Once again ol’ CW has made my day. I can’t thank you enough for posting this. Bill’s records were my favorite thing in the late ‘70s-early ‘80s (before I had discovered his Old Home Bread commercials), and coincidentally I ended up spending a 30 year career making commercials myself and did quite a bit of original soundtracks for them along the way. Late in my career I learned Bill’s bio and had to write him a letter. I never heard back, but he passed just a year later at the age of 93. It kills me I never got to connect with the man that was a big inspiration but finding this video was a gift.
I'm glad I read your comment. I had always meant to write old CW a letter also, but never got around to it and wished I had when I heard he had passed away. But at least, by reading your comments, I'm guessing I would've never heard back from him anyway, so now I feel better about it.
I am from Sioux City and I remember when they baked the bread, the whole city would smell like fresh baked bread. My mom would go down to the outlet store and a big box of rejected cookies for three dollars. Miss those days.
My grandpa was a John Deere salesman for 47 years, and this dealership was next to sweetheart bakery and know the feeling when we would go down to visit him at work, and he would always sneak us grandkids a paper cup full mtn dew, cause we weren’t really allowed to have that when I was little
I finally went to Audubon today, I don't know why but I have been stopping at every single place that I could remember from the CW songs! I drove the Wolf Creek Pass looked for the old feed store in Pagosa Springs, drove from Durango up the canyon next to the Silverton tracks, drove by the entrance to the black bear road and drove back and forth through the tunnel where the Riverside slide flows. Yesterday I drove through Wiggins Colorado Comma I don't know why I'm doing all this but when I was such a little kid these songs were so much fun! Not to be rude but Audubon and Wiggins aren't much but everything else is absolutely fantastic! Oh yes the Nishnabotna river is not much more than a Creek in any other area😂
What a treasure of material. I never new of his work before ‘Convoy’ and lost touch with him soon after his classic. Maybe that was to be expected living in the Northeast.
Been a C. W fam for news and knew that he worked outside of music. From the bottom of my heart thank you so much posting this. I didn’t even know it existed.

I just felt like hearing Convoy again, and I wound up here. What a find! I remember hearing the Old Home fill 'er up song on WWL radio, but I didn't know it involved all this. I put this video in my favorites. Thank you very much for uploading this. Enjoyed it very much.
Absolute magic. Like a window back to a better time and an opportunity to sit down for a while with a legendary master storyteller. Thank you so much for sharing.
That was so cool. He mentioned in a conversation we had that he started with bread commercials. I was a 17 year old CB'er in Pecos, New Mexico in 1976. I lived in Pecos, New Mexico and he came through on Interstate 25 claiming to be the original Rubber Duck. I challenged that claim, and we met up at the Glorieta Baptist Conference center parking lot, because it was easily identified by its lighted steeple along I-25. I later met him by accident again when he came through the Pecos River Campground on I-25 just Northeast of Pecos and got the opportunity for a photo op with him wearing his black chicken inspector hat. I never got to see any of those photos unfortunately. In the song Four Wheel Cowboy, as promised he mentioned Glorieta and Pecos, using the lyrics "Glorieta pass like a sheet of glass" and "Peddlin down past Pecos town", based on his experiences with me and the other CB'ers that were lurking on the frequency and came out to meet him at the Glorieta Baptist Conference Center parking lot.
We went on a motorcycle ride to the Loess Hills and I was just in Pisgah yesterday. The cafe is still there (and is open for business.) Each of these commercials got better and better as they were made. So many specific little details about that area and Iowa in general were committed to song and video here. I'm grateful this whole reel made it to RUclips. Thanks!
Dad played a storm on his three finger fiddle… Love this!!! Back in 1988, my Dad and I were Jeepin’ the Black Bear Pass and someone in our group played his Black Bear Road song over the CB radio. I was 15 and already loved old country music but instantly became hooked on CW McCall’s music.
Thanks so much for sharing! I never knew there were so many ads! Great to hear the full story from Bill Fries Jr. himself. Who would have thought a bread commercial would lead to a hit song and a movie.
I grew up on 70s movies in the early 90s, so of course Duel and Convoy were on that list, and glad I found out about these catchy commercials within the past year or so.
Bloopers and Practical Jokes showed several of these ads. They often ran old commercials. The actor who played C.W. looks like someone who played J.D. in some commercials for Louisiana National Bank. I wonder if it could be the same person. My mom met him one time. There was no mention of Chip Davis. Mr. Fries did rather well with the campaign and some hit records. RIP.
Glad to hear you enjoyed. I am pretty confidant that a majority of the advertisments did appear on television in the 70s. As for the behind the scenes song I am unsure if that was aired or not. I found the ads and behind the scenes song here: bozell.com/work/old-home-bread/
If youtube ads were Old Home Bread commercials I wouldn't skip those.

I'm thankful the internet can preserve comments like this, love hearing these stories.
Rest in Peace, William Fries Jr.🙏 Thank you posting this.
Thank you for sharing. Thank you also to Bill Fries for sharing his God-given talent with the rest of us. RIP.
As a C. W. fan and Iowa boy, this is everything I’ve ever wanted

That's a great mission. Have you found the Old Home and Fill 'er Up and Keep on A-truckin' Cafe?
@thomasmartin8202 That is my last remaining mission
Going up to Colorado in a couple months. Gonna go see the Rockies (baseball) and do some tourist things. Hopefully I’ll get to see a Gallopping Goose.
Grew up in the midwest. This takes me back. Bullheads, and "warsh" instead of "wash" 😆
I just tell them that the "r" is wash is NOT silent
@@mikewatson4644 🤔😆🤣👍
I’ve always loved this guy’s work. i never knew he started in advertising.
my dad would have loved to watch this, I had no idea there was so much to this tune LONG LIVE C.W. McCall (RIP)

Been a CW McCall fan since the 70's and this is the first time I've seen this. Put a huge shine on an otherwise dull and dreary day. Thank you!

Truly wish I got to shake your hand Bill. Should have sent a letter when I could, too busy and time slips. Thanks for the stories and sleep well sir!

I loved him when I was growing up in Houston
THANK YOU for preserving this classic! 👍

This compilation/history is fantastic!!
In the Heavy Date spot, the Bruton Rd. Drive-In Theatre is shown, which was in Mesquite, TX, near Dallas.
What talent can deliver those lyrics so straightfaced like he was just talking about the weather?
Wow, this is awesome! 🍞🤠🇺🇲
Perfect 😭
This is a funny video. CW had no choice but to include Mavis mother. There are times that he uses a Southern accent. Why? Did he like the winter cold?
This is great
Mavis looks a bit like Polly Holliday aka Flo on Alice.
Outstanding ❤
Priceless
Did this air on TV, where did you find it? I love this stuff.

@@bigbluemusic4288 thanks
This man out here spitting bars. Get that bread 🍞😂
I heard the Old Home An' Filler Up and Keep On Trucking Cafe yesterday driving home. I said, "Alexa, play some C.W. McCall." Then that song played.
Decoder Ring brought me here.
This makes me happy
This is great!!!!!
