- Learn how to make a handy useful winch using just a rope and items harvested from the woods. This winch is known as the Flip Flop winch. The winch was popularized by Mors Kochanski a well known Canadian Bushcraft / survival instructor. Winch any number of heavy objects too heavy to move by hand. Winch snowmachines, four wheelers, boats, stumps, logs or winch many things too heavy to move by hand.

Hello my name is Lonnie and My wife is Connie.
Here at Far North Bushcraft And Survival you will learn about many long forgotten tricks and tips of the old time woodsmen. Not only will you learn about bushcraft / woodcraft but you will learn many things that will help you to survive in less than ideal "survival" situations as well. Come along and sit with me by the campfire as I delve into these subjects in a way that you can easily learn to then do yourself.
I will show you how to make shelters, gather food, use wild medicines as well as start fires with or without matches, lighters, ferro rods, etc Хобби
Came back for another refresher. Thanks Lonnie and Connie.
my grandfather used this exact same method with me when I was 10 yrs old (45 yrs ago). we used it to hoist a full water barrel up a 10 foot cliff ... we used chains instead of rope .. because the weight was so great ... awesome video ...
I absolutely adore Mors Kochanski! Now you know how the pyramids of Giza were constructed.
This is one of the most amazing bushcraft tricks I have ever seen. Would never have thought of this myself. Stored it in my longterm memory now.
I'm a Kansan boy and I tell stories to my wife about all these cool ideas I find on RUclips that's so practical especially since I'm a mud rider lol awesome instruction old timer. U have my respect 🙂
Thank you Lonnie & Connie for y'alls time and videos you have helped us more than you can ever imagine. Greg & Kathy Byers Lake Toxaway,NC
I must have read going on a hundred survival and outdoors publications and watched near that many videos over the years and I have never seen this winch..that is amazing! It took me a minute to grasp the concept as you were initially putting the pieces together. You are truly the only person I have ever seen do this. THANK YOU for this knowledge!
Saw this amazing technique from Mors Kochanski himself several years ago - and developed some additional useful tricks:
1. the side-pole ("flop") acts as a winch-reel, the smaller it is in diameter, the more weight you can move - yet it has to be sturdy enough to handle the forces, so get some dead standing hardwood (if you can), that still has its bark on. If you are strong and the load isn't that heavy, choose a side-pole with a bigger diameter for a faster winching.
2. during winching, the poles move slowly towards the anchor-point - if you have to deal with muddy ground and only a few trees or bushes, you may have issues to pound stakes that hold back the side-pole, which tends to parallel the rope and let it slip off the ends. You can replace the two stakes with one piece of rope (or even paracord) that is tied from the end of the side-pole to a prusik-loop around the pulling rope - when it gets loose, just move the prusik- loop a bit further to keep the side-pole somewhat perpendicular. Get the rope long enough to avoid interfering with the "flip"-pole.
3. it makes not much sense to make the poles longer than you are, you can't use the extra leverage above headhigh - only advantage is, the extra weight on the "flip"-pole lets you get along longer without using the two loops around the rope to prevent it from flipping back.
Stay safe
Awesome backwoods engineering!
great video Lonnie,
it is sure a winch that can come in handy
i used only once,in a real situation ,my car was stuk ,and was glad i figured it out,how to use it
you made a very good tutorial
also nice you mention Mors his part in this
We love you, Lonnie and Connie.
I cant believe I have never heard of this before with all my scouting experience. This is awesome and potentially life saving. Thanks and keep up the great videos!
Good comprehensive demonstration of the "Flip-Flop' wench. Thanks
Very helpful to know. Honestly, Lonnie, you make me grateful to be an American. God bless you and your family.
That sure is handy! First time I heard tell of it. My Jeep says thank you. Take care.
Thanks Lonnie and Connie. This is more useful information to be prepared with. Semper Paratus and peace be with you.
My truck got stuck today. This would have been a huge help..
Thanks for the video
Good to hear you again hope you and Connie are doing well
This is the coolest thing. Going to teach the Boys Scouts this! Thanks Lonnie!
This bit of rigging technique is a priceless addition to my mental data base. As this video and others like it often show its value in vehicle recovery, I have to wonder, though. If you have room in your vehicle to pack a line of sufficient strength and length, then I think you have room to pack a come-along.
Just rewatching some of your videos and realized that I forgot to thank you for your answer to my comment. Peace to you guys. Thanks
Pretty cool seeing older people getting into RUclips, sice you know, it is labored as a young people thing. Nice video!
I've seen many videos on the bushcraft wench, but yours is absolutely the most informative! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Pure ingenuity! Never seen that before. I will share it with my friend who leads the local Scottish boyscout troop here! Thanks for sharing again!
Great demo. Always questioned how this worked. You explained it very well. Another tool in the box. Thanks Lonnie for your teaching and sharing your knowledge
Thank you for your video Lonnie and Connie. I hope the best for you. Greetings from Italy!
I can confirm the power of this winch. I was with a friend in Finland, our 4-4 landrover slid into a ditch, unfazed Olaf the "troll" cut two levers and pulled the fully loaded Land Rover back onto the trail in 90 mins..
Lonnie!
that is smart!!
thanks for it...
And Mors too!!
😆
Great Video - thanks for sharing. I particularly liked the rope loops and the post+tree modifications. ATB. Nigel
I've learned a lot of bushcraft tips and tricks but this one is probably my favorite. It very useful on many levels. Thanks Lonnie for the video, great job.
I was just wondering how to make a small winch. Thank you
I've watched lots of videos on how to do this and as simple as it seems, i just couldn't get it.
Then i watched you!
Thank you so much for your wonderful videos with such clear instructions!
You've made it alot easier.
Liked this video a lot. Of course - now I want to go find a stump to move around to make sure I can do it :)
By far the best explanations & instruction on how to make the pole winch 👍👌🙌🙌🙌🙌 Thanks Lonnie

GREAT VIDEO - I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THIS LITTLE GEM OF AN IDEA! I ALREADY WENT BACK IN MY MIND TO THE MANY TIMES IVE BEEN STUCK AND HAD ROPE BUT ......UNTIL NOW- SO GLAD TO KNOW YOU TWO ON FARNORTH! THANKS GUYS
I seen this winch type awhile back, altho i didnt remember how it was done. Thanks for this easy to follow video on this winch. The way you tightened the line to the tree, is how i hand my hammock, same kinda knot. Easily comes out later, with alittle work. :) Very cool man, ATB and stay safe out there my friend.
good to know thanks for the info
Very useful piece of knowlege. The walk-through is as much appreciated.
Thank You for this video I added it to my list of things to learn how to do ...I may practice it on a small scale model to teach myself how it is done
hey lonnie and connie, i remember your jokes about the winter temps in alaska, well here in camp verde, az the high today is 112 and tomorrow it's 114. it's similar to living in a slow cooker. lol
i've made that winch before. quite handy :)
cheers from camp verde (hibernating on the couch eating ice cream)
God bless y'all

Great Video Lonnie! Thanks as always.
Hi Lonnie, Thanks for the excellent video on the flip flop winch. A very clear instruction on how to set it up with a few refinements, i.e. the steak in the ground and tree to lodge the pole against.
Moz...
Hey Lonnie: this video is a great piece of info to carry in my data bag . The older I get the less effective brute strength is.Thanks Brian 77
Your knowledge never ceases to amaze me Lonnie, where were you when i was a scout?I guess the scout had to be ready for the master.Well wishes to you&yours
Thanks 4 de knowledge.
Hi Lonnie. Long time no see. Great video. Definitely not something that is shown much. I actually saw an example of this on an off road forum once a few years ago. Had forgotten all about it until now. Thats one reason I like your videos so much. They aren't a bunch of repeats of other videos that flood youtube. Keep up the good work. Great channel.
Brilliant! Thanks Lonnie
Genius! Thanks for the demonstration

Thanks so much - this could be a real life saver when the trail gets muddy and your journey doesn't go as planned. Or like you say - stump / log moving. Definitely working smart as opposed to hard.
