Here are a few updates from FDA, we’re talking allergies and food. It’s FDA In Your Day.
Hi, I’m Dr. Namandjé Bumpus, Principal Deputy Commissioner at the FDA.
Today on FDA In Your Day I’ll be discussing a few items that you may have in your home.
Let’s talk about allergy medicines. Since we’re in the midst of the season I thought I would mention that we recently posted information on Allergy Relief for Your Child.
When a child’s sniffles and sneezes won’t go away, it may be allergies.
Check the product label to make sure an allergy medication is right for your child’s age. Some - but not all OTC allergy medicines are indicated for children as young as 6 months. However, just because a product’s box says it’s intended for children, doesn’t mean it’s intended for children of all ages. So make sure you check that box.
And now turning to the F in FDA. Food. All our food - like everything in the world - is made up of chemicals. The presence of a chemical alone isn’t what determines whether a food is safe to eat. To assess the safety of chemicals in food, scientists at the FDA and others worldwide look at information about the chemical’s safety, as well as how much of a chemical is in the food and how much a person eats or drinks because the amount that counts. To help you navigate the science behind food chemical safety check out our consumer update on FDA.gov.
Thank you for watching and I look forward to bringing you more updates from the FDA soon!
