- Do your finger tips hurt from playing guitar? If so ⛔️ STOP NOW! ⛔️
One of the complaints I get most often from beginner guitar players is that they can't practice for long enough because the tip of their fingers start hurting very quickly 🥺
💡 What if I told you that there is a way to stop this INSANTLY? 💯
➡️ Not only that, the technique below will also improve your playing, speed of chord placement changes and will mean you can play for longer!
📋 First, here are some facts when it comes to finger pain from playing guitar 👇
⚠️If you haven't played in a couple of weeks, you're starting from scratch...build it up slow
⚠️electric is easier than acoustic
⚠️not all acoustics are the same - setup matters
⚠️holding down chords will hurt for a while
With that in mind - here's my top 5 tips for less painful finger tips!
✅️ press down less hard, just enough to get the note ringing out but no more
✅️use good positioning with your fretting fingers right up against the frets
✅️ play little and often, rather than for hours only once a week
✅️learn some single note melodies, not just chords
🎵 Final tip - mix it up! 🎵 Something hurting? Stop that and play something different!

You have to take into consideration not everyone has money to spend on a $1000 guitar. Cheap guitars are going to have more problems with action and what not.
Huh?
@@spenzix3720 cheap guitars wich most of us owns have a higher action than an expensive guitar wich basically means we have to press harder than normal
@@rhoo3605 than just press harder than normal…
@@spenzix3720 easy for you to say
@@asianpsychopath6969 I ha a normal guitar stop bitching and press harder
barre chords: allow me to introduce myself
😂
I'm destroying my barre finger even after following the tips, Idk what to do
😂😂

When you're a beginner you have to press hard. Not only will it help develop your strength on fingers and hand, you also learn to play chords clearly (clean sound). That's acoustic. If you want something not as harsh, then start electric.
I don't think its about pressing hard its just about playing a clear note.
Press as much as you need until you can play a clear note, then as you progress, play lighter if you can, without sacrificing the sound.
Beginners just don't have any positioning or muscle memory so pressing harder will make it easier for the note to ring, but its unnecessary unless you want a specific sound.
I play electric and play a lot of pink floyd songs so my fingers end up like that either way
Dumbest thing I ever heard. You just said use bad technique to learn good technique
I press hard as a beginner and my fingers got buffed up it doesn't hurt anymore
Hold my high actioned old acoustic 🗿🗿
Can only be done with a great guitar..
It has the same relevance for a 250€/$/£ guitar and a 1000+ €/$/£ guitar.
But if you have like 50€/$/£ guitar you're doomed any way. It's always gonna be hard to play on that and not much fun in general.
Meanwhile, even my calluses have calluses 😅
I'll persist with this method. it's a challenge with A Major, particularly using the "anchor" method, keeping the 1st finger on the 3rd string. Helpful tip in any case.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! You didn’t have to make this video so much but you did and it has helped me so much!!
Great advise but takes a long time to achieve. I do practice chords as well as notes which makes it a lot quicker to change when pressing lightly. I can’t use a plectrum because of arthritis but the thumb works just as well. Thank you Andy.
Thank you Andy..
Have been unable to practice because of this problem.
It became AGONY!
Thank you for addressing this problem.
I’ve been playing acoustic guitar for 25 years, pretty seriously for the past 15 years. The trend I’ve noticed is that the more I play, the thicker my callouses, and the thicker my callouses, the deeper and more persistent the grooves get in my fingertips. The callouses get very pliable, almost like silly putty, and it’s impossible not to get grooves. I need to remove layers from my callouses with nail clippers before I can play again.
The people that don't get it, play 3 chords for 20 minutes a few times a week. That's you own a guitar, not your a guitar player. Try playing a 4 hour gig, twice a week, and see what happens. I have an entire manicure kit specifically for this. Your not going to avoid peeling or pain, if you actually play more than a song for your girlfriend.
Thank u for this knowledge...my father passed away 10yrs ago and i just opened up his guitar and tuned it amd my fingers are killing me. It means alot to me for my fathers guitar that he played every day to play again through me..thank u🙏
Great advice mate!
God bless and take care...
High action guitars:
Love that you don't mention action at any point. I remember I was held back by not 1 but 3 guitars with extremely high action as a kid, it wasn't until my friend who was more experienced showed me the difference of his setup vs mine and how important it is to have a properly set up guitar 😅
I'm sorry I hope this isn't a stupid question but what does high action mean. I've seen and mentioned a few times on this video and I'm just trying to figure out what that means cuz I've just gotten a Washburn and I wanna start up on it but not busy up my fingers like I did on my acoustic before it got broken
Whether it’s close to the fret or not it’ll sound like shite if I don’t press hard enough. And that’s fine. I got superhuman finger strength after playing on my cheap guitar 💪🏼
Na man, my strings are just way to sharp and painful. I'm pretty sure it's a factory defect. Also the string tension on my guitar is insane.
Same bro. Feels like it's Pierces out the fingers lol
Same here :( I even tried playing near one end of the fret but I still need to put pressure. Ended up having forearm tendinitis but that's what I get for buying a cheap guitar
Then how to play A chord with your trick??
Hey Andy, big fan here. Pretty new to guitar, but I have an issue where I'm not able to spread my fingers far apart, so I end up putting more pressure on the further side of the fret. Any idea how I can fix that?
Practice chromatic scale 20 minutes a day. You'll be good.
Look up "art of guitar finger yoga exercises" on RUclips
Chromatics and then playing songs a little bit out of ur comfort zone. That and just overall time. If u stay consistent it’s nearly impossible to not improve flexibility and dexterity
I have to press down really hard to get it to ring out. G string is really painful. The strings aren't that far from the fretboard so I thought it wouldn't be too bad.
If you don’t press down hard enough for your note, will become either flat or not play properly
I was today years old when I got to know this. This was the only reason i stopped playing guitar. Now I'll take it out of the cover after 3 years. Tysm
Idk man… i hear this alot and when i try to press lightly it doesnt sound good.
Thank you for this great tip 🙏🙏🙏
Depends on your fingers. Everyone is different. I always get groove marks. No matter how light I press.
Of course it also depends on the action of your guitar.
💯
I’ve been playing for decades but recently encountered contact dermatitis which means I have to harden my fingers again from scratch. Everything hurts but hopefully I’ll be playing again soon enough
*pressing down the correct amount*
My acoustic must need adjustment cuz I have to push down quite hard or else there’s so much buzzing
Your actions prolly too high
Every thing I do I put the death grip on I was able to loosen my golf grip some but I’m tryin to be conscious of my hold on my guitar neck but after playing with the guys in the band for four hours my fingers are always on fire ! I can’t even think about picking up my guitar the next day
been playing for a year and im glad i figured this out early.
Lighter strings helps too and a good set up
The e major struggle is real and this helped me alot
Thank you so much it helped me a lot
Thank you so much I learn alot❤❤❤
I wish I knew that before I burnt my Frets down
Thanks man
My fingertip is numb, and I would press down really hard. Is this normal, or is this an issue?
Thaaaaank you soooooo much 👍
Thanks
If you play with a higher action and higher gauge strings this is bound to happen
The problem I have is when I have 3 fingers on the frett, fist finger is too lose second is perfect and third is bleeding
Andy my fingers hurt from day 3 of guitar lesson for beginners
Good man!
when u have high action and u have to press down hard
Needed that
life changer right here
Your hands are also just softer when you first start playing, you’ll have to play for a while for all the Callises to harden up your hands (especially if your playing drums, expect very big ones)
G chord messes me up a bit, but I’ve been getting used to it
Nice !
What should I do with my high action guitar?
I don’t understand why so many people are bitching in the comments my guitar action is much higher than average and the strings are rusty but this guy is right something is just wrong with y’all’s fingers
When I first started, I played til my finger tips bleed
How would u do that to an a chord where u put your three gigantic fingers in one fret
What about when I have to press two strings that are next to each other in the same fret by my fingers are too fat to be next to each other
thanks scott le page's brother
My guitar has steel cords and does it regardless I just tried it for a few mins and it still had indents and I pressed as lightly as I possibly could
All the credit for my guitar learning goes to Andy sir.
Thanks a lot of you Andy sir 💜💜
What do i do if my Em chord buzzez because i'm not pressing hard enough on the A string? Mind you i got very soft fingers, got like 20 hours of playtime.
May our guitar just sucks ... Having bad action thats why required more pressure to make better sound. Of course can't see that happening if you buy expensive or even go to music store and have knowledge to pick a guitar with good action and nice to play.
I have a Gretsch Jim Dandy and I find the strings to be too high. I have never adjusted the truss rod. Maybe I'll try it. Guess I don't play often enough LOL
my barre finger is started to shed its skin...
I have permanent lines and caluses on my fingers i play everyday for a few months . No serious pain
Mr Andy but if you have a guitar made in china
Definitely you will get marks
Meanwhile, electrics : 🙃
My guitar doesn’t touch the fret unless I press down hard
newbie here, i'm practicing E major chord
i did make sure that my finger position is correct but there wasn't any note ringing, any ideas what's my mistake?
i'm practicing on a 50 dollar guitar, could it be the guitar? the guitar action is quite high and i don't know if it's me or the guitar
3 years later my fingers still look like that after playing.
i press lightly but my finger still look like this (i don't feel anything tho)
Ah I was wondering why I was losing sensation in my fingertips
What’s up with you and the finger thing lately?
I was able to find the right pressure to press the string after 3 days of learning, not a flex just want you to know that my guitar is no longer ringing again
This won't be a problem anymore with more time and familiarity?
My $100 acoustic aounds like trash unless i press this hard though
Cheers
Have to buy e-guitar to solve the problem
If i dont press down hard. It dont sound
Doesn't really work, maybe not on my guitar. I did that but my fingers still hurt.
My guitar had an action of 130mm and i didn't know that it was bad👀 i learned everything i know with 13mm guitar action for like 2 years untill i discovered that it should be like 2.5-3 mm. I didn't fixed it bcz the neck just broke and i didn't had the money to get it repaired.
I meant 13mm👀
Good positioning: Me playing while lying down on the couch.
Tell that to SRV😎
beginners will need to press hard and there's no getting past that, as they need to build calluses first.
My fingers are paining
Is it normal for bass tho?
My guitar is opposite or something bro i did the same what you said in the video and got opposite results and did opposite of what you did then got the same results as yours
Good tip, thanks dude!
Mr Crowley, what went wrong with my hand?
i just started learning its my second week but my fingers are always like this
i need to hold second fret on 3rd and 4th string + first fret on second string
can you help?
i also play classical guitar
My strings get more action than Johnny Sins my guy.
What.about bass
Finger blues finger blues new song feom my cheap guitar ... so not easy to press
Expensive guitars are the same. I bought a Zager and my fingers are in pain
Super glue
Its a few seconds for me ;-;
thank you tame impala
No that's normal, the more you do it the less it hurts
Yeah, but I ain't playing open E chords.
It defend on guitar
Me how accidentally dipped hand in daal(Indian soup like food) just after playing. It burnt so much I never felt the pain again
Yeah 😔, I am not getting any sound, until I put some pressure
I have to press hard because my guitar has a lot of action......I will have to service it after few days...
Guys I went to practice today and it’s day 2 of my guitar leaning omggg it was excruciating and I just wanted to bang that guitar on the floor and I came home during mid practicing.. any tips????
For me, it takes about a week of practicing daily for 30 minutes to get decent callouses after having not played for an extended time. So maybe you just need to power through the pain for a bit longer. Otherwise, maybe pick up a nylon string guitar because they are much easier on the fingers.
@@samgould8567 heyy thanks for the tip ! Im all good now honestly I had been a bit dramatic and now I cringe myself abt it lol .. its much better cuz of practicing much and no pain especially. Calluses are formed . We should play together sometime hehe
👍👍👍
