out because he did clean comedy, Osmond brother Jackson five every big performer been on his show, you do not find shows like flip Wilson carol Burnett shows these days, he got along and invited white performers on his show, when I would go to school the next day my class mates who are white would say to me boy is flip Wilson great, lot of unknown comedians started out from flip Wilson show and became bigger than him, I never hear him complain about that he was nice kind and appreciative about his show, it was a family show think God for you tube thank you for this segment I am strolling for more shows..
This show brings tears to my eyes because I can remember growing up when things for black people were looking up. T.V. was golden during those years. Everything on TV was wholesome. There no rap and hip-hop. Every message was positive on the radio and television. Life was simple. There were no drugs or people addicted to drugs like today. The black where I grew up in Jacksonville, Florida was very safe. Everybody was nice and friendly.
You are eiether purposely exaggerating a great deal, or you lived in a fantasy world in your mind. All these shows, if you pay close attention to them, were just leading up to the madness we are faced with today. Pre-cursers if you will. Remember the devil is very patient.
There was a lot of commandment breaking in all these shows. Flip playing Geraldine (drag), playing on false doctrine of tithing, and gambling. Look beyond the jokes and open your eyes.
I loved watching this show when I was in high school. He never used improper language and treated everyone with respect. He was fun to watch. I use his handshake today! More fun than any handshake out there. 🙃
I remember this episode had Redd Foxx (obviously), Helen Reddy and Joan Rivers. Much love for Flip. I just about wore out my 8-track of "The Devil Made Me Buy This Dress."

I was about 12 years old. We had no TV. We had to go to the neighbors house to watch tv.

The black where I grew up in Jacksonville, Florida was very safe. Everybody was nice and friendly.

I just love Flip. I watched every week.
I loved watching this show when I was in high school. He never used improper language and treated everyone with respect. He was fun to watch. I use his handshake today! More fun than any handshake out there. 🙃
