Hate to spoil the party here, but I was quite put off from competitive cycling in my youth because of the garish apparel cyclists used to wear. Nowadays, if we except Team Intermarché loud colour schemes and POC time trial helmets, I'd say cycling looks a lot neater than in the 70s and 80s.
@@mvm9407 That's half a century apart! While this year has a lot more garbage than last year by a great deal. Actually, the cycling industry has gone nuts post covid.
Given the title of this weeks show, it was so nice to see Si and Dan talking about condoms whilst wearing fully unprotected T-shirts. That is commitment well done guys 👍🏻
i DON'T know what your talking about guys, Time-Trails are the coolest dicipline in cycling! By watching the aeroposition vs gear on everyone you can get a decent idea of who will ride fast in the TT, yet almost always there is a cyclist with his/her head sticking out like a akward aerobrake while STILL going fast enough to get top 10, then imagine what they could have done with a more aero position! But THEN you need to think, can they produce that power in more aero position? Maybe not! Also a slippery streamlined aero-position looks super COOL! The length of some of the aero-socks though... yea, not so cool..
Maybe it's because I've just done 12 miles gravel and mud, maybe it's the Simon and Dan classic lineup but that was the most enjoyable GCN show for ages. Good work lads.
Between myself and my wife we have 4. 😢 Not impressed with the short coverage this channel gave the issue, showing that they are an advertising channel with very little real journalism. Never covered anything to do with fake parts either. I guess I should treat it as entertainment and get real info elsewhere.
This Shimano crank problem has been happening for 11 goddam years and they finally sort of address it while how many people have been injured or killed? They deserve, at the least, a very bad time and considerably more criticism from you guys.
Reportedly, zero deaths. In the US, crashes, “joint displacements, lacerations, fractures.” Things I’ve done just from racing. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, a total of SIX injuries have occurred out of 760,000 cranksets sold in America. Six. Extrapolated to global sales of this crankset, that would be 22 injuries and zero deaths. This is the Audi “sudden acceleration” crisis of cycling. Now, let’s ask. How many cyclists have ACTUALLY DIED just racing bikes? According to the US National Safety Council, in 2020, of the 1,260 (that is ONE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED SIXTY) cycling DEATHS in America, 806 died in motor vehicle-related crashes, and 454 in “other” incidents. And that would be ZERO from this crankset. The UN’s World Health Organization estimated around 56,000 cycling fatalities occurred in 2016 worldwide based on around 4% of motor vehicle related casualties with a cyclist death involved. Cranksets? Basically a non-issue. Motor vehicles? Well, there’s your issue. And as a racer, crashing in races has put me more at risk over 50 years of racing more than any other thing I’ve done besides driving a motor vehicle, the entire time doing that, I was putting more cyclists at risk. And yes, I’ve probably put a healthy six figures of cycling miles on a Shimano 6800 or related hollow tech cranksets and power meter adaptations and can exceed 1000 watts in a sprint (nothing huge, actual numbers higher…). Zero problems, which will turn out true for more than 99% of turned-in cranksets. Just for some perspective. Not in any way associated with Shimano other than I’ve bought and raced a lot of their gear over the decades. 😮
Had my Shimano Ultegra crank 'de-laminate' a couple of years ago. Had it replaced and the local supplier received a reluctant refund for me after a little bit of haggling. Glad to see the issue finally acknowledged by Shimano, but it means I can no longer blame my incredible power! As for the race for aero, was it not always thus in recent years? For those of us addicted to climbing, it is more about weight. Trying the Stevlio and Gavia back-to-back and each in under 2 hours this summer, I was glad of every gram I could shed! 🥺
My Ultegra crank - the 6750 - happens to be a one piece crank arm set so before they experimented with bonding two arm pieces that now need replacing. Stick with what works Shimano.
Update on the Malibu Tri, it will happen this weekend, but the bike course has been shortened for both race days. They've basically turned it into a circuit course. It should be very interesting since this does not allow faster riders to separate on the course and spread out. Unfortunately, I feel there will be lots of accidents with pros & weekend warriors all mixed together. I will update you guys on Sunday as I will be down on the beach supporting a few friends doing the event.
For the 'Wahoo Storage Stand' in Hack/Bodge, that's a great idea for a setup like what I've got - a permanent indoors bike, preferably vintage and steel. My 1972 Schwinn Super Le Tour would be a bike I'd have no fears damaging swinging it up and down on a permanent indoor trainer. If it wasn't in a dedicated workout room and I had limited space, I can guarantee that this is a solution to minimal floor space availability I'd utilize. (but yes, with a steel bike so that 'crunchy carbon' heart-drop wouldn't ever occur)
Those modern TT helmets are actually head mounted aerodynamic fairings. And as such, should be made illegal for all road cycling events. My vote is too force all road cycling events to mandate riders pick one bike frame and have to use it for all stages. Only permitted changes should be wheels and gearing.
#captioncompetition 🎶"And i think its gonna be a long, long time Til Red Bull beats me to the finish line He's not as fast as you may think Oh Wout Van Aert He's in my pocket man"🎶
Agreed about the getting out of saddle rather than shifting down; Si, I remember one time you said your Di2 reported you shift every 17 seconds on average (and prefer being seated). I tend to pop up out of the saddle when the gradient increases...and will do several hour rides comfortably not shifting at all. (rolling hills type roads). I can't help to feel that these are related. I would also love to see Si do a "OoS" training program. And the complimentary one from Ollie going the other direction.
For goodness sakes, just use Velomobiles in time trials. They are faster, and they look a heck of a lot cooler. No one look at my velomobile and says “look at that aero weenie.” No no. They look at my velomobile and say “wow. That is so cool. Does it have a motor? No? No motor? How in the world are you so fast?” No see, THAT is something that will get kids hooked on cycling.
Things that look worse than ever: all black components, disc brakes, oversized aeroshaped tubing, sloping top tubes, unimaginative decals and matte paintjobs, huge casettes, gravel bikes with weird ultra flared handlebars and tiny chainrings Things that look better than ever: helmets, shoes
Regarding the T-Shirts: 15% of design is making sure it doesn't look like a swastika or a dick. Failed on the 2nd one i'd say. Especially when the colors are close like the blue one :D
Who knew way back in 1977 that the helmets the rebel troopers wore at the very beginning of STAR WARS would be cutting edge tech almost half a century later, that combined with a base layer bike bra [er... radio holder] and Si's full face eyeglasses would violate the laws of aerodynamics?
The Malibu Triathlon is on, a last minute City Council meeting it was approved, they changed the route but didn't get the permits in time, but the City Council approved the new route, a lot of people take part and come to watch and support this event. Si can't help himself he is a zip tie snob I suspect he had a traumatic experience in the past trying to use them, I'm a retired mechanic so I got lots of experience using them on planes. cars. trucks, motorcycles and bicycles. LOL I used to help me put on my new tires onto the rim.
You two are on fire today. I still love the TT look but track pursuit looks the coolest. And Si, don't fool yourself. That face shield is only slightly smaller than your normal ridiculously NOT-cool glasses.
is it just me or are there some other folks out there who do really like the aesthetic of super aero stuff _better_ than the rugged bits. Give me neon swoopy tron vibes over 90s MTBs looks any day. But maybe that's just me. (also no bicep farrings please that _is_ too much)
If that face-plate-glasses setup where using a non-mirrored finish, I would consider it. I really hate eating bugs while I ride. I prefer getting my protein from whey-protein shakes instead...
Has cycling ever looked worse? 🚵
No!

Tour la Phallus commenerative t shirts available in the GCN store 🎉
I'm going to buy Si's glasses, a blue helmet and cycle all over town yelling COOOOOBRAA!
This guy gets it!
And now we know.....And knowing is half the battle.
Am I the only one who sees a certain phallic theme in the new shirts?
Especially Dan's blue one!!
Great show as always Si and Dan! Thank you for picking my intro clip, thrilled to have made it and glad to be part of the GCN community!
Thanks for the submission! 🙌 We're very proud of out GCN community! Thanks for getting stuck in

Si and Dan can’t believe that 2 million Ultegra or Dura Ace cranksets could be out there. I have 3 alone myself.
Trek will replace whether it’s failed or not.

so what your saying about gravel being the coolest form of cycling is that the closer you can get to a mtb the cooler it is?
Nah. It is the dropbars.
😂😂😂 I love my Walmart MTN bike I guess it makes me Walmart cool😂

Me too. Almost went inside my mouth. Then got stung in back of leg a few weeks later.
