A few months ago, we went on a field trip where we saw an exhibit featuring cut paper by Picasso. One piece, a sailor getting out of a boat, looked like it was done by a four-year-old, yet it carried Picasso's genius. This inspired an idea: what if we gave our teachers great paper and crayons, and had grad students do self-portraits? About 10 years ago, we started at Carols Ninos Primary Center, where our students teach art to young kids. Children’s drawings are uncensored and not self-critical.
In Oaxaca, I teach at CASA, and students there did the same project. Both LA and Oaxacan students started with self-portraits but soon expanded to drawing their families and surroundings. The results were explosive and inspiring. Now, our goal is to bring this idea to other countries. Phase 3 of the project will be an exhibition at Art Division showcasing the work of both LA and Oaxacan students. Seeing what young children create with good materials is incredibly exciting.
