if you can crash at 30mph on a bigger bike such as a 1000cc bike and get badly injured, the same goes for 50cc and 125cc bikes. I hate when people say that there don't need protection when riding a 50cc, its just a stupid decision.
If one person changes their mind and buys a full face helmet instead of an open face after seeing this post youve done well ... if a few more you've probably saved a life
I did: just changed my mind now. Thank you. I am gutted but it’s a silly irrational thought and therefore I shall be ignoring it and going full face. Cheers Spicy110!!
Thanks for doing this. I am 65 years old and I have been riding all of my life with open face helmets. I did buy a full face helmet and a modular helmet but I went back to a open face. I watched your video because I bought a new bike and my helmet is overdue for replacement. I was considering an open face helmet. After all it is what I've always worn. Watching your video, I feel a bit silly. I've had a couple of serious accidents over the years and have walked away relatively unscathed. I realize that I've been very lucky and it is time to buck up and do the right thing.
@@samcan9997 *The 3/4 open face helmet protects the skull. Let's not lie to folks and say it doesn't. The issue here is whether it protects the lower face. That can be answered by crash stats involving 3/4 open helmet wearers and ratio of face injuries to no face injuries.*
@@hulkhatepunybanner Exactly. Funny how this full-face helmet brigade comes stormimg out of their corner to support videos like this one and to apurt their visdom telling us the 3/4 helmet wearers we are all wrong, isn't it.
While I agree with wearing a full face helmet and always do, there are some subtle factors that the study may not have addressed. For example, if you ride without any or very little protective gear, it may mean you are a person who inherently takes more risks (i.e., riding well over the speed limit). Therefore incidences and consequences of having an accident are likely to occur with greater frequency and be more severe.
I wear glasses with a full-face helmet. It's a bit of a faff every time you put on or take off the helmet, but for the safety afforded, it's worth it. Of my two crashes, both instances I have avoided facially injure due to wearing a full-face helmet. One crash I flew forward and so is understandable that my chin guard hit the floor, but the second time I came off the side and I still got quite a crack to my chin area and the chin-guard protected me. There was even one instance where I fell off the bike whilst it was stationary and the chin guard stopped me getting hurt. I've ridden without a helmet on before and it feels amazingly freeing, but considering even the slightest and slowest accidents can have serious repercussions, I wear a full-face helmet.
Spicy i know this video isnt on the subject of my comment but i want to thank you for the riding tips videos because it helped me pass my A1 license in 1st try.
"You won't be able to feel the wind on your face, if you don't have one." lmao . thanks bro. i ride an electric bike, for commuting to work. going more than 20mph. i'm gonna invest in a full face helmet for sure & jacket & gloves for full protection. thanks for the advice, appreciate it bruv, much love from vegas.
Thanks for making this. I’m a new rider and have a full face coming but I am getting impatient and almost ordered a 3/4 helmet, but after watching the video I don’t think I’m willing to take that risk! Thanks for the info and being open to other people’s choices!
I have involved 2 serious crash 8 yrs apart and luckily with both on shoei full face helmet both took bad frontal damage which protected my face and I strongly recommended to my fellow riders to think about it, and about the sun glasses it happened way back then I was using ray ban on a highway usually riding fast at that moment I lift my visor up to get the air in guess what happens probably a pebble pick up from a car rear tyre flew and hit on my glasses with a sound of impact I closed my eyes the right side glass shatter into tiny pieces. Learn from real world experience. Never to bring up the visor while riding, unless stop for a red light at the traffic junction.
in my 30 year iv seen people have crashes on motorbikes and open face helmets are unsafe safe my dad use to say never use a open face helmets. the law for helmets have been out since 1976 so full face are the best never use a open face is what I say . great video keep up the good work
Well done! And we can crank it up a notch further by saying "Just take the car. And don't forget to put your seat belt on." That's what my aunt Karen used to say to me. I had been told many times that when I hop on a motorbike, one foot is already in the grave. The very first time I heard that was in 1965 after my friend and I slid on gravel taking a corner. We weren't wearing any protective gear, not even a helmet. Came home with rash on arms and legs. But the lure of two-wheeled thrill was too hard to resist that I carried on regardless of consequences. Just mitigate the risks.
I had a serious accident yesterday and my face is totally fucked up, got more than 10 stitches in my neck, all because of an "open helmet". PLEASE, don't wear them. Please wear a closed helmet. I was wearing it just for style purposes, but never again.
Good video. You are clearly passionate about a public safety issue and are trying to educate people. Having said that, if we are being honest, you have chosen a personal (i.e. arbitrary) point on the risk:benefit spectrum and have decided that people one step over are irrational and stupid. Let me be clear that I share a similar point on the spectrum as you do (I ride a motorcycle and go ATGATT with quality equipment). However, there are many people who would think you (and I) are just as stupid for even riding motorcycles at all. From where they sit (in a modern car with crumple zones, seat belt, crash avoidance systems, air bags) it would seem inane to argue on the finer points of which helmet we choose to wear while piloting our two-wheeled death machines. Regardless, keep up the good work.
I wear a full face helmet 75% of the time but in the summer i wear my open face with a pair of safety glasses and the only reason i use my open face is because i suffer with the heat and sweat alot in my full face lid
I want a an open face Helmet to feel the wind in my face...........And now I don't....Thanks man this is a well balanced argument you convinced me, full face only for me.
I was looking for some reviews of open helmets and i came here. I just switched to my new bike (4th one now, until now i was using full helmet)and i was thinking of buying new one, open helmet, but when listening to your arguments I have many concerns and many of the things i wasn't even thinking about. Thanks for this, very open minding arguments!
Totally and utterly agree with the way you presented that my friend, it is an informed (hopefully) choice and if people choose to wear an open face then they must know the extra risks. I myself did so on my 50cc trial bike, and 90cc scooter, but when I moved up to 125's, I went full face and never looked back. Had a smash at 40mph and landed on my back, so can't say the helmet saved me, but I was told I faceplanted the road as I came down, so maybe it did! RSM8, keep the advice coming, youngsters need to know the risks so they can make their choices!
I use to wear a flip up helmet, but I stopped because I felt it just was not safe enough on my big bike. (I had this helmet before I passed my full licence). I was involved in a serious quad bike accident when I was a teen (my friend was on the back). My friend was wearing a flip up helmet and I was wearing a full face. I was fine, he broke a lot of front teeth, and messed up his chin and jaw. Same goes with correct gear, I had full protection, he had minimal, he has massive cuts and brusies on his stomach and hands, I was fine again. Also having the wind in your face at 40MPH + is not fun. It is hard to breathe, you cant see because of the cold tears. And you get bugs in your eyes! This video makes very good points, and is so true.
FACTS.... I'm only wearing an open faced - helmet because it was originally the one I had to be used in the car for track days. Will be getting full-faced one aSAP!
Completely agree, in fact I don't ever ride any more with my visor up ever since a golf ball sized rock bounced off the road and hit the side of my visor smashing the clip at the side, I was very lucky. With an open faced helmet it would of smashed strait into my eye socket. Always go full face. Not to mention most full face helmet inserts have a slight gap at the sides specifically designed for glasses wearers.
I now wear a Shoei Hornet X2 having come from wearing an open face helmet. I've an Adventure style bike and like the advantage of having a helmet with a long peak/visor combination. Oh and I don't ever ride on motorways. THE only negative part of wearing a full face helmet is the reduced ability to hear stuff at junctions with stop lines etc. So you need to take extra care when pulling out of a junction and that's no bad thing!
I wear my custom 500 almost exclusively on green lanes.... I am in total agreement on the new rider front: custom 500 was my first helmet, I got it before my bike. The very first thing I bought after getting my bike was a full face....confidence on the road as a new rider was almost 2x as strong once wearing the full face... the reduced weight is the main reason I still use it for green lanes. If I could afford a full face & lightweight mx helmet the open face would be relegated to posing on the driveway in a heart beat.
I agree with everything you say apart from thinking that folk who wear open face helmets knowing all the facts are stupid. I don't consider myself as such. I first slung my leg over a bike as a teenager in the 70's and have been hooked on riding ever since. Most of the time I wear lockable flip front helmets which are statistically less safe than full face but there is a reason for that, claustrophobia. It is ok when I am riding along but starts to get to me when I stop, flipping up the front as soon as I stop (not lights etc) stops the panic feeling. Now we come to the point about open face helmets and why I wear them for the odd fun ride, it is because we are mandated by law to have to wear a helmet and that is the closest you can get to riding without a helmet in this country. Yes I would ride sometimes without a helmet but with goggles, why? well for the sheer joy and the feeling it gives me. I know the risks involved having had a good few offs over the years, I know that if I did not have that bit over the front I would have had bad facial injuries. Like I say, I do it just for the pure joy it gives me.
There's a guy like that near me. No exhaust, no gear or helmet until recently where he's started wearing a cheap Motocross style helmet. Rides like a twat and ruins the local park by doing donuts all over the grass.
Freedom of choice, too much nanny state health and safety but if you wanna ride with an open face it's your choice just know the risks, but he'll if we wanted to be completely safe we wouldn't ride bikes and all drive 4x4 but that'd be boring. When I first started riding i was apprehensive of wearing a full face helmet because I felt claustrophobic but I got over that and also I ride full face with glasses and have no problems at all but the allure of the old face pic still falls occasionally but as you said spicy too many done and it enough pros.
Saw a guy the other day doing 80mph+ on a KTM Super Duke 1290 wearing shorts, t-shirt and an open face helmet. Absolutely crazy. It was hot and I got a really sweaty back from my backpack/leather jacket combo but I wouldn't have it any other way.
got 3 helmets, open, full and jet and love them and obviously open is less protected but feels better on a run and agree full make you feel safer but I am not going to kit out completely with all the kit as where does it stop. enjoy riding and don't judge :)
as with the many comments below, Spicy, I have now completely changed my opinion of open faced helmets, and am now in the market for a full helmet ONLY for when I take my CBT in the summer! Phew!! Thanks!!! keep up the great work
I couldn't agree more Spicy. I was rear ended on the motorway going 70 and I landed on my face and broke my cheek even in a full face helmet, if I was wearing an open face I would be dead I'm pretty sure. People need to be educated on the dangers of not having good face protection
Personally i use a flip front helmet as it has the advantage of an open faced helmet, plus the advantages of full face helmets. You can have your helmet open at petrol stations or stationary, putting glasses on, walking out and about. And should you wish you could potentially ride with the front up again, if you wished. Then you get the safety of the full faced helmet, the element protection etc
I used to use an open helmet until I came to my senses and invested in a proper full face. Interestingly, the full face turns out to be more enjoyable anyway. The open helmet is distracting in gusty winds. Always have to point my head into the wind to keep it from lifting off. The moment I got my full face helmet up to 25mph, I knew it was better. It slices right through the wind and is significantly quieter. Let’s me enjoy the pleasurable parts of the ride without distraction.
I crashed with my bike years ago on a slippery street and wasn't even driving very fast. I fell flat on my face, wasn't able to keep my head up. I had worn some kind of street fighter helmet with a pointy chin-guard and had loose teeth from the tip of the chin guard smashing between upper lip and nose. Teeth not hurting anymore after a few weeks. But boy...my face would have turned to mincemeat with an open face helmet.
I have to say before watching this I was sat on the fence about open faced helmets. I own both open and full face lids. While I love open face helmets in the summer ( with a visor ) I won't be using it any more. The argument against them is simply too strong. Thank you
I doubt you have actually done any research into this subject. You have just listened to another persons opinion and gone "what he said" full face helmets are deadly if you hit the road wrong!
I wear glasses, and i even use a icon variant. But you have special fullface helmet that can open up. Full system helmet. So, that doens't sound like a solid argument.
How do you feel about flip up front helmets? I use a LS2 Valient which opens up and the chin guard goes all the way over to the back of your head, I find it great while stopped for a brew and a chat however once on the move I lock the chin guard down making it full face. Also this helmet...like many others are designed with wearing glasses in mind making it very easy and comfortable to wear them while riding. I can remember in the old days open Face helmets were only worn with goggles, I big leather chin strap and usually a thick scarf covering the jaw area. I wouldn't be surprised if that's where the idea of a full face helmet came from!
I would wear a full face but I can't find one that fits at a price I can afford. I need a 3 or 4 xl size. Additionally I am very claustrophobic and if there isn't enough room I end up with a panic attack. I therefore wear my 3/4 helmet all the time. I would love to wear a full face or modular but so far I haven't been able. I did have one accident and it was in my 3/4. The back of my head struck the ground and the 3/4 helmet did a great job. I also always wear at least safety glasses even with a visor down.
You make some good points, but I don’t agree with everything you say. Clearly an open face helmet is a LOT better than no helmet, but I admire your passion. Good on you mate!
Well said, totally agree. I really like the custom bike look, but there are plenty of retro-style but still full-face helmets available, which I'll be getting when I have a bike of that nature. Also you forgot to mention that plenty of modern full-faces have slots and spaces for glasses, thus removing that argument entirely.
Better to avoid the accident in the first place. These full face helmets are only 37% effective in averting serious brain injury so if you're really interested in safety don't even ride a motorcycle as cars are much safer.. Several years ago a friend of mine was killed in a motorcycle accident even though he was wearing a full face helmet. I own 3 full-face helmets but here's the thing, i have almost been killed more than once while wearing a full face helmet because my peripheral vision was limited by the helmet. I wear an open face helmet now as my field of vision is so much better. You might think I'm an idiot but I assure you that the feeling is mutual.
The argument of well don't take risks then Is dumb, do you drive without a seat belt? As I say in the video if you want to use one do it, this is about young riders not realising the risk of using them. As for peripheral vision, when did you last try a full face? They have moved on and my current helmet my vision isn't limited at all.
@@spicy110 NO, I don't wear a seat belt either. I have been riding motorcycles almost 40 years and never been seriously injured on a motorcycle. The truth is that life is full of risks....my Uncle was killed just walking down the sidewalk near his house when a lady drove her car too wide around the corner and ran him down. My Uncle was doing everything right but none of that mattered. I manage risk in my own way and have done pretty good so far. You want to wear a full face helmet all the time then more power to you but it just isn't for me.
@@spicy110 And here you go again, calling someone"dumb, stupid, and ignorant" because they don't agree with you. You just can't help acting like a jackass I guess.
@@spicy110 And now you're being dishonest....in your video you said that everyone is either "dumb" or "stupid" or an "idiot" who doesn't agree with you and so I posted, "You might think I'm an idiot but I assure you that the feeling is mutual." And even you admitted that you don't know if the Brazilian study you quoted is trustworthy. Data can often be misleading as in the case of the famous Icon Airframe Statistics picture ....the reason the most damage is on the helmet chin bar is because it sticks out so much farther than an uncovered human chin. EVERY picture I have seen of those percentages of facial damage has been drawn on a full face helmet, not on a human face... motorbikewriter.com/content/uploads/2014/04/icon-airframe-statistic-helmet-0.jpg and this picture of the helmet appears to me to be a deliberate attempt by helmet manufacturers to mislead people because no human chin sticks out anywhere near as far as the chin bar does, not even Jay Leno's chin. *This is a record of helmet damage in accidents, NOT facial damage.* And yes, a 4 or 5 pound gigantic helmet is going to make contact with the pavement every single time a biker takes a fall. The fact is that I've been down in a motorcycle accident without a helmet and never once hit my head.... I slid on my chest and hands with my jacket and gloves absorbing the damage and never even came close to grinding my face on the pavement. I did end up with a little road rash on my knees but it was no big deal. It is disingenuous for you to say you support the rights of a person to dress how they want on a motorcycle and then call them a stupid idiot for exercising those rights. Just quit lying about it and admit that you DON'T support their rights to do as they wish.
Totally agree. I had a nice little crash 2 years ago and slid up the road ON MY FACE at 50mph. In a full face helmet of course. Huge scraping up the chin bar and visor. Not to mention all the bug splatter on my visor after a ride. Rather that be on my visor than in my eyes
I wear glasses, large square "nerd" or "hipster" glasses and iv never had any issues with them in full-face helmets so I call bs on that point as well.
Wouldn't it this argument be made for why ride a motorcycle at all? People think we are stupid because we could be safe behind a 4 door car instead of having our bodies exposed to the elements and risking it all. ?
No that argument doesn't work at all, as you will see in the comments many others have tired to use that logic. The best way to put it is this. If you are driving a car do you use a seat belt? It's an item that is there to lower risks of injury if you crash, the chin bar is no different. By your logic you are saying if you have to use a seat belt why drive at all. Sounds silly now doesn't it.
Hi spicy110 I fully agree with you and when you talked about broken jaw for anyone reading this I currently have a broken jaw and have just had surgery I currently have screws in my mouth helping keep it shut and trust me it isn't nice at all this isn't due to a bike accident but people pls just wear a helmet with a chin guard 👍🏻
I love the classic bike riders who must use a pudding basin halmet cos it goes with the bike. Over forty year's of riding I have had started with a jet type open face but when full face came out bought a Bell Star, a friend lost his teeth when he was hit in the face by a side stand that fell of a bike in front, both he and the stand were doing over 85 at the time.
Regarding the glasses argument, I am perfectly happy using my glasses within a full-face helmet. Moreover, I would hate insects and other gunk hitting my actual glasses, possibly damaging them. They are not as easy to replace as visors are ..
👏👊 well said Spicy couldn't agree more. But what is it about the look that people like, i saw the other day a rider ,open face helmet , short sleeved shirt and shorts oh and not forgetting the boat shoes and no socks ! Absolutely crazy.
Good video and I agree. But…. If seatbelts in cars are compulsory then perhaps open face lids shouldn’t be allowed. After the impact on the NHS must be costly.
Thanks for the video long time full face user was tempted to pick up a Hedon open face because it looked amazing...but after you shared those facts, I'm sticking with the full face.
I rode bicycles and my average speed over hilly terrain was 35km/h. You can still get badly injured at 35km/h. I went down in a couple of quick turns due to a worn tyre providing less grip than expected. Helmet struck the ground at the temple, glasses smashed, knee smashed and on crutches for weeks, SO much skin gone that I had high fever for days and felt near to requiring hospitalisation. Add motorized speeds and eg stopping distances from the extra weight of a motorcycle or scooter and the safety gear should reflect the risk.
Hi there. I was considering getting an open face helmet until I saw you video. I have a modular flip front helmet and a Yamaha dragstar. Now I have decided to stick with my full face helmet even though an open face or 3/4 helmet would look better for all of the reasons you have stated. I try to teach young and new drivers to be safe and to drive within their own limitations as I lost my youngest son in an RTC when he was just 18 years old. (5 years ago). I also see the results of RTC's too often as I am a firefighter. So I agree, any safety advice should be listened to and taken into consideration. Many thanks for your informative advice. R.N.
Spicy saves the day again, but what should I get to match my cruiser loadout🤔 sporty full face and huge cruiser looks odd, gonna have to find some kind of modular that suits the cruiser look
1988, no internet, no riding instruction, no friends who ride, bought my first bike. Back then you just left the dealer and figured it out on your own. Luckily I just thought a full face helmet was a good idea so I bought a good one. I managed to wreck at relatively low speed 25mph or so. I was wearing a polo shirt, light pants, high top leather sneakers and my helmet. I wound up with 3rd degree burns on both arms, legs, my hands were chewed up, the leather sneakers both wore through to my leg bone and my helmet chin bar was ground down so far I could push it in with my fingers. The helmet also had a chunk out of it in the back from the curb where I was finally piled up. Wear what you want, but nobody today should claim they didn't have the opportunity to know what that choice means. It's a bad choice though.
Plenty of helmets fit glasses too, just bring them with you when you try on helmets. Put helmet on, open visor and put glasses on. I wear scrips or sunglasses in my helmets, always have.
Nicely put together argument and vid mate! :-) I have a Davida open face lid, I have pretty much retired it now but that is mainly due to me motovlogging rather than not liking it. 100% agree on the risks, and the right to choose our own stupid actions. The main thing I loved about my Davida was how quiet it is, I have never owned a quieter crash helmet and I have had many top tier full face crash helmets in my 27yrs on bikes. I'll probs not wear it on a bike again due to the risks if I was in an accident, but if I did a car trackday and open face lids were allowed I would use it as it is very comfy, and in a car when pushing it can all get quite hot and stuffy in a full face lid.
I wore an open face helmet when I had my 50cc moped and I admit that they’re a lot more fun, however I’d always wear a full face now simply due to the risks
I wear glasses, so I have a flip front helmet so I can put my helmet on and take it off without taking them off. I only ever ride with the helmet closed for the reasons you discussed. Wearing glasses is not a good reason for open face in my opinion.
There is no real argument not to use a full face helmet. Even on my CBT course years and years ago they advised not to buy or use an open-face helmet. The perfect compromise is of course the system, or combination helmet with the flip-front which allows you to have the best of both worlds, but again, it's down to you to use it sensibly
Spot on spicy, it is mad how people don't value things like their nose teeth and chin. Great vid and I'm sure you'll persuade a lot of newer riders against open face 🏍️👍
Dont agree with everything you say but you definitely raised some good points, good video, good message! I wear a full face because although it may not be pretty, I do quite like having a face. Rarely use my visor because I prefer it up, feels less like your heads in a fisbowl. I do keep the visor on however because on the off chance I am going >30/35 (commuter) I do pop it down because getting hit in the glasses by shit is scary AF right close to your eye. The glasses and full face is dumb argument not to wear one, my CBT instructor mentioned some guys get straight armed glasses with their helmets but I've never really had a problem with my normal frames
Most motorcycle accidents also involve broken bones and torn up flesh of other parts of the body. So does this also mean that if im not wearing a pressure suit and kevlar pants with pads, that im also an idiot? A friend of mine was run off the road by a car, while doing 80mph on the highway. He wasnt wearing a helmet. He flipped and skidded on pavement and then over a guard rail in to the grass and slammed his body into a tree stump at the bottom of a hill, and his harley then rolled on top of him in the end. Multiple broken ribs, punctured lung, bruised organs, including his heart, broken arm in multiple spots, and broke his femur which came through the skin. Not a single head injury. He was back riding in a couple months.
Personally, I use all the protective equipment I can. I have been in a serious accident in 2012 (none fault) took a year to recover over 2 years as I had to have 2 surgeries. To this day I still have a lot of damage. As clearly stated in this video this is to highlight the risks to the uninformed. If someone watches this and say ok but I am still going to use one. That's fine with me it is now their responsibility. This is just highlighting the risks to new people who may not question it. Your friend must have been very lucky to be walking 2 months after compound fracture to the femur. However if you are suggesting there is some conclusion or correlation to the real risks based one lucky persons experience you would be mistaken that's not how statistics work. In short yes riding without proper gear is a bit dumb but that's just my opinion and the only power it has is what you give it.
Appreciate this dude, i would fall under the hipster bracket who bought an open face helmet because it looked cool to ride on a cruising bike. I didn't really think that deeply when i purchased it, but i'm returning it and buying a full face because if im wearing a helmet purely for a safety point of view, i should think of it purely from a safety point of view.
Well said spicy. My opinion is exactly the same as yours, if people want to take the risk that's their choice to make but personally I wouldn't ride in a open Face helmet I've crashed and managed to break my nose in a full face (adventure helmet similar to the variant) so don't want to know what the outcome would have been without the front protection. Keep up the great content. Hopefully a few old sprockets maybe a a rear disk and a chain from my sv650 coming your way soon as well (once they get to the end of their serviceable life)
While I completely agree with what you say, apparently the guy who sold me my first motorbike doesn't. I got a brand new Sinnis Apache SM recently, thanks to your videos showing how good the older model was (thanks a lot btw, seems like a great first bike). When buying it though I wanted to buy a helmet, the guy recommended open face as 'it's best for the summer and doesn't have much of a downside other than being cold in the winter', I even checked the back of the one he was showing me and it had no stickers to indicate it was even road legal. From this point on I knew he was a dumbass and I ended up getting a full face.
As a teen I had an MTX, so I wore an MX helmet and goggles. Once I upgraded to a regular motorcycle, I thought that looked naf, but I had no money left, so my uncle gave me an open faced helmet, with a perspex faceshield, which had been in a crash. Different times.
All these people who wear an open face helmet should go and do back roads at 60mph+ especially during the summer, man sometimes I get hit by massive bugs and it feels like getting hit by a rock, I wear a full gear including riding boots, even when I go to the nearest shop, and to be honest proper full face lid looks much better especially with some nice graphics
I 100% agree spicy & I know it's not really comparable but people who have been in acid attacks end up with facial disfigurements and they would tell you how horrible it is because people do look, in an ideal world people wouldn't but it's not an ideal world. Also the trumphs with the brown leather jackets and satchel is so true lol. & Bugs in the face is not nice either, I ended up with a black eye from hitting a bee at 70 mph lol
A helmet is better than none at all. You can't really demean anyone for their choice in wearing one, whether it's open or full faced. Personally I like open face helmets better for commuting because you have less blind spots and can hear better. Full face for dirt/off road riding and racing.
Ok, i own multiple full face helmets yet i’ve just ordered an open face helmet. i completely understand the dangers of an open face, yet i just love the retro look. So Spicy- if you see me riding with an open face plz don’t judge lol
I wear glasses and i tried on several full face helmets when i got mine and i bought the one which my glasses could fit under the best. No excuses guys
I have (and use) both. I would never wear an open face without eye protection, that's just dumb. To be honest I also wouldn't use the open face out of town where speeds are higher. I don't wear the open face for vanity, or for the other reasons you cite. I mainly wear it on chilly mornings where my full face will fog up at low speed (despite pinlock and anti fog treatment). Until I replaced my Arai with a Shoei, I also found the open face useful when riding in variable light, as my bertonni goggles/glasses are photochromic (Arai's don't have internal drop-down sun visors . I agree open faces are inherently more dangerous in most circs. Frankly that's obvious. But I would pick being able to see clearly over virtually anything else. The Shoei has made a big difference though. Shame Arai puts a Snell rating over real world safety, because I do think on balance Arais are better helmets.
Hey Spicy, Back in Jan 2017 a car pulled out infront of me from a T-junction behind a big van blocking his view, I ended up flying straight over his car bonnet and fully face planted the floor, I was wearing a full face helmet but I still ended up suffering a broken nose and a fractured cheek bone, If I was wearing an open faced helmet my face would have been f*cked or even worse, I would never wear an open faced helmet on public roads as you might aswell not wear a helmet at all, been enjoying the videos recently keep up the good work!
@@spicy110 I'm sincerely going to take you up on that.. good advise/ orders should always be heeded, problem was the price range is so vast for helmets and they all look to me relatively just as well built, materials etc.. so went for the old path of least resistance.. cost.. . My noobness has clearly not failed me here and I shall humbly take the L.. Thanks for the comment regards..
I once saw a photo of a motorcyclist who just had his face ripped off. I didn't go looking for it. Someone posted it somewhere and I saw it. It was dire. What has been seen can't be unseen.
Its a common thing in asia especially where i'm from, singapore for riders to wear openface helmets. Its 31 to 35°c and 90% humid most of the time. Yet this is mainly concentrated on riders on 400cc and below rides. Riders on 600cc bikes and above mainly wear fullface helmets, but they're fine with it as they go fast so at least that keeps them comfortable to a certain degree. In terms of accident statistics, true those open face helmet riders are more prone to accidents but. I guess at the end of the day, you accept the risks involved and ride defensively. Its hard to explain it, till you come here and ride.
In opposition to what you said at 14:08 , the NHS, similar to the australian equivalent, means that avoidable injuries push our taxes and insurances up. I have no objection to the government saying either 'you must wear a helmet' or 'if you are not wearing a helmet, you are not covered by NHS'. I dont want to subsidise others idiocy.
Hi, Nerb, I can see your point, but my issue with that policy would be inexperienced younger riders who are, let's face it, new adults, don't always make the best decisions. And everyone, especially the young deserve a second chance and to learn from their mistakes. Now, an older, experienced biker who has "graduated" to a cruiser and decides they want to be nostalgic, knowing full well what the consequences are, then fair enough.
Your choice, just know most crashes happen within 2 miles of home and 30mph vs a car in full gear inc full face (I showed in this video) = 2 surgeries, over a year off work, and permanent damage for me.
I hear your point, soooo HALF HELM!... Kidding, sorry. It never ceases to amaze me when I teach an MSF class, speak for 10+ minutes about the safety of a full face and how a 3/4 (open face) and a half helm each offer progressively less protection.... and then people show up the next day with half helms! Ok, you made your choice, but I've given you enough information that you can now blame no one but yourself. I am not here to force you to be a safer rider, I am here to help you learn to recognize the risks of your choices/actions and how to avoid, mitigate, or accept them.
I could not possibly agree more with you on this one. The amount of times I had big bugs and little rocks hit my visor and chin-guard on my daily commute on the Autobahn is proof enough for me. In the end you can chip off parts of your teeth with a spoon while eating cereal in a rush. I do not want to know what a little rock does at as little as 130 kph. ...Now that I think about it it's kind of odd... in every third video of mine I can hear something hitting the helmet that I do not want to hit my face haha.
if you can crash at 30mph on a bigger bike such as a 1000cc bike and get badly injured, the same goes for 50cc and 125cc bikes. I hate when people say that there don't need protection when riding a 50cc, its just a stupid decision.
If one person changes their mind and buys a full face helmet instead of an open face after seeing this post youve done well ... if a few more you've probably saved a life
We do have one so far!
And if they do buy an open face helmet then you've probably saved even more lives by having someone that dumb off the roads soon.
I did !
I did: just changed my mind now. Thank you. I am gutted but it’s a silly irrational thought and therefore I shall be ignoring it and going full face. Cheers Spicy110!!
Definitely was gonna get a half helmet...but you've convinced me. Thank you
Thanks for doing this.
In the past the roads had a lot less traffic, I think it is a smart decision to make the switch now. 😁 enjoy the new wheels!
*Looks like you were doing just fine with an open face helmet.*
@@hulkhatepunybanner sure but then your only likly to suffer one server brain injury before your not riding a bike
Funny how this full-face helmet brigade comes stormimg out of their corner to support videos like this one and to apurt their visdom telling us the 3/4 helmet wearers we are all wrong, isn't it.

glad it was not my eye
It is a faff to put a helmet on with glasses... But how often do you do it? In reality maybe 6 times a day?
Wear knight full plate armor 😉
Spicy i know this video isnt on the subject of my comment but i want to thank you for the riding tips videos because it helped me pass my A1 license in 1st try.

You Sir changed my mind!
I was thinking about buying a new open face helmet.
Because of your words I took a fullface one.
Thanks for that!
Ride on!
I'm just getting into motorbikes and you've convinced me to choose function over style. Many thanks, ride safe :)
I will be ditching my 3/4 for a full face ASAP!!!
in my 30 year iv seen people have crashes on motorbikes and open face helmets are unsafe safe my dad use to say never use a open face helmets. the law for helmets have been out since 1976 so full face are the best never use a open face is what I say . great video keep up the good work
"yeah... But you won't be ABLE to feel the wind on your face, when you don't have one" I'm dead 😂.
Hey man, I don't suppose this was on the M1? My friend saw an accident happen with similar injuries

Your experience has changed my mind on getting an open face....thanks for sharing.....hope you make a full speedy recovery my friend 👍
Thanks for the film. Do you know what are the statistics for likelihood of accidents of those wearing full face and open face helmets?
From what I see most riders here in Florida don’t wear a helmet at all. Especially the Harley riders!
A few weeks ago I saw a person on a quadbike, no helmet, no t shirt ,shorts and flip flops, best riding gear.
There's a guy like that near me. No exhaust, no gear or helmet until recently where he's started wearing a cheap Motocross style helmet. Rides like a twat and ruins the local park by doing donuts all over the grass.
the local name for them is chavs
Dec moto no,these are a special type of chav. Giga-chavs
chavosarous rex
Unfortunately there's no law for quads regarding protective headware, simply because they've got four wheels. It's fucking ridiculous.
Great video, agree 100%. I have 2 Full face modular helmets, one red and black for cool weather, and one white for hot weather
as with the many comments below, Spicy, I have now completely changed my opinion of open faced helmets, and am now in the market for a full helmet ONLY for when I take my CBT in the summer! Phew!! Thanks!!! keep up the great work
I couldn't agree more Spicy.
I wear glasses and still use full face lids, it’s a little difficult to start with but you get used to it and find a way to get them comfortable
Liked the video. I think you nailed it exactly. Not using a full-face is stupid, and freedom by definition is freedom to do stupid things.
I have to say before watching this I was sat on the fence about open faced helmets. I own both open and full face lids. While I love open face helmets in the summer ( with a visor ) I won't be using it any more. The argument against them is simply too strong. Thank you
A wise move 👍
I doubt you have actually done any research into this subject. You have just listened to another persons opinion and gone "what he said" full face helmets are deadly if you hit the road wrong!
I always wear full face. In my three minor crashes I somehow managed to avoid touching anything with the helmet
3 crashes?
When you said you always wear a helmet, you really didn’t lie. You have it even on you profile pic 😂
You called me an idiot in your first comment. It isn't about agreeing with me I am representing actual data.
I wear glasses never had a problem with the two full front helmets good video well thought out and very educational
@@spicy110 lol yes it does sound silly now.
Props for admitting that many wouldn't 👍👍
They are not as easy to replace as visors are ..
alright ! i'm convinced ! thank you for your advices ! i'll look harder for a full face helmet that fits my glasses and feels confortable.
👏👊 well said Spicy couldn't agree more. But what is it about the look that people like, i saw the other day a rider ,open face helmet , short sleeved shirt and shorts oh and not forgetting the boat shoes and no socks ! Absolutely crazy.

125 SM use a cheese grater after a bath better result
I was on the verge of switching from full face to open face. thanks for this video.
I wear scrips or sunglasses in my helmets, always have.
wear full helmet folks !! The ugly it looks the safest is !
I wear a full face helmet since i like my face
Kieron Good on yer mate never believe Sales Rep's 😆. .Enjoy the Motorbiking..
'You're not going to be able to feel the wind in your face if you don't have one'. Never has a truer word been spoken.
I like your bluntness and honestly. Very good video! New subscriber!
Haha as I say this is only to highlight the issues with them for new riders who may not realise the added risk they pick with a open face. 🙂
Totally agree, and nice t shirt.
I have that helmet. AGV Stealth... I love it. Although I dont use it anymore, now that its 12 years old
Hey Spicy, Back in Jan 2017 a car pulled out infront of me from a T-junction behind a big van blocking his view, I ended up flying straight over his car bonnet and fully face planted the floor, I was wearing a full face helmet but I still ended up suffering a broken nose and a fractured cheek bone, If I was wearing an open faced helmet my face would have been f*cked or even worse, I would never wear an open faced helmet on public roads as you might aswell not wear a helmet at all, been enjoying the videos recently keep up the good work!
Extremely helpful 3min30,genuinely made me change my online 'Wish' order... and who knows probably my face...👍.
Thanks
Don't order off wish full stop the helmets are unsafe.

I'm sincerely going to take you up on that.. good advise/ orders should always be heeded, problem was the price range is so vast for helmets and they all look to me relatively just as well built, materials etc.. so went for the old path of least resistance.. cost.. .
My noobness has clearly not failed me here and I shall humbly take the L..
Thanks for the comment
regards..
@@seanandersonbey3768 just look on youtube for wish.com motorcycle helmet.
I once saw a photo of a motorcyclist who just had his face ripped off. I didn't go looking for it. Someone posted it somewhere and I saw it. It was dire. What has been seen can't be unseen.
🎵 Birds do it, bees do it, even flying pigeon's poo do it. Let's do it. Let's hit him in the eye
Hahahahhahaha
i think you saved my life, i was going to make a facial shield for a 3/4 helmet and i think you might have talked me out. thank you.
Glad to hear it, just takes a little logic.
Agreed. Its already taxed massively to try and recoup some of its costs. Maybe not enough.
I use a half helmet I know my face will get smashed but I'm only riding quite slow on a 125cc and a short ride to the local market/shops
Well spicy I wear glasses and I just had to look a little harder for one with easy fit! Not hard! I agree with you 100% in this video
