- Nastassja (then known as "Nastassia") Kinski's memorably awkward appearance on Late Night with Dave on 12/29/82. Nastassja had a bad hair day (actually she had just come from a photoshoot) and Dave's comments about it rubbed her the wrong way. Luckily (or perhaps unluckily) Dave recovered in time to keep things from getting out of hand.

Give her a break. She's so young in this interview - age 21 ... and obviously even a little shy - not even knowing the magnitude of her own beauty and charisma. And obviously she was a progressive trailblazer, comfortable in her own skin...not "getting" why Dave was making such a big deal mocking her bold hairdo.
Quite honestly, she looks a tad jaded in this interview with David Letterman ...

I think her absence has been by choice. She's been working again, though only in German productions in the last two years. I hope we see her in something international, if not in the States.

I noticed that at first she was totally out of it, i.e. she did not understand why she was being compared to actresses, she did not understand why Letterman was talking anything of her hair (almost like, "Why do you care? Why are you interested?"), and did not see herself as the same woman in the serpent picture (which was used on the cover of a film she starred in called "Cat People"...) confirmed several times before and when asked about it.

I remember watching this the night of the broadcast. It's so clear she's on something, and Letterman handles her as well as anyone can. It's great to see such a polished performer put on the spot and handle it as well as David does. Classic television moment.
in a way that is the point: to put so called polished performers like his guests on the spot, because the audience want to see how they handle it or don't.
Someone behaving differently to most people doesn't automatically mean they're "on something".
Yes, she's definitely under the influence of a drug or medication. This isn't her usual persona or anyone's. This isn't just "shy" behavior nor "she's just 21" behavior either.

I don't know that she was on something. True, it was the 1980s, so she could very well have been, but it seems to me she was a no nonsense person who didn't want to deal with Dave's cracks at her appearance.

The same things changed with her as with Brooke Shields, as they got older their jaw line and neck grew very wide and their appearance was not "fine boned" anymore. She looks more and more like her crazy father as she ages.

Is she on drugs? She's acting ridiculous. People are commenting things like "poor girl" and "He is asking such strange questions." No he isn't! It's an interview, she should have been prepared to answer questions about her career and life.

These shows are conducted in a controlled environment where audience members are told when to clap, when to be silent, when to laugh... It is not natural at all. Letterman is not visible before nor when Nastassja does this--blinks quickly, which is relative to "switching"--and nobody on-set is. A handler could be off to the side (as is the case...

She was doing a parody of her father, Klaus Kinski, on an earlier German talk show. She even used some of her father's own language. Her parody failed because how was anybody in the U.S. supposed to know? Maybe it was intended as an inside joke for her and her close circle of friends and fans, I don't know. But for those of us who did see that earlier interview it's clear what she's doing.

Just intrigued to know, from a purely personal interest, if you were on David Letterman, watched by millions of people around the globe, would you feel absolutely calm and anxiety-free. Not trying to be combative, just want to know how other people would react in those kinds of situations. For myself I would be extremely anxious, I'm always surprised by how cooly people take these kinds of things, whether they're in show-business or not. But maybe I'm just a terrible neurotic.

He verbally abused their mother and had affairs. If it went deeper, she never said. I'm just going on what Kinski released. It obviously was a hellish nightmare with that man.

I kind of follow your insinuations. Some people here write she didn’t have an idea of the extent her beauty, but your perception goes deepr than that. She has obviously discovered that by the time of the interview (all beautiful women do at some point in life, some wish it, some persuade themselvesof it).
The behaviour is quirky and I am sure she had that as a natural persona. Whag I sense here is that she knows dam. Well what effect she has and she’s shy to have to do with a person that is very known and in full public. Her behaviour isn’t guaranteeing that she has been abused recently before it, imho. She might have been cautious to deal with an older man, which she may or may not have had bad experiences about beforehand.
Abuse is not only physical, it can be so that she has been abused mentally to cross borders, having been a victim of predatory directors - leading her to perform acts that actually weren’t fit for her to perform.
